do you guys remember that time in the jedi quest novels where anakin, as a young teenager, got abducted by xanatos' son and got drugged with an experimental drug that makes you - and check this one out, fellas - specifically more docile. it changed anakin's behavior to an extent that, although he was a hostage and in serious danger, he didn't want to leave said hostage situation and wanted to remain a captive. i'm sure that went over really fine with the former enslavement trauma guy, and there were no murders committed about this.

like, sure, they're novels for children written to make children relate to the main characters, but jedi quest has an entire novel where anakin gets captured by a slave trafficker he remembers from childhood. he recognizes this individual (known as krayn) by a momento around krayn's belt (and some of these momentos are literal body parts) that anakin recognizes as belonging to one of his childhood friends who krayn probably killed. then anakin is enslaved for a second time and sent to work The Mines TM, and the jedi council genuinely and actually argues to leave him (note: this is a child in danger) there because another jedi operative (note: this is an adult who agreed to take on this mission) might be compromised if they do anything too hasty such as, i don't know, retrieving the fucking child? i'm sure that went over very well with Baby Darth Vader and no murders were committed about this.

there was also a time where anakin offers to race in a podrace, using the win to free someone's enslaved sister. obi-wan and anakin are on the planet for an entirely different mission that this side quest is distracting them from, so obi-wan tells anakin not to, because in his view deviating from the council's orders is morally wrong. in this little exercise obi-wan forgets that the entire reason anakin is not still enslaved is because qui-gon deviated from their mission, and possibly unintentionally telling anakin Never Question Orders & It's Morally Wrong That You're Free is maybe why anakin goes on to never question orders and then sell his mortal soul or whatever. like just spitballing here. but no i'm sure that went over totally fine with Baby Darth Vader and no murders were committed about this.

It’s soooooo sick how Palpatine spent years separating Anakin from everyone he loved and everyone who loved him. He very deliberately isolated Anakin from everyone and made it so that Palpatine was his only confidant.

Palpatine is the one baby Ani runs to when he needs his mother’s comfort. He becomes that loving and validating figure for Anakin. Palpatine makes it so Anakin doesn’t trust Obi-Wan and is the one to pick him up and “put him back together” (in a way) after Mustafar. Anakin turns to Palpatine and keeps secrets from his guardian. Palpatine has the same homeword as Padme and the same career. Palpatine and Padme are at odds with each other during the war, but they share an origin and Palpatine later exploits this by giving Vader crumbs of Padme (like her old ship) as a reward.

To Anakin, Palpatine is his master, his father, his Master, his mother, and his wife. He is the only relationship that has lasted. He is the last connection to Padme. For Anakin, Palpatine was everything so to Vader Palpatine is everything.

Anakin has Obi-Wan and Palpatine so linked in his mind. They are both his father. They both hurt him (but Palpatine didn’t leave).

The rhythm of seeing one person at a time, but then Palpatine cutting in between visions of Padme is so haunting.

It’ GROSS. Palpatine and Anakin’s dynamic is so fascinating and upsetting and disturbing and layered and complicated and just so deeply deeply abusive.

While i do like the complexity of obi-wan and Anakins relationship, Palpatine definitely takes the cake its so icky i get chills when i think about their relationship especially later as Vader and the Emperor, wish fans gave it as much attention as the other

I feel like in the film there wasn’t a lot of focus on how much it would bother Anakin to have to save the son of his slaver. Like, hate it, really. But the book did better I think. From Chapter 9 of The Clone Wars novelization (2008).

you know, probably the most incomprehensible thing for me regarding fanon's obi-wan is not even his eternal woobification, but the fact that he is always made so extraordinary in everything, as if the very fact that he is not the main character offends people

obi-wan has suffered more than anyone in the world, obi-wan is the kindest and most heroic person in the galaxy, obi-wan is a space jesus, obi-wan is the most important person in anakin's life, and in everyone's lives, and the force itself loves him more than anyone, really — for me, all of this makes little sense because in his setting obi-wan is really such an average guy

