I know everyone and their mothers (including me) like to characterize Shepard with having medical trauma but one aspect people never seem to consider is having trauma with the prothean beacons vision.

Imagine having an entire civilizations history seared into your brain forever, never being able to fully comprehend its contents and never being able to forget it. Every time you close your eyes or think about it for even a second, vivid memories of a time before you flash through your mind with all the pain and suffering it entails. Shepard will grow old and the only memories they will vividly recall is the vision, a warning that will play out until they are dead.

There are many fun reasons to have a character avoid using guns, but I think "this otherwise-awesome fighter is a really terrible shot" is an underappreciated one. Yes, they're available in my setting and would work against my enemies. No, I don't have a moral code against them or a power that makes them redundant. I just can't aim for shit!

In general IMO the more badass and hypercompetent a character is, the more they're enriched by having one skill they're just absolutely hopeless at. Terrible shot, terrible liar, terrible dancer, no poker face, no sense of direction, can't drive, can't swim, can't cook, can't read, always broke, always late, always falls for a certain trick...

Soooo....finished Mass Effect Andromeda two days ago.

And, yeah, it could have been a bit deeper or better it needed more content so it suffered from the same problems what many open world (although it's not really "open") games suffer from - it's a fine game with some really intriguing aspects like SAM and the remnant technology by the Jardaan. And although I think that for example some characters could have needed more interactions with them, this scene is imo actually good. Also proving that you don't need scenes in which the love interests fool around. These kind of scenes are okay but not necessary for me to ship my character with one of the potential love interests.

Anyways... a solid game, not great, reminds me in some aspects of the first ME (but feels less dark and more hopeful which I really appreciate), especially potential consequences for decisions that are not resolved here but, and that's the actual problem, probably in a sequel that never happened. And that's the real issue. (Not to think about potential content that was withhold from the finished game for whatever reasons. DLCs? Not enough time?)

I also have similar feelings towards Andromeda. I like this game! I like that it has an optimistic tone, I think it the character stories are interesting and the characters are engaging and I think the darker aspects of Andromeda is so interesting to see.

As much as I like the game, even with the many issues I have with it, the thing that distances me from it IS the fact that the games story is not finished; and I have doubts we’ll actually see a direct sequel addressing the story threads the game left.

To me, what’s worse then “bad” story is an unfinished one; and that turns me away from replaying this game even though I like its combat loop and its planet design, just to name a couple aspects.

And yeah, fanfiction and writing is free etc etc, but that’s not going to dampen any desire I have to PLAY a direct sequel of Andromeda. I want to know what direction the writers intended to go! what combat system they could’ve used, would it be the same? Would it be slightly different? We can’t know.

It’s a bit funny that I prefer the “open world” of this game as opposed to DA:Inquisition, because they both use the same engine for each title, Frostbite, which I loathe as a game engine. But that may just come down to many different design choices instead of the engine itself.
