honestly wish i was more in the headspace to talk about the things i’ve watched and like but it’s taken me days to come on here to basically say i loved the backrooms movie a lot; i especially enjoy how much it made me realize how the black lodge is kinda one of the original backrooms.

i kinda wish david lynch was still around to see this. on another note i love backrooms yellow, i think yellow itself is really seen as a happy color and almost one of nostalgia so in a way it’s deeply unsettling that this liminal place is trying to evoke familiarity and almost comfort but it all feels deeply wrong. if you watched the movie the scene where clark enters a room with a Christmas tree with those warm colorful bulbs it feels inviting makes you think back to childhood but everything else surrounding it feels off.

yes pope is like laura palmer, but andrew “pope” cody relating to the eraserhead baby. it’s all i could think about when we got flashbacks to when they were born, andrew was hardly ever held by smurf- if anything he was forced into her arms.

the eraserhead baby wasn’t really loved for it was a monster; but if anything it was still simply just a baby, a baby with the possibility of having colic if anything. eraserhead is clearly a film that kinda sprouted due to the fear of parenthood. but yeah andrew is like the eraserhead baby, and inherently so is laura? i think ive lost my plot or im cooking, i did assign the cody’s david lynch films and andrew’s was eraserhead!

rewatching ginger snaps and it truly is one of those criminally underrated movies,, i think it’s odd but understandable as to why it gets so heavily compared or grouped with jennifer’s body but they are extremely different films please !

like yes julia as more obvious similarities to laura but if you really watch both pieces of media in its entirety it’s impossible to ignore how much andrew and laura are narratively similar.

though laura is deemed universally loved she’s also kinda hated and feared, treated as something wrong and dirty as well. she’s not this perfect martyr in a way that people wish to paint her as- if anything people wish to escape her but can’t even as she lays to rot in her grave. she’s a product of her environment and still tried to be good person above that; she was suffering and no one did anything to intervene that. no one was going to save laura; billy in a way though completely flawed and clearly and a turbulent relationship with laura did in some ways try to help her but his connection with laura tainted him. the sex and drugs were laura’s way of coping with the repeated sexual abuse by the hands of her own father; which she states has been happening since she was 12.

it’s kinda heavily alluded to that andrew was a victim of csa; in fact it’s heavily implied in the show that it was by the hands of his own mother, smurf blurs intimacy lines with all her boys but it’s her dynamic with andrew that we see the brunt of it all. season four of animal kingdom andrew is basically chained to smurf and goes down a more destructive path to cope with the closeness. cage fighting, and taking unnecessary risks during jobs. honestly felt like i was getting war flashbacks when i realized that smurf wanted andrew to die with her; arguably the moment i realized how much andrew reminds me of laura. don’t get me started on andrew and laura’s relationship and approach to sex… i honestly think andrew cody is the only male character that can go bar for bar with laura on how tragic they are.

I know there are already a lot of fanfics where Andrew leaves Oceanside with Lena… but I genuinely can’t stop thinking about the idea of him leaving with J instead.

Their dynamic would honestly be so interesting (and probably chaotic) to explore. And of course, Dennis would somehow end up in the middle of it too.

So yeah… consider this an official fic idea. If anyone ever wants to write something with this concept, please let me know because I would absolutely read it.

thinking about how andrew ‘pope’ cody came out of prison early where no one visited him, no one put money in his commissary, he had no paid protection- just to find out they gave away his room and that they sold his house. like this man doesn’t matter unless he is of use to them, since no one really cared enough to know how he was holding up they didn’t even know he was leaving. fucking baz literally goes “why didn’t you tell how bad you had it” or something along those lines, but where was the protection prior?

ok folsom far as hell so they can get away with not visiting,,, but andrew was sending letters to cath- there were other means to speak to him and baz even states that if pope just told him how bad it was he would’ve tried to do something. yes the cody’s are only big fish cause the area they are in inherently seems like a small pond but smurf is a woman with connections.

also if folsom is so far how the fuck did he get back? like i need more details. no matter the distance they still could’ve done things for him.

people on twitter talk about the possibility of more people picking up animal kingdom which leads to the fear of people not having critical thinking skills when it comes to a show that has morally corrupt characters that are deeply complex.

like i personally don’t like baz but i feel like we can have a nuanced conversation on how he functions as a character and what going from one abuser to another kinda did for him as well as him just having a survivalist mindset. like every cody is flawed and you can sit stewing about them for hours. even smurf, especially when we get background on her through flashbacks. i wish more people would come to media with open minds and hearts with the willingness to question anything and everything

i can’t lie it will always annoy me when i see people actively hate andrew but care so deeply for julia because we see both of them get poorly treated in flashbacks- we see andrew still get mistreated into adulthood.

it also frustrates me when people talk about how they could’ve helped julia because we get to see how actively rebelling against smurf looks like in the show. we get it all in season two! very early. it hardly worked, walking out on smurf imprisoning smurf, and yes baz’s plan(s) had holes; very flawed but still even if they properly unionized we later see how the death of smurf greatly affects their business ties and loyalty i.e. gia. let’s say andrew did try and help julia. smurf would find out, she always does. don’t you think that would come with repercussions for everyone involved? she had control over their cards, so financially covering julia wouldn’t be easy on top of the fact that she was struggling with addiction so money itself would be trusted, getting her to rehab but then J? the situation is so hard to like try and fix. smurf made julia’s situation and her addiction, kicked her out. smurf also made it so all her boys are extremely dependent on her too.

