I'M STILL STUDYING BUT I JUST WANTED TO HOP ON HERE AND SAY I HAVEN'T ABANDONED THIS BLOG.
i will be here either this afternoon or evening.
It's a big city. I can't be everywhere. But they don't know where I am. We have a signal now. For when I'm needed. But when that light hits the sky, it's not just a call. It's a warning. To them. Fear… is a tool.
The Batman (2022) dir. Matt Reeves
@greatfailure: can you pass the salt?
the dining table in wayne manor is large and long, more formal than casual, extending out far more than needed for two people— evident by how far apart they sit. opposite ends of the table. both heads of their own table. it's a snide remark, one meant to burrow underneath bruce's skin. it's what jason does best nowadays, and often succeeds. he doesn't need to confirm the context, the younger one's tone of voice paints a clear enough picture, but he does anyway. there's a compulsion in him. perhaps for jason to see what bruce already knows lives beneath the surface of his skin, or for the confirmation of a simple fact: how much he hates him. when his cerulean irises glance up from the plate of dinner prepared by alfred, gaze meeting the other's— bruce's answer becomes broad as daylight. by how jason's eyes are narrowed, staring daggers from the opposite end of the table and room, it's quite substantial too. deeper than bruce will ever be able to comprehend and he can't even begin to decipher what's hidden beneath his eyes— the ultimate detective failing one more. "sure." the salt shaker to his right is slid across the table, landing in the middle of the table— close enough to grab, but not without the other standing up. "sorry." for the salt shaker or everything else? jason can figure that out.
@2005jesuschrist [rebekah]: i love a good party.
“i take it you’ve enjoyed yourself.” a smile graces bruce’s face, the apples of his cheeks blossoming as he situates himself beside the blonde. fingers holding a champagne flute, it’s brought to his lips before taking a small tap— nothing more than he can handle. the grandiose ballroom hosting the annual wayne enterprises charity gala is beginning to thin out, his irises watching from the balcony above; guests starting to retreat to their personal vehicles and hail taxis. once all they were gone, he would return to wayne manor and don the cowl, slinking into the shadows for the remainder of the evening. gotham never sleeps. (he rarely does anymore.) although, something tells bruce that rebekah has other plans, for both of them. call it an inkling. or the repetition of past annual charity galas over the last two years. “have you made any plans for the evening?”
@redruins [june]: i've been dead once already.
❛❛ think you're one-of-a-kind? seen the resurrection act before. ❜❜ rare sarcasm bleeds around his lips, replacing the usual stoicism living beneath the cowl. the bat wouldn't often respond in such a way— bruce wayne would. the dark knight keeps to vagueness rather than curt retorts by the tip of his tongue. however, he often doesn't stay up for more than forty-eight hours either. eyes already strained, way past the point of a stinging sensation, he doesn't even want to envision the words that await him once he returns to wayne manor. by the woman's arrival, though— that seems in the distant future. irises trained on her, he wills himself to ignore the pulsing ache beginning to form in the front of his head. he asks an easier question.
❛❛ why are you in gotham? ❜❜
PROMPTS FROM BATMAN * assorted dialogue from the 1989 film
i want you to do me a favor.
i know who you are.
can you pass the salt?
why is it every time i come for you, somebody always gets in the way.
who do you trust?
are we gonna try to love each other?
i thought i was a pisces!
i like you a lot.
you know what they say?
that wasn't easy to get over, and don't think that i didn't try.
he stole my balloons!
i'm sorry, this is my cab.
i've gotta go to work.
perhaps you could try telling them the truth.
i love that tie.
listen, i was here first!
pardon me, but that's not a denial.
nice outfit!
if you gotta go, go with a smile.
i'm only laughing on the outside.
shall we dance?
what? what are you talking about?
it's an important job.
my life is really... complex.
i mean, how childish can you get?
i don't know if it's art, but i like it!
i've been dead once already.
