The most horrific thing in Battle Royale to me is that everyone in the Program aren't strangers, but classmates who have known each other for years before the Program started. They've formed friendships with each other, have their own roles among the class, and we see it all fall apart as soon as they get to the island. They get completely turned against each other, and each of them have the realization that they didn't actually know any of these people. They might have been classmates, maybe even friends, but that doesn't stop them from trying to kill each other

Battle Royale is a Japanese manga series written by Koushun Takami and illustrated by Masayuki Taguchi. It is based on Koushun Takami's novel of the same name, telling the story of a class of junior high school children who are forced to fight each other to the death.

I was going to make a half-serious half-joking post about how Tumblr would love Koushon Takami's novel Battle Royale, because it's a story about teens being put into a murder game where the interesting female characters are killed off to make room for a final confrontation between two kinda boring dudes.
But then I thought about how the novel includes a nuanced depiction of the ways childhood sexual abuse can make a person feel all twisted up inside. Koushon Takami's writing of Mitsuko Souma is literally the only fictional story I've ever experienced that accurately captures the pain and trauma of being sexually abused as a child. Reading Battle Royale as a teenager helped me deal with my own experience of being sexually abused as a kid. I genuinely think that Battle Royale should be required reading as part of high school curriculums.
The average Tumblr user's understanding of childhood sexual abuse is about on par with conservative parents groups that tour the country getting books banned for teaching children about sexual abuse or the members of the Imperial Diet who tried to ban the release of the film adaptation for inspiring teen criminality. The idea of reading a Tumblr essay about how "Mitsuko Souma is bad actually" makes me want to bury a sickle in someone's skull.
