can i see your necklace for a second, your highness? ^__^
Anyone else losing sleep over how Hua Cheng treats Eming poorly? Eming was made from his own eye, so you'd think they'd be in sync - and they are, when it combat, because Eming was born in a desperate need for a weapon and to overcome enemies.
But Eming was also born from a low point in Hua Cheng's existence and must represent the person he was back when it was created - utterly devoted to Xie Lian, but also too weak to have been of any use to him. He saw himself as a loathsome lost puppy lapping at the heels of a god he couldn't hope to be worthy of serving, crying over everything.
It was also during his time desperately overcoming the trials to become a Supreme, aka what Hua Cheng also considers a shameful part of himself. The moment Xie Lian learns about the divine statues and murals, Hua Cheng jumps to suggest they be destroyed, and had tried as hard as he could to make sure they weren't discovered at all.
He changed himself into a suave, calm, collected, overpowered loyal servant to Xie Lian after 800 years, thinking that his prior exploits as a human and as a Wrath were too erratic and disrespectful and not at all how he wanted to be. He would indeed still do everything that Xie Lian wants of him, but now he's actually confident he could do it - so confident that he would even follow Xie Lian's heart when it doesn't seem like the right thing to do or even endangers him. No more hiding behind a mask as Wuming or lying about being his follower. He looks down upon who he used to be: all the same devotion, but not enough power, experience, or confidence to actually do anything RIGHT.
It's no wonder that Hua Cheng not only says no when Eming first wants a pet, but also repeatedly whacks Eming when the blade gets too needy. He thinks Eming's needy behavior (a reminder of his own personality back in the day) is as shameful as the past he worked desperately to leave behind. When he would have broken out into tears just trying to be noticed, when he was desperate for love and clung to Xie Lian when he first showed him kindness.
Eming is willing to show emotion and cry and become erratic even when Hua Cheng himself is keeping a surface-level calmness or focus. Is it any wonder why Hua Cheng doesn't want Xie Lian to see that he still feels emotions and weakness when he dedicated himself to being strong enough to protect Xie Lian, eliminate all his threats, get him whatever he wanted, so that he never had to suffer again?
Eming's sentience is limited, so the blade never evolves or changes or gets over its emotions by processing them over time. Hua Cheng himself was able to change into the person he wanted to be - or who he thought Xie Lian would need and like better - but Eming could never take the same steps. It remains as utterly devoted to Xie Lian and simple-minded as the moment it was born.
It just also happens to be a super deadly saber on the side nbd
I just love to draw Hua Cheng in different ways.
That one scene in Book 5 be like:
Once they get to know each other post-canon, Mei Nianqing and Hua Cheng are friends. They bond over being extra and loving to yearn for majestic Crown Princes who shine brighter than the sun. Mei Nianqing calls Hua Cheng the Calligraphy Demon, because his handwriting is by far the most terrifying thing about him. Hua Cheng calls Mei Nianqing Guoshi-in-Law because he treats him as Xie Lian's parent.
Hua Cheng also funds Mei Nianqing's lifestyle. Guoshi uses his tailor and interior decorator. Officially, Hua Cheng is fulfilling his filial obligations towards his husband's father-figure, and making sure his beloved husband is happy by keeping said father-figure well taken care of. Unofficially, Hua Cheng is doing it as an absolute flex on Jun Wu who was at one point the wealthiest being alive, but who now cannot even buy Mei Nianqing so much as a hair stick.
i love seeing discourse surroundning mei nianqing cause i have literally no idea how to feel about him. he's so girlfailiure coded. he runs away from his crazy ex but doen't even try to win custody of their shared pseudo son and just fucks off drawing pictures in some ruins about said ex. he looks down on mu qing for the crime of being poor.he tells little baby hong-er that he's a cursed monster and is going to die. he's all love is love being gay is okay with xie lian but severely judges his taste in men. he literally had the heavenly emperor torment him for centuries and yet his biggest headache in life was his 17 year old lousy disciple. he helps his disciples defeat his evil ex and then returns to him and spends the rest of his life chilling with him under a mountain. he's cool with all sorts of war crimes but draws the line at being poor and dating ghost kings. what even is this man on.
Some Mei Nianqing highlights in the midst of the chaotic and traumatic books 7 and 8:
Shaming all the heavenly officials into using their spiritual power to help the giant Xie Lian statue
Kicking the official insulting Xie Lian
Calling Quan Yizhen "fluffy child"
Playing cards while waiting to be rescued
Not caring if Xie Lian likes men, but tooooootally caring he likes a ghost king
Staying with Jun Wu after his defeat.
Saving Feng Xin and Mu Qing and STILL being sassy
Treasured memories of Baby Xie Lian with Mama and Papa (˃̣̣̥ᯅ˂̣̣̥)

the art is not arting today but i wanted to draw hong'er
Tgcf time travel fix-it au where xie lian gets sent to the past and the firstthing he does is to go see hua cheng in ghost city
As soon as he steps into the gambling hall, e'ming comes flying at him at mach speeds, scaring the shit out of everyone around him
Xie lian catches e'ming without breaking a sweat though, and just lights up with the biggest smile and starts cooing at it, "Hi baby! Hello baby! I missed you too! How's my good boy doing? You look especially shiny today, has Hua Cheng been good to you? What have I said about flying through crowds like that? Do you want to take someone's head off?"
The patrons of the gambling house give xie lian a wide berth as he heads up to where Hua Cheng is standing, giving him the biggest heart eyes ever and wondering when xie lian could possibly have gotten so familiar with his sword
Xie Lian tells him that he's from the future and also in his timeline they were in a relationship
Hua Cheng accepts this explanation without batting an eye because the way he sees it, even if xie lian was lying (which he doesn't think he is), it's still a win-win situation for hua cheng, who suddenly finds himself in a relationship with the guy he's been pining over for 800 years, and he didn't even have to win him over
that doesn't mean he's not going to do that anyway, his highness deserves it, what if the other hua cheng didn't do it well???
In honor of my "gege am i ugly" post getting over 10k notes, here's a "san lang am i ugly" version of it. Featuring: how I'm picturing Hua Cheng 90% of the time.
