Huh? Oh, right, sorry. I’m a social worker. He’s one of the kids I work with, not my actual kid. I mean, I consider them all my kids in a way, but yeah. Not actually mine.
See, that’s the thing, though. He’ll know if I let him win.

“I googled ‘backpacks in bulk,’ and it was the first link, after all the dumb advertisements.” He says, flashing the other a wicked grin. “Who knows, maybe they’re a new site, and just opened up as soon as I decided to inquire.” He offers, giving the unrealistic scenario a shrug. He glances at the piece of plastic, beginning to quickly enter in the information. It was satisfying knowing the other trusted him like this – and it was mutual, just so that’s clear. “Is this going to your work address or your home? I have the work address memorized but the other –…” In lieu of offering an explanation, he simply turns the computer to face the other, deciding it would be best for Bear to fill out the rest.
"Yeah, okay, smart aleck. Make fun of the old guy because he’s not so google-savvy.” Bear chuckled. “I swear, when I searched it, all I was getting were weird ads and stuff.” He was grateful for the other’s help and enjoyed joking around with his friend like this. This was one of the reasons that Barrett loved keeping in touch with his kids as they grew--they transitioned from adult and child to actual friends that could sit and talk and banter and joke, and that was probably his favorite thing. “Work’s fine. You type way faster than I do, anyway, and if they’re already at work I won’t have to worry about forgetting them.”

“No, you probably won’t and you don’t have to do anything, either. I’m perfectly happy to do this; I’m in awe of you doing so much for those kids, I wouldn’t be able to handle it.” She could barely attend to her own children in the correct fashion, never mind others that lived with someone else and those that were hard to protect. Her husband made her feel guilty every time she did something wrong when they were in the picture; he was the perfect man and she was far from it. The situation with her family was worrying; she was becoming her mother and she didn’t want that, the woman had shown her no compassion growing up and maybe that was why she was incapable of having that special bond with her children. “Yes, my eldest, Holliday. She’s from China and we’re very much trying to to carry on her heritage by making her learn the language; I think it’s important to know where you come from.” It didn;t stop Eleanor worrying about her in the future as opposed to Eve who looked like her parents. Picking up her bag, she pulled another smile and walked towards the door. “He’ll be here any second now. Pleased to meet you…Bear.” There were so many strange names, though people who she went to school with had strange posh names that she couldn’t even spell.
“I really, really appreciate this. Seriously. I’ll find some way to repay you, even if it’s something small. I... oh, thanks. It’s not that big of a deal, really. I just think it’s important for every kid to have someone they can rely on, you know? And if it can’t be a parent or a relative or a teacher then that’s where I come in. I’m just a support system, really, someone for them to talk to and who’s looking out for their best interests.” It was easy for him to say, because it was true. Growing up without any kind of support system had been terrifying, and if he could help kids not be in that kind of situation, he would. That was why he’d gone into social work in the first place. “Holliday. That’s a beautiful name, and I agree that it’s important for kids to know their culture. She sounds like a fantastic kid.” That was true, too, although Bear had never heard of a kid that he didn’t think was fantastic. He pocketed his malfunctioning phone and shouldered his bag, moving toward the door with Eleanor. “You too. I know it’s a strange name, but Barrett is sometimes hard for kids. Bear, now, that they can relate to. It makes things much easier.”

Bear: At least ten, but more would work, too.
Bear: Hm... that's a good question, actually. I didn't think about that. It probably wouldn't hurt.

Garland: I remember I found a thrift store that sold jansports for like two $ in Queens.
Garland: Some were kinda used up and stuff but pretty good for two dollars.
Bear: Really? Do you remember how many they had?
Bear: I don't want anything too beat up. I mean, the kids all have backpacks for the most part, but they're falling apart.
Bear: I want to get them something that'll last them a few years at least.
Reaching for the scissors as she finished wrapping the floral tape around the bouquet, Grace looked up as she heard the bell above the door ring. “Good morning,” she smiled softly, placing the scissors back on the counter. “Is there anything that I can help you with?”

He’d walked into the flower shop on a whim, the bright colors in the window catching his attention from the sidewalk. Bear figured it might be nice to have something colorful and alive on his kitchen table, and so he’d pushed through the door, the bell tinkling as the girl behind the counter looked up and smiled at him. He returned her smile with a grin of his own. “Um, yeah. I just... wanted to buy some flowers.”

