Jason finds out he has a new talent
âWhat kind of person takes a child hostage?â Jason sneers down at the unconscious man in a ski mask. He wishes he hadnât fallen unconscious so easily, Jason would have been more than glad to hit him a few more times.Â
âSomeone desperate,â Tim replies. Heâs untying the mess of rope around the hostageâs hand. Heâs young, maybe three or four, and is making small noises as if heâs trying very hard not to cry.Â
âOr just an asshole.âÂ
âThat too.â Tim smirks. He finishes untying the boy and moves to crouch in front of him. âHey kid, letâs get you back to your mom. Iâm sure sheâs worried to death. Kid?â
The kid stares up at Tim with wide eyes, his lower lip wobbling. He sniffs and makes a high sound as tears begin to spill over and down his cheeks.Â
âOh no,â Tim says and looks more scared in the face of a crying child than Jason has ever seen him.Â
Jason sighs. âWatch this guy. Iâll get the kid.â
âOh cool. Good, Iâve got the- yeah.â Tim scrambles away from the boy and over toward the failed bank robber.Â
The boy has worked himself up into sobs by the time Jason reaches him. He crouches where Tim was with a little distance between them but opens his arms in offering. Heâs surprised at how quickly the kid runs into his arms but doesnât let it stop him from clutching the child to him and rubbing his back as he lets it all out.Â
He looks over the boyâs shoulder and almost laughs at the sympathetic look Tim is giving him. Instead he returns his focus to the boy and tries to comfort him as his cries begin to quieten. He doesnât even complain when the boy very obviously wipes his nose on the sleeve of Jasonâs jacket.Â
âWhatâs your name?â Jason asks when his cries finally die down.Â
âIzzy.â Izzy yawns after. Today must have taken a toll on him.Â
âWas she in the bank with you?â
âWanna help me find her?â
Later, once Izzy is back with his mom and Tim is safe from the threat of tears, Tim thanks him. âYouâre good with kids,â he says.Â
Jasonâs flattered and feels himself grow warm. âIâm okay with kids. Youâre terrible with them.â
Tim shrugs. âI know where my talents lie.â
