The Battle of New York, 2012, and Tony flies himself and that nuke clear through the wormhole and into space.
And Tony knows he’s going to die.
But then he opens his eyes to sunlight, the sounds of the city, and an argument happening a few feet away, a tall brunette scolding a tiny scrappy looking blonde for getting in another fight and probably breaking his nose again.
There is something familiar about the blonde, and Tony is sure he is dreaming when he shakes hands first with pre-serum Steve Rogers, and then Steve’s best friend, Bucky Barnes.
Trapped in a time away from his own, Tony befriends them both, and as time goes on, finds himself falling in love with the smooth talking Bucky.
But America is at war, and first Bucky and then Steve ship out to join the cause. Tony has heard all the stories about the Howling Commandos and knows what’s going to happen, but despite his knowledge and how badly he wants to change things so he can keep Bucky, he can’t seem to do anything at all, and everything terrible happens anyway.
First Bucky falls, then Steve disappears, and Tony is left all alone in the 40′s, in an empty apartment he had shared with his best friend and his love, not knowing how he will ever get back to his own time, crying himself to sleep.
And he wakes up on the pavement in New York, the Hulk roaring in his face, Steve staring down at him in relief, the bodies of the Chitauri littering the streets.
Tony’s been gone years, and yet its only been a minute since he went through the portal.
Or when he fell through the sky, did he fall through time as well?