One of my daughters is adopted, actually, so it’s nice to meet someone who looks after the one’s that didn’t get that opportunity. The older kids are usually forgotten about.” The woman felt slightly guilty, after adopting their first, it didn’t seen right to have one of their own but they did anyway. It was going to be hard for Holliday growing up, she didn’t look anything like the rest of her family members and that worried Eleanor. Maybe they should have adopted again instead of trying for one of their own once more. “Yes, I’m offering. I’m positive. Plus, I want to save you from having Zamir as your taxi driver, for some bizarre reason, that man is nearly always my taxi driver and it’s getting scary, so I’ll save you the trouble of fighting him about the efficiency of his heating and air con system.” Taking out her mobile, Eleanor motioned for him to wait a moment. “Hello, Andrew, hi. Sorry, it’s late, but my friend and I have an important place to be. I wouldn’t be asking you if it wasn’t important. I’ll pay you double your salary this month if you get here within the next half an hour. Oh, you’re out and about anyway? The offer still stands…okay. see you soon.” Hanging up, Eleanor had a big grin on her face. “He’s coming to pick us up. Sorry, I must introduce myself, I’m Eleanor.” She didn’t feel like her last name was necessary at this point.
I... thank you so much. Seriously, I’m never going to be able to repay you for all this, but I’ll definitely try, mark my words. He grinned at her, grateful for her kindness. Her initial hesitance to help him had made him wary of her intentions, but she seemed happy to help him and he wasn’t going to turn down the assistance. One of your daughters is adopted? That’s fantastic--a few of the kids I work with are adopted, too, and I think it’s great. I want to adopt someday, too, when things are stable enough for me to have a kid. He listened to Eleanor speak to her driver, offering to pay double his salary--how much money did this woman have? It sounded like he was coming right away, and he sighed in relief. Bear. Barrett, but everyone calls me Bear. Nice to meet you, Eleanor.

Shaking her head, Eleanor let him know that it was fine. As he told her about the little boy, the woman felt nauseous. It was awful what had happened to the boy and she couldn’t help but think about her own daughter; she was one of the lucky ones to come from a relatively wealthy family and an extremely rich one whereas this child had nothing. Although it wasn’t the same thing, she knew the feeling of not being wanted all too well; Eleanor wasn’t the one to be trusted in her family, her brother was the golden child and they would either forget about her or try to stunt her growth as a person. She had always wanted to have her own career without the family business, but even still, she was running on her family’s money and the woman sometimes felt like a fraud. Watching with worry, Eleanor sat on the sofa arm and waited for the man to finish. “I can have my driver take you? I’d happily take you.”
His eyes widened in surprise as he hung up the phone. What, seriously? You’d be willing to--I mean, I wouldn’t want to impose, you know? I already owe you big time for the phone call. Honestly, I’m not trying to be a bother. You don’t even know me. But... any other time I’d say no, flat-out no, because I wouldn’t want to take advantage, and if it was any kid but Craig I’d be fine with just taking a cab and getting there when I get there but... if you’re seriously offering...

“Shut up, you sap,” Lucky responds, grinning widely at the other. At this point, he was certain Bear knew he was absolute shit at accepting compliments. Whether Bear did it out of good nature or to tease Lucky was uncertain, so regardless, Lucky would at least try to pretend he didn’t care about his accomplishments. Low key, though, he was pretty proud of himself for making it so far without killing himself, or others. He was pretty clumsy. Turning his attention to the screen, he comes across one website, bagsinbulk.com, then looks back to Bear. “This site has Jansports for…” He clicks around, tongue poking out of the corner of his lips. “Eighty-eight bucks per case. Twenty four pieces in a case.”
“You found them that fast? Apparently I haven’t been googling enough. Seriously, you’re a godsend. Here--” he pulled out his wallet, sliding his credit card across the table. “Let’s order them. Twenty four should be plenty.” Bear took another swig of his coffee, laying off the compliments as best he could. It was tough for him because he liked to be encouraging, but Lucky was one of the kids who squirmed under that kind of attention and he hated making people uncomfortable, especially his own kids. Still, he thought it was important for them to know that someone was proud of them.
