a few Christmases ago, at a family party, my brother tried to make fun of me for 'crossdressing' as a child (something I had completely forgotten about. besides a few fragments), but he was telling this to my Conservative Uncle Who Is Actually Libertarian Because He Likes The Mexican's Work Ethics But Not That They Take All The Jobs- the look of estranged disgust was so palpable that he couldn't even make fun of me.

I really appreciate that growing up, I was taught to consider my parent’s friends as my aunts and uncles, and therefore their children as my cousins.

it made my upbringing even more multicultural (I have Arab cousins, Hispanic cousins), in a way that I think was still uniquely American.

It did begin to get awkward when my older brother started dating a girl I thought was our cousin.
