@batmanlovesnirvana
I see Anicia and Enid everywhere 😪 ( the way this could also be enid and dunk ;/ )
take this with a grain of salt, but when you really think about it… ormund hightower was basically advocating for nuclear disarmament…. 👀
look, if i'd been a noble (or even a random peasant) in westeros, i'd probably be rooting for the downfall of the white-haired incestuous weirdos and their flying nukes too.
that's why i wish the show had explored more of what the books heavily imply: that there were overlapping interests between powerful noble houses (especially the hightowers), the faith + the maesters in diminishing the dragons and, eventually, targ dominance. there is no real balance of power when one family possesses living weapons of mass destruction. if the targaryens had remained united during rhaenyra's time, no coalition of great houses, knights, or smallfolk would've realistically stood a chance against them.
making the targaryens destroy themselves from within was always the most effective way to break their hold on power.
you guys, i’m so sorry for the lack of updates!! i promise i am writing, it’s just that wattpad has been refusing to work for me + the electricity keeps cutting out for hours at a time, so literally nothing is cooperating on my end :/ dw tho, i’m absolutely still continuing the fic! i just need consistent wifi, electricity that decides to stay on, and for wattpad to please get its act together so i can finally post the next chapter ;)
Hello ☺️ happy to know that update is almost finished, sooo looking forward to it, checking multiple times a day 🍀 really curious about the upcoming bath scene, there are million thinghs to ask, but at the same time, dont wanna spoil... meamwhile Ser Willem standing guard before the door and trying to ignore Annie is sooo tense. Is she gonna help him next chapter? or on the road?
all I can say is that ser Willem and Annie will have a serious discussion on the road to KL 👀
lol
the hightower inquisition
ormund just walking around undiagnosed
tessarion when ormund’s weird ass got too close to her baby boy daeron:
currently at the airport thinking about annie and 300+ passengers surviving a plane crash... only to wake up in a world called westeros instead of being rescued <3
there is a term for legal guardianship, not exactly like modern times ofc bc the “legal” system doesn’t really exist. but i guess enid would be anicia’s ward, just like ned stark was jon arryn’s ward.
baelor would probably be wary tho for wards to fraternize with legitimate children esp in kings landing (like the great bastards)
yh I know, but isn’t that supposed to be only for men ?
i'm currently rereading a game of thrones, and something i noticed is that george never really specifies whether girls can become wards.
from what i remember, every example we get involves boys. ned was fostered in the vale, robert too, and even daeron, alicent's son, was sent to oldtown under lord ormund hightower. it's always sons being fostered under male lords.
i genuinely can't remember a single example of a daughter being sent away as a ward, let alone being fostered under another woman. maybe i'm forgetting someone, but i don't think we ever actually see it.
it's kind of the same with godparents. for a religion that's so heavily inspired by catholicism, i always found it surprising that the faith of the seven doesn't seem to have an equivalent to godmothers or godfathers. so for now, i'm just sticking with the "aunt" explanation for enid, it works better within westerosi customs, and it'll also become important later in the story :)
Absolutely love your story and the writing style! I am hooked on Wide Awake.
Your characterization of Baelor and Maekar seems truly believable to me, specially considering the proposed time period and the scars the Blackfyre Rebellion must have left on their minds.
Baelor - fair, honorable, conflicted, but still a man with desires, having a very hard time not expressing them, having a hard time harmonizing his duties and the weight of them upon the people around him.
Maekar - tough, rough, prideful, but you can see that things do affect him. I recall one of their dialogues during the ride to the witch's hut that clearly showed he does care about the things he did, but he cannot allow himself to care THAT much because of his position otherwise he wouldn't be able to function as parting of a ruling family - which does not excuse his behavior, but explains it, and I love the layers you have given him.
Anicia is a delight of an OC. Her reactions are very believable, given her position in Westeros, and all the dangers surrounding her. And her relationship with the other survivors, Dunk and Egg is extremely cute.
I do have two questions.
A. It is not often that these types of stories go into how much the Earthlings would miss their own pop culture (singing songs, discussing books, series or plays, remembering things from home together, like expats do when we are abroad and then we fjnd people from our nation). Usually because the OC is alone and has no one to talk to without looking crazy. Apologies if I missed anything, but do you think this would figure in the story at some point as relevant? Like, a fictional story/song from Earth being useful to explain or help a Westerosi character through something?