i'm gonna need a minute or two alone.
who the hell are you?
i've recently had a tragedy in my life.
i have no wish to fill my few remaining years grieving for the loss of old friends.
they say he drinks blood.
oh, you're a visionary.
they don't make them like they used to.
you idiot! you made me!
i don't seem to be on the guest list.
you wanna get nuts? come on. let's get nuts.
i always ask that of my prey.
you killed my parents.
they're not bad people.
i thought champagne would be in order.
what are you?
will you marry me?
you look fine.
maybe we can cut a deal.
they love you a lot.
i'm not going to kill you.
i say... you're full of shit.
i'm not a bit surprised.
come on, you gruesome son of a bitch!
i just like the sound of it.
what are you laughing at?
take your camera.
i'm glad you're dead.
what do you want?
oh thank god you're alive.
hey, let's beat it.
we'll just shake hands and that'll be it.
grab it. whatever you do, don't let go.
right now, shut up.
feel free to drop in.
i'm going to kill you!
i don't like it up here.
oh, i got a live one here!
as you can see, i'm a lot happier.
now that's good work!
you know why they're so odd?
will you buy me lunch?
i didn't ask.
i like them already.
i couldn't find my socks without them.
you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses on, would you?
if you could see inside, i'm really crying.
you must be joking.
nobody wants a war.
you can quote me on that.
i've got to get you to the church on time.
if anyone else calls you beast, i'll rip their lungs out.
where does he get those wonderful toys?
don't kill me! don't kill me!
how do you know?
is that what you heard?
well, i'm in trouble now.
i love a good party.
let's broaden our minds.
what a dick.
i'd say we break into the place, trash the office, and make off with the records and say it was industrial espionage.
i make art until someone dies.
this house and all this stuff really doesn't seem like you at all.
honey, you'll never believe what happened to me today.
wait 'til they get a load of me.
can we get somebody else to do this?
what if we say no?
you say such beautiful things.
the pen is truly mightier than the sword.
some people say the same thing about you.
i mean, let's face it. you're not exactly normal, are you?
do i look like i'm joking?
you must be insane.
i'm reading your stuff.
i'm no picasso, but do you like it?
so what brings you here?
life's been good to me.
stop the press! who is that?
shut up and listen!
don't flatter yourself.
haven't you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?
i want you to tell all your friends about me.
it's time to retire!
brought you a little snack.
some things about my bruce portrayal—
as far as the massive wealth class divide in gotham goes, i don't think it's something bruce is entirely aware of until he becomes batman and is actually looking at the poverty in the streets. being an 8-year-old child who'd just experienced massive loss by the deaths of his parents, he created this conceptualized version of evil in his head that really didn't... curate around the legitimacy of crime being a way of survival, rather than just... out of pure evil like he believed.
because of that, i think it's something really makes sure waynecorp places a focal point on. making sure they pay well above the living wage for employees, investing into creating long-term housing, and investing in getting clean drinking water into the city.
playboy bruce isn't something i'm entirely keen on, but for the sake of my portrayal, i allow it in the sense that recognizing bruce is very awkward. he's not smooth around the edges or entirely eloquent. he's absolutely tripping on those red carpets at galas, he has spilled champagne all over that brand-new tuxedo he bought— but i think that's also the interesting thing that causes people to further separate the idea of him being batman. there's no way bruce wayne could be batman, look at him!
i take a lot of inspiration from the reeves portrayal of batman, because i do think that movie did some lovely things in regards to characterization. i do think bruce has a mirror directly adjacent from his bed but it's covered up, simply because he doesn't want to see his reflection first thing in the morning!!!!
and this leaves my final point on being a father figure. bruce is definitely a fuck-up in that regard, but i also want to kind of say— after jason's death, bruce did not want another robin. there was so much guilt, grief, pain, trauma wrapped in that situation. the only reason there was ever another robin was because tim forced his hand, basically— which turns out to be for the best, obviously.
