Its easy to draw a comparison to 1984 in a superficial reading but that sort of ignores how Orwell doesnt understand political systems except in charicature
I swear some folks on this site would have argued against free public education because education is bourgeois, and to say educating youth is better than sticking them in factories is classist.

Seriously though "Caleb Williams" by Godwin is one of the most underrated novels ever. If you like Hugo's Les Miserables it's on the same level, and its basically the first crime thriller. It's endlessly complex and exciting. Please read it for the love of god.

Curiosity is a principle that carries its pleasures, as well as its pains, along with it. The mind is urged by a perpetual stimulus; it seems as if it were continually approaching to the end of its race; and as the insatiable desire of satisfaction is its principle of conduct, so it promises itself in that satisfaction an unknown gratification, which seems as if it were capable of fully compensating any injuries that may be suffered in the career.
William Godwin, Caleb Williams (1794)
Oh, God! Give me poverty! Shower upon me all the imaginary hardships of human life! I will receive them with all thankfulness. Turn me a prey to the wild beasts of the desert, so I be never again the victim of man, dressed in the gore-dripping robes of authority! Suffer me at least to call...
The human mind is a creature of celestial origin, shut up and confined in a wall of flesh. We feel a kind of proud impatience of the degradation to which we are condemned. We beat ourselves to pieces against the wires of our cage, and long to escape, to shoot through the elements, and be as free to change at any instant the place where we dwell, as to change the subject to which our thoughts are applied.
