#i’ve been thinking about how much more comfortable breanna seems in 1b #and i keep coming back to this scene #because we see her interact with sophie plenty in 1a #even spend time together just the two of them in the van or at hq as they oversee the rest of the team in the field #but this scene just feels different #i think part of it is that sophie seems more comfortable #she’s been masterminding in 1a but this is really a step back into her comfort zone of directing #and that naturally helps breanna relax around her too #but i think it’s something deeper than that #because at the start of the series breanna must know of sophie from parker and hardison’s stories #knows that sophie is charismatic and clever and an excellent grifter #and most importantly she knows that sophie is hardison’s family #that he and parker and eliot all love this woman #breanna comes into the crew knowing that sophie is /important/ to them #that her opinion matters #that she is family #but breanna doesn’t know /her/ #so breanna joins the crew knowing she needs to be on her Best Behavior #knows that’s what you do in a new home - be good and quiet until you know if you’re safe to be yourself #and i think this is the moment breanna starts to feel comfortable with sophie #starts to trust that sophie is someone she can be herself around #because prior to this scene the only hint breanna gives in front of sophie that she’s gay is her speech in the card game job #poignant for those who get it and easy to brush off for those who don’t #and we don’t see the crew interact with any other textually gay characters #but the bucket job starts with a gay kid asking sophie to help him #to help reward a man who made him feel safe and loved when he was scared #and while breanna could be thanking sophie for giving her and the crew what they’re asking her for #i think it’s much deeper than that #because the way breanna looks at her #the weight she gives the moment before she says thank you #something she says she’s bad at just a few episodes previously but she feels strongly enough to do now #breanna is watching sophie and it’s a little in awe #and at first i thought it was about seeing sophie in her element #and i do think that’s part of it #but the way breanna swallows before she can work up to the thank you #the way her eyes are misty with emotion #the relieved and open smile at the end? #‘thank you for doing this for us’ means 'thank you for helping scared gay kids like maurice and me’ #'for helping us by rewarding our safe space’ #'for believing we /deserve/ a safe space’ #i think that she’s thanking sophie for seeing the value in what robert blanche did for him #for kids who felt alone the way she did #and i think this scene was so important because it was the moment sophie became safe to her #the moment she stopped fearing that she would cause a problem with her brother’s family #the moment she stopped worrying that she would have to choose between being part of the crew and being herself #and after this scene we see her start to be more open as a lesbian /specifically/ in front of sophie #sharing her conclusion about the identity of stella’s love #bonding with stella in front of sophie #telling sophie she found emily cute and even asking how to deal with that in the middle of a con #and each time sophie was quietly supportive #not making a big deal or prodding but nodding and smiling and offering gentle advice #breanna started to get to know sophie in 1a #but i think this is the moment she started to think of her as family #the moment she started to feel at home

So, short recap of this hell of a week

- starting with the US elections being the most dramatic ones ever

- Trump declares himself winner literal days before we get an official result

- The whole world's waiting for friggin Nevada to count their votes

- Trump wants to stop counting the votes, but at the same time not. He's confused, wants to involve the supreme court. Unclear why.

- with everyone's eyes still glued to Nevada, the CW airs a new episode of Supernatural, casually kicking the entirety of tumblr back into the year 2013

- Destiel becomes canon after 11 seasons / 12 years

- Castiel "dies" and somehow the internet turns it into a mainstream meme

- For about 12 hours everyone is convinced that Canon Destiel caused russian dictator Vladimir Putin to step down

- While all of us are busy freaking out about Destiel, Georgia turns blue, and we all find out via Destiel memes

- We're still waiting for Nevada

- Pennsylvania turns blue as well, and we find out via Destiel memes AGAIN

- while the whole world is STILL waiting for Nevada, Trump goes golfing, but not without declaring himself winner once more. Winner "BY A LOT".

- Trumps team send emails to people asking them for more money

- Biden wins Pennsylvania, now having enought electoral votes to win the presidency, fireworks all around the globe

- about 0.2 seconds after Pennsylvania has made Biden president, Nevada finishes counting.

- Joe Biden becomes the 46th President of the United States and a big bunch of people find out via destiel memes

- Trump lost the election. BY A LOT.

- we declare Biden the Destiel president

- Trump does not accept the election results. What a surprise.

- Trump is still golfing but his giant team of lawyers have dug up a bunch of people who claim to have witnessed cheating in the ballot counting

- Trumps lawyer team holds a press conference about their plans to fight against the cheating, leaving everyone confused about 1) their non-existent proof and 2) the very weird venue this conference was held at

- we learn that Trump's press conference was held in the parking lot of Four Seasons Landscaping, not the luxury hotel Four Seasons.

- we also learn that Four Seasons Landscaping is located in-between a crematorium and a sex-toy shop

- Biden makes a speech and Trump finally stops golfing. Trump's fans are very mad at the democracy for being a democracy. They also hate socialism without even knowing what it means.

The disparity between the “best of the best” elite Ba Sing Se guards and two 12-year-olds, one of whom has only been earthbending for a couple months and was taught by the other, is staggering. People always talk about how Firebending got perverted after the destruction of the dragons. Yet, the Earth Kingdom has fallen to the same.

Aang and Toph use everything at their disposal, combining the man-made structures with typical bending moves to pull off some pretty cool feats. Toph was taught by the Badgemoles, and therefore uses her skills in the earliest/most pristine form of the art.The guards, meanwhile, are very rigid in their bending. They only use intended/designated earth to bend, conscious of keeping in-tact the immaculate man-made structures that make up the heart of Ba Sing Se. Another example of the city’s folly.

Earth is a Great Equalizer. From the time we are born, we all must walk it, and rely on it to provide sustinence for survival. Yet the Elites at the center of the City of Walls and Secrets think themselves above such things. They’ve shaped the earth in intricate designs, intended to be a visual symbol of their superiority. They will not compromise the trophy-structures they built, even in the face of an invasion. And, when the absolutely must? They sacrifice the statues of the Badgermole, symbols of earthbending’s humble and natural beginning.

The end of book 2 was devoted to showing how flawed and perverted the Earth Kingdom had become as well, and this fight scene is a perfect visual representation of the values and reasoning behind the ultra-(artificial)control-oriented Ba Sing Se government and how it operates. Strict. Rigid. Controlled. Nobody thinks outside the box. Not even to defend what they hold dear.

What’s really cool about this is that cephalopod (octopus, squid, etc.) intelligence evolved completely separately from intelligence in tetrapods (which includes primates, dolphins, crows… basically any other intelligent animals you can think of). Cephalopods are very, very far away from us on the tree of life. For context, you and a starfish are more closely related than you and an octopus. The last common ancestor of humans and cephalopods was the so-called Urbilaterian, the hypothetical first animal with a left-right symmetric body. This animal almost certainly had, at most, an extremely simple nervous system, without anything resembling a brain.

All this is to say that the fact that this octopus appears to be dreaming means one of two things. Either

a) dreaming is a very, very old thing indeed, going directly back to the Urbilaterian. This would mean that almost every animal, from insects to starfish to sea slugs to newts, is likely to have the ability to dream in some capacity or another (unless they have specifically lost it by evolutionary simplification).

or

b) dreaming evolved entirely independently in cephalopods when they developed greater intelligence. This would suggest, at least, that there’s something very fundamental about dreaming related to intelligence itself, which causes it to emerge independently when sufficient intelligence arises.

Needless to say, either of these outcomes would be really very cool.