B. This is a Baelor/Anicia fic, but you did give some hints about Daeron and Joanna, so I hope it is not a bad look to ask whether Maekar himself would have his own love storyline? Especially given THAT scene from Chapter 33? No need to give spoilers, just wondering if there's anything in the cards for him because of how he's being written? I imagine that whatever love story that goes his way (if it goes ahahah) would require lots of soul searching and development from him because, even if it's not Annie (she's Baelor's, stay away Maekar), for him to get that kind of ending would have to see him be less of what he is now. Which would be great, I love me some painful character development.
Thank you so much for this story!
P.S. With your writing talent and patience to develop dialogue and characters, have you ever considered writing a novel?
thank you sm for liking my characterization of Baelor & Maekar ;) i’m not gonna lie, Baelor is probably the character i worry about writing the most. as much as you guys enjoy the fluff between him and anicia, i’m always sitting there wondering, “would baelor actually say this?” or “is this too OOC ?” bc i really want to stay true to who he is while also letting him grow through their relationship
i guess that’s the magic of fanfiction. you take an existing character and explore the parts of them that canon never had the chance to. i just hope i’m doing him justice.
A) we're definitely going to get a lot more references to movies, songs, books, and pop culture from our world during the journey to king's landing but that's about all i can say for now. at the beginning of the story, anicia was trying so hard to stay invisible. but by this point, that's no longer really possible, and she's a lot more comfortable being herself. so you'll start seeing her casually mentioning things from her world. i mean... i can totally picture her telling egg the entire plot of harry potter just bc she's bored.
tiny spoiler: one of the scenes in my notes has anicia comparing maegor to henry viii, which i thought was really funny. i just love having her draw parallels between westerosi history and real-world history. i think it's one of the most interesting parts of writing someone who's literally from our world.
so yh, expect plenty of little references sprinkled throughout the journey. movies, songs, historical figures... anicia (as well as Enid and Jo) can't help themselves!
B) yes, maekar does have a planned love interest that i'm obviously not going to reveal yet. i can't help myself when it comes to planning these things. i do think it's really funny that many people ship maekar and anicia tho.. i genuinely wasn't expecting that oop but like you said, baelor and anicia are the main ship i'm writing, first and foremost.
I have one tiny questionnnn......if Annie had said that she has a husband who is still alive but you know maybe he is a traveling merchant or smthng or lives very far away because of buisness (basically anything to protect herself) - basically any reason and Baelor had feelings for her would he still try to pursue her or would be back off??
short answer : he would yearn even more lol
long answer : he never would’ve crossed that line or admitted everything he ended up admitting like having a crush on her and all of that. he would’ve kept those feelings buried out of respect. which is why, when anicia will eventually tells him the truth [that her husband isn’t actually dead but alive in another world] it hits even harder. she’s the one who’s trapped in westeros, while william is still back in england, living his life with his new wife and children. so when she finally reveals that she’s not even from this world… yh. it’s going to be angsty as hell. that’s only one of several revelations that’ll completely shake their relationship and make everything so much more complicated.
‘he was a boy, aye, but the boy is the father to the man, and bastards are monstrous by nature’ / ‘bastard blood, shed at war’ — f&b, queen alicent hightower
‘i'll forgive you your sentimental affections for the thing you call brother, but you need to realize as I did when I learned his mother had lain with a beast to beget him. niklaus is an abomination. you do not talk to abominations, you do not reason with them, or try to change them. you erase them!’ / ‘a bastard desperate for a daddy?’ — the originals, mikael
i just know for a fact that alicent hightower and mikael (mikaelson??) would’ve been besties. bastarphobes till the end!!
can i be honest for a second? i’m kind of dreading the day i have to start writing the spring sickness arc
not bc i hate the plot itself (i actually think it's a really important part of the story) but bc i have so many juicy things planned for what comes after it that i'm way more excited to write those instead…….
the spring sickness lasts around two years in canon, and i already know i'm not keeping it that long. i'll prob shorten it to about a year, or maybe even use some bigger time skips. i'm still figuring that part out.
obvi there are going to be heartbreaking moments because... well, it's the spring sickness. thousands die, king's landing basically turns into a cemetery and so many major characters are affected. but spoiler: i'm not killing daeron off from it.
i'm just wondering... would you guys hate me if i only did around 4/5 chapters for the whole arc and relied on larger time jumps? i know anicia being a healer gives me a lot to explore, but at the same time i don't want to drag the pacing when i have so much i'm dying to get to afterward :/
who knows tho. maybe once i actually sit down to write it, i'll end up loving it and come up with a bunch of new ideas. rn tho it's def the arc i'm looking forward to writing the least.
Will anicia ever tell Baelor about queen elizabeth the first??
sure!! she’s not a historian tho… I think shell be more a knowledgeable about queen Elizabeth the second since she’s the current monarch in England by the time Annie plane crashed … oh and Marie Antoinette too 👀
