🔹She/her, arospec ace
🔹I go by AJ, or Void, if that feels more natural to you
🔹Grad student, somehow
🔹Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
🔹Allegedly this is a Star Wars blog but idk how true that is anymore
🔹Also a fan of lots of other things, including but not limited to: Tolkien's Legendarium, The Queen's Thief, Howl's Moving Castle, Pride and Prejudice, Wooden Overcoats, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Over the Garden Wall, The Lunar Chronicles, folk music of various origins and persuasions, paintings with impressive use of light, good food, fancy drinks, and cats.
🔹Occasional artist (read: doodler), slightly more frequent writer
🔹I have one sideblog, @arafinweanappreciation, for Tolkien content
🔹I really REALLY like answering asks so don't be afraid to inbox me random questions if you ever want to
🔹I try to be diligent about organizational tagging for characters and fandoms both for ease of searching and blocking purposes
🔹On that note, I usually only tag spoilers for ongoing content (i.e. I’ve never tagged spoilers for rebels or tcw), and stop tagging spoilers 4-6 weeks after a finale drops. If you’re currently watching a Star Wars show that finished its most recent season more than a month ago, scroll at your own risk
🔹 #void doodles - my art tag, quality often questionable (also mostly inactive because I do almost all traditional art and I'm not very good at taking nice pictures of it lol.)
🔹#talking into the void - mostly me rambling about irl stuff. feel free to block it if you're here for fandom stuff tbh. doesn't hurt my feelings
🔹 #aj writes - my fanfic and related posting (Star Wars fic masterlist here)
Currently reading: The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien (reread), Existential Psychotherapy and Love's Executioner, both by Irvin D. Yalom

at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
grad school is incredible because I just got to turn in ~500 words on what Alfred Adler, founder of individual psychology, probably would have thought about why Anakin is The Way He Is. with scholarly citations
grad school is incredible because I might get to write a research proposal for a study about the sociology of renaissance fairs/festivals for my research methods class if I play my cards right
the thing about getting out of the torment nexus is that you do start thinking "man if you ignore the torment i used to have a lot of fun in the torment nexus"
people might think creating OC lore involves a lot of thinking & planning, but in my personal experience, OC development is more like a divine vision from a god slamming you over the head with a mallet while ur doing the fuckin dishes or folding laundry
Omg I simply must know what a cardboard dulcimer is!!! What a fantastic word!!!
these are cardboard dulcimers!
specifically, they're cardboard versions of an Appalachian folk instrument called the mountain dulcimer (aka Appalachian dulcimer), which is, of course, traditionally made of wood and not cardboard. they tend to look more like the bottom image, but iirc the heart-shaped sound holes in the top image are more traditional than the f-shaped ones! a lot of places sell cardboard versions because they're good beginner instruments and it makes them accessible for chlidrens' music classes and the like. apparently the cardboard still gets pretty good sound!
i've been considering getting one because I want to try playing folk music despite having very limited musical experience and a fairly tight budget, so this is a pretty accessible option for me as well lol
I love my aro, ace, and aroace friends and mutuals so much. You deserves so so so much love. I drew these little creatures for you and whoever sees this! Hope you like them🫶
"impulse buy" (noun) anything I have been low-key thinking about purchasing for 3 months, an item that subsequently spent 24-48 hours in my cart as I went through each and every state of grief, and which I then bought, in a desperate, the-guilt-can't-get-me-if-I'm-fast-enough rush.