J says that she still spoke highly of all her brothers and still clearly loved them, it wouldn’t be surprising if what he was saying was true and julia knew how complex the situation was. smurf treats both julia AND andrew the worst; and people gloss over it too quickly with the comentary about andrew’s childhood, the fact that he was basically left to the wolves in prison which WAS baz’s fault. i love these twins and hate when one gets thrown stones while the other is treated as a saint, these characters are all morally questionable damnit!

i actually got a video of this guy analyzing the last episode of animal kingdom and basically stating how the rest of the cody’s got what was coming to them and in ways i actually don’t hate J for how he executed things at the end because realistically he was a hurt child. but the thing isn’t the tike you’re in season six things are much more nuanced, it’s why J’s revenge plan feels like a betrayal to the viewer.

we learn specifically how andrew and julia grew up through flashbacks, they both weren’t treated well and that’s something people tend to not consider; at around six andrew basically was now going to be the family’s protector, told by smurf that he will need to help look after his new brother. you also have to consider how much control smurf had over her sons, which was purposeful; none of them could’ve truly helped julia. even once andrew stated working for jobs you don’t think she would see where his money would go? where he himself would go? we learn in season one she’s not above tracking J which means she probably tracks all her boys.

the guy who made this literally goes on to say he doesn’t find deran and craig to be sympathetic characters- which craig i get but deran? discussing the actors of grown men who have a pit against each other for their own mothers affection saying that they always treated J like shit when the whole point is that J isn’t doing much for the attention they had to work for all their lives. people who make these really half baked takes aren’t really considering how bad a mother smurf really was with main text and subtext, and how long abuse can warp a person with the way they interact with others. He also goes on to call pope a psychopath but says shawn hatosy’s portrayal of the character is so good you start humanizing pope, which yeah shawn’s great but pope isn’t a psychopath- he was literally made into what he is by his mother.

i took what he said personally because i love this show and love these characters,,, but maybe i am getting too heated about something as trivial as how people go about interpreting and understanding media

and after watching the last episode of the pitt tonight all i can really think about is how im gonna be passing dennis whitaker around like a blunt. i’m gonna keep forcibly feminizing him. he’s already becoming a nurturing omega in my cranium. that’s all this season did for me.

i think a lot about the mirroring that J and pope kinda just have throughout the series and how i would probably have to go through another watch through to even catch most of them.

one thing that does get me is J telling pope about having to dodge dcfs but pope actually went through the system as a child- we never get to see that touched on further or even in flashbacks but he mentions how he was scared and confused when he was put into foster care when trying to to find out more about lena.

thinking about how baz is the reason for the nickname pope. baz slept with julia was hardly affected by her getting kicked out. baz only really romantically going for cath out of the possibility he couldn’t have lucy. baz who is a shit father and shittier brother.

like it’s not shocking that craig and deran immediately assume baz is going to be like smurf because smurf seemed to put baz above all of them. andrew literally snaps at her because she cares more about baz then her own biological son, in flashbacks we see that smurfs love for baz was not one of a son but of romantic interest; seeing her own daughter as competition for his attention. smurf finds out julia and baz are kinda romantically involved- she gets baz a house. andrew says “baz is baz, he’s going to always look after himself” and honestly he consistently proves that; in his teen years and in present timeline. his caring moments with pope always give me a flicker of “maybe he does care” but the thing is baz’s treatment towards andrew has always been relatively the same as smurf’s.

honestly the more i come back and ponder i wouldn’t be surprised with baz is nice to andrew use to particle guilt of how things went down with julia and how he ended up with cath. baz wasn’t so nice to him in the flashbacks really, but him holding and rocking andrew saying he’ll take care of him after learning about the death of cath; he knew andrew loved cath more than him and killing her ate at him so much.

i do actually love the little crumbs of dennis we get so far about him. nebraskan farm boy with older brothers who basically tortured him growing up, did his undergrad in theology, and was very much homeless. we see him clearly missing the farm life in a way romanticizing it now that it’s separate from his family possibly. he seemingly has a hard time befriending male colleagues unlike his female ones, which is hard to ignore when you think of his brothers; he also doesn’t really like sports it’s a running trend so far, with season one not really comprehending to its fullest a football analogy, and when asked about baseball heroes state going to a few storm chasers games but clearly it was something he didn’t care for staying clueless about the sport itself. it’s crumbs but it gives you an idea of who he is when you think about tone and many other things at play.

there are a few people who do t want to say dennis has a complex relationship with religious but when he quotes scripture is textbook but within that it also feels uncertain. we could assume it’s due to him being a bit awkward, but it’s not surprising if he does have wavering faith. he’s the first one in his family to go to college and then the first to go to med school, that is something he said; he tells amy in season one his family is third generation farmers too. so it’s not surprising he’s not in contact with them, that he was unhoused for an undisclosed amount of time- i find it hard to believe dennis’ parents are actually supportive. i’m pretty sure dennis himself mentions that it’s basically a miracle if his parents remember his name, which in itself could possibly be an insight to how large his family might also be. dennis whitaker i see you and i don’t think you’re nothingburger like how some people treat you.

i do like just adding so many little headcanons onto him, he is kinda moldable in a way. but most pitt characters are pretty moldable with still being early in its run and also with the fact that it’s rare to entirely get information about these characters outside of their work.

i keep thinking about how we really needed more about cath especially in relation to pope and baz. it’s clear that there was a time where cath didn’t look at pope with such fear and i want to know when that switch happened. it’s clear that when lena was born pope was around; he also knows that she did read every single letter he ever sent her while in prison and her retort confirms she did. i want to know how cath and baz were like when they were younger, the baz that cath fell in love with when they were young. things like this keep a man up at night
