In the Gem AU when Taka and Mondo go to the sauna together for the first time the bathhouse people tried to refuse Mondo because of his "tattoos" but that would make Taka absolutely pissed because "they're NOT tattoos they're BIRTHMARKS. are you discriminating against him because of how he was BORN??" and he'd make such a stink that they'd let Mondo in just to shut him up. That context is definitely a factor that leads into their fusion, along with the whole skin-baring thing. Mondo's so smitten by it.
