“It really was the cutest thing. I am pretty biased though and think everything she does is the cutest.” Harmony replied more than willing to admit that she was completely smitten with her daughter. “She’s going to have quite the little social life soon enough.” 

“Everything she does is the cutest, she’s the best” he smiled brightly. “I’m glad she’s doing well and making friends, that’s awesome for her” he nodded. “I think when I was her age I pretty much only knew my brother, I didn’t get to meet many of the other kids my age”

 Verity titled her head to the side as Brendon spoke. It was pretty clear to her that he was smitten by the man, wether or not he wanted to admit it. They had known each other for a long time, and she had never seen or heard him speak about someone like this before. “No, I want to give him a chance.” she said, knowing she had been stubborn about it before, but she had decided it was time. “Good, because if you are not happy, I am not happy, and if I am not happy, nobody is happy.” She added with a teasing wink. 

Brendon smiled brighter when she said she wanted to give Carter a chance. It meant a lot to him that she was trying, and he really did think that the two of them would get along if they’d actually taken the time to get to know each other. “Good, that’s good. You’ll like him, I promise” he said nodding a little as he looked back at her. “Just don’t like him too much” he said with a small laugh, not normally the type to get jealous but he knew it would sting a lot if they talked and then her and Carter would get along better than him and Carter. He laughed softly, “Oh trust me, I know that if you’re not happy no one’s happy. I’ve experienced it first hand”

 Carter side eyes him while shaking his head, “Nope, not going to happen.” He said, stubborn as ever, even though if anyone was going to convince him, it’d be Brendon. “That is true. I was planning on brining my own, but I decided against it last minute. Fresh right out of the machine is much better than what I make at home.” He laughed, making his way over to the stand before getting them a large bucket to share, “Want a drink?”

“You say that now but you just wait and see, I’m going to get you” he said, pointing back at him, “What type of dance do you hate the most? Cause I’ll make you do that” she said before watching him go and get the popcorn for them. “Yeah, you usually burn yours too so this is better” he teased him with a smile, knowing Carter didn’t actually usually burn it. He nodded a little, “Yeah, yeah, just a water is fine- thank you” he said quietly.

Harmony was more than happy to talk about Eliana instead of the clear hickey on Brendon’s neck. Ellie was something that she could completely handle because she was still young and cute and Harmony didn’t have to worry about what kind of trouble her daughter was getting into. “She’s doing great.  I took her own a playdate with a little girl a couple of months older than her and they got along great. Or about as well as two toddlers can I suppose. Connor says socialization is very important at this age.”

“That sounds really cute” he smiled. He loved kids, and he’d always thought about having some of his own one day so having Eliana in his life now made him very happy. “She’s so young and she’s already going to have more friends than I do” he joked with a small laugh.

“Don’t say i never did anything for you though.” She chuckled back at him before biting her lips together while nodding her head slowly, “I mean, sure. That sounds like it could be.. Fun.” She said, wanting to try at least to look at this from a positive point of view, you know; for Brendon’s sake. “I know, but try not to stress about it, okay!” She said, placing her hand reassuringly on his shoulder, “I love you and I just want you to be happy.”

“I would never say that” he said before smiling over at her. “I know it’s probably not what you really want to be doing but I think you’re going to like him. He’s really not what you think he is, I swear, he’s a really great guy” he said, wanting her to believe him even though he didn’t think she would. He knew she was only doing this for him, which he appreciated nonetheless. He nodded back at her, “I am happy, I promise”

 “Yeeah, that is never going to happen.” Carter told him while shaking his head. He hated dancing and was pretty set on the fact that he would never do it, not even if someone paid him too. Carter kind of wished he had kept his mouth shut, but then again what was said was said, besides it wasn’t like he was lying. “Aight..” He said while nodding his head slightly. He looked back over at him with a slight smile, “That is fair enough. As long as I have my popcorn, I won’t make a scene.” He told him with a shrug. “Speaking off, should we go and grab some before the movie starts?”

“You say that but I don’t know, I think I can convince you. Who knows, maybe you’ll be better than me at it” he said with a small smile. He wasn’t completely convinced that he would be able to get Carter to dance with him, but he wanted to see him try at least once. He looked over at him and smiled a little when he suggested they get popcorn, “Yeah, of course. It wouldn’t be a real movie night without our popcorn”

“I’m sorry Brendon, forget I said anything. It’s not any of my business anyway.” Harmony replied, sending him a weak smile. She had clearly made him feel uncomfortable and she felt bad about it. Harmony mentally kicked herself for even bringing it up.

Brendon just took another sip of his water in the awkward silence after she apologized. “It’s- ya know, it’s fine- it’s not-..” he paused, not really knowing what to say on the matter. He was never good with words when he got anxious, and part of him was always worried that if he said or did the wrong thing that Harmony would disown him. He knew she wouldn’t, but that fear was so deeply rooted that it was a feeling he just couldn’t shake. He couldn’t imagine how bad a reaction he would’ve gotten if his real parents had seen his neck right now. “So how’s um- how’s Ellie been?” he asked in an awkward attempt to change the subject.

 Verity just rolled her eyes a bit half jokingly, “Whaaat?” She responded a bit innocently, before chuckling back at him, “I told you I am not pushing it. I am sure you will tell me in time.” She added with a wink. She nodded, “Sure, I figured seeing he seem to mean a great deal to you that it is the last thing I can do.” She said, wanting him to make sure she was willing to make an effort with him. “It will be fine, Brendon. I promise, I am going to be on my best behavior.”