i don't see the point in giving him a tragic backstory or heroic deeds in the supplementary materials, because his story is simply not about that. in the main story (g-lucas' movies), he is one of a thousand jedi raised in the same environment, with the same customs and values, in the safety and privilege of the temple on coruscant; he doesn't have any unique personal code or worldview. obi-wan is called the ideal jedi, but the truth is that being an ideal jedi means being a perfect cog in the system and following the code without question — and watching the movies, i can easily imagine that there are probably hundreds more such obi-wans behind the scenes; and this is not me being mean to obi-wan btw, it's just that he's the token jedi, he shares his flaws and shortcomings with the rest of the order

i also can’t say that obi-wan suffered in any special way or suffered more than anyone else: he shares his trauma of losing the jedi order equally with yoda and with the hundreds of the jedi who survived order66. his trauma of losing a master or losing an apprentice to the dark side is also nothing unique within the franchise: the vast majority of characters lost a parental figure in sw, yoda's apprentice turned to the dark side. and i don't think raising anakin was traumatic for obi-wan; no matter how much people insist that he was left with the most troublesome, problem child, that's far from the truth, and the experience was more traumatic for anakin, really

obi-wan is also not the hero of the story; he is the archetypal failed or wise mentor, depending on the trilogy. in the prequels, obi-wan is just an ordinary jedi, even though his abilities are far above average, but his lifestyle, beliefs and worldview are, again, quite ordinary. after the loss of the order, he took on a new mission and spent 20 years training in the force and observing luke skywalker; but he did not try to rebuild the order himself, did not help the rebellion or the surviving jedi in any way, and did not try to personally kill vader or sidious. his role in the story is to train and fail anakin, to train and lie to luke, because these two are the main characters of the saga, not obi-wan; and there is nothing offensive to obi-wan himself in this, each character has their own role in the story and that's okay

and this actually makes sense when you remember that obi-wan is the han solo of the prequel trio, as anakin is parallel to luke, and padme is parallel to leia… which is why i believe if you start your analysis of obi-wan with "he's the most/only [thing] in the galaxy," you're already super wrong about obi-wan as a character, alas

I think in-universe the reason Ahsoka couldn’t bring Anakin back from the dark side (or Obi-Wan, or anyone else for that matter) was because Darth Vader so compartmentalized away the “Anakin Skywalker” part of himself that it just triggered him for people to think of him as his past self, which people who knew Anakin obviously did.

Luke never could have known him as anything but Darth Vader and I think that was crucial in him turning back to the light. “I have accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker who was my father” did NOT work. “Father, please, help me” did. Because Luke believes that Darth Vader might save him without ever having known Anakin Skywalker and the “good” inside him that Luke senses becomes not a shadow of his past self that his old friends can’t let go of, but something that’s in him still, that’s a part of him no matter what, and that’s what twists his heart because Luke Skywalker is Anakin’s son but he is also Darth Vader’s son and he isn’t afraid of that (anymore) and that’s what gets Mr. I’d Burn Down The World To Save The Lives of my Family to do his thing.

And that’s how he gets back in touch with the part of himself that is Anakin Skywalker again.

I love the self-fulfilling prophecy of the Jedi refusing to bend the rules of their order for Anakin and in refusing to bend to help him he is susceptible to corruption from those who claim to be able to help him!!!!!!!!!! In fearing he will be their doom he becomes their doom!!!!!!!

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” The Jedi Council’s fear of Anakin leads to anger that he does not conform and behave like a normal Jedi. Their fear leads to anger from Anakin that he’s clearly seen as a danger. So Anakin comes to hate the Council. Which leads him into the arms of the Sith and suffering.

And I love how Anakin's family members(outside of Obi-Wan and Palpatine - their case is more complicated) don't really give a shit about him being special - they just want him to help people and make the galaxy a better place as Anakin Skywalker. Shmi "always said that the biggest problem is that people don't help each other" and has a probable habit of giving strangers hospitality(if Anakin can bring randoms to his home without hesitating or prior notice,it means his mom at the very least allows it),Padme wanted Anakin to fight in the war and to not jeopardize his position on the Order because "all hands on deck",Luke wanted his dad not to be a genocidal Sith Lord anymore. None of them gave much of a fuck about him being the Chosen One,a particularly powerful Jedi,an unique prodigy. He was just a human,to them.

And guess who brought the best of Anakin Skywalker?