Brendon looked back over at her before letting out a small laugh, “I appreciate that, thank you” he said sweetly. “I know he’d be down to meet- well not meet... actually talk to you and get to know you and stuff” he corrected himself. He’d talked to Carter a little bit about it before, since he obviously wanted the pair to get along since it seemed they’d both be in his life for a very long time (hopefully). “I know you are, I’m just going to be nervous about it until it actually happens- you know me” he said, knowing she was well aware of how anxious he could get when something was important to him.

 “I mean I would hope so as you do seem to be spending an awful lot of time there.” He told him with a shrug. “Fair enough. I am sure I’ll be impressed regardless. It is not like I can do it myself.” He added with a laugh. He was pretty sure it would be good either way. “I mean, I guess that is fair, honestly. I have only met her like.. Once, ages ago. We didn’t exactly talk much..” He added with a shrug. “Good, than I’ll be there.” He said as he pulled into the parking lot of the cinema. 

Brendon smiled over at him, “I still need to get you to dance with me one day” he said with a small nod, “Who knows, maybe you’ll actually be pretty okay at it” he said, nudging his shoulder a little. He looked away when Carter referenced the one time he had met Verity before he’d met Brendon, that not being something he liked to think about. “Yeah- yeah, I remember, you don’t have to remind me about that” he said, almost too quickly after Carter had responded. It was pretty obvious that it was something that bothered Brendon, even though he would never say that it actually did. Sometimes the thought that Carter would want to be with Verity and not Brendon really got to him, but he thought Verity would feel bad if he admitted that that was a point of insecurity for him, so he kept it to himself. “Good, yeah” he looked back, wanting to push past the awkward feeling from a moment ago, and smiled softly. “I’ll probably pick the movie, you two don’t really watch the same stuff”

Vanessa was handing out flyers for the animal clinic fundraiser when she noticed someone who was walking by. “Hey excuse me I do not know if you noticed but your shoe is untied.” She said as she gestured to their foot.

Brendon looked over to the girl when she spoke out to him before looking down at his shoe, “Oh! Oh my gosh- thank you” he said sweetly, before leaning down to tie his shoe, “If I tripped that could’ve been really bad, thank you so much”

“I’m not old and out of touch enough to not know what a hickey looks like.” Harmony added, thinking that maybe she just shouldn’t have brought it up. It wasn’t really her place to do so technically. “We don’t have to talk about it. I just hope you’re being safe.” 

Brendon cleared his throat and took a sip of his water to try and give himself time to think of a response. “No- that’s not-... I’m not-..” he said before coughing when she talked about being safe. “That’s not-.. That’s not a concern- I’m not-... It’s-..” he shook his head.

 Verity continued to eat off of her food. She was a lot more hungry than she cared to admit and she was getting sick of her ramen noodles and simple pasta dishes. It was nice for a change, besides Brendon was a lot better at it than she was. “It certainly was!” She chuckled back at him. She continued to smile a bit teasingly at him, shaking her head, pretending to be oblivious. She eventually rolled her eyes when he began to plea, “I mean what is there to say? It wasn’t him, riiight?” She tried again, before shrugging, “Don’t worry, I won’t. I am not that cold and heartless.”

Brendon looked back over at her when she brought up if it was Carter who gave him the hickey again. “Verity” he said before shaking his head, still refusing to answer if the man in question was indeed Carter. “Good, thank you” he said, relieved, since he really wanted this to go well. “I just want this to go well, I really want y’all to get along”

  Carter shrugged, “Yeah maybe. It doesn’t happen too often.” He agreed with him, which mostly was because he didn’t care enough to be bothered by things in general. He was still too petty about a lot of things in his life and wished he had done things differently. “Alright, sounds like a plan. You don’t have to perfect anything on my account though. I am pretty certain you are doing a good job as it is.” He said with a shrug, thinking that to be true as Brendon did appear to be good at what he did. “Yeah, why not?” He said with a slight shrug, “What is the worse that can happen?” He added with a chuckle. “As long as there is popcorn, I’ll be there.” 

“I think I’m the opposite, I’m stressed out like....a lot.” he said with a small laugh, knowing he was about as anxious as a person could be. He smiled when Carter said he was sure he was doing a good job. “I’m doing okay at it- I mean I could be better for sure. Don’t get your hopes up too much, it’s nothing like... crazy” he said, already talking himself down so he wouldn’t embarrass himself too much if he messed up when he was showing Carter. He shook his head, “You two could hate each other, I think that would be the worst thing that could happen” he said, that being something he did worry about, and he worried about it a lot. “There will be popcorn, there always is I promise”

“Good, I am glad you hear that you are being responsible and cautious about it.” Harmony replied, knowing that sort of stuff was important. She’d met people through Broadway who’d injured themselves due to the point where they had to stop dancing, and she didn’t want that for Brendon.  As he adjusted his sweatshirt she noticed the small bruise on his neck and instantly knew what it was. In this moment Harmony knew she had two options: she could either freak out or trying to remain cool. “It seems like Verity isn’t the only one having fun.”

“I always am” he said with a small smile, knowing that he was generally a more cautious and responsible individual than the other people he knew that were his age. His eyes shot up at her next statement, feeling like his heart just stopped beating. “I beg your pardon?” he said, acting confused.

  Verity rolled her eyes at him, “Nooo,” She said, emitting a slight sigh as she didn’t want to admit to her friend that she was actually in fact broke because she needed a job so desperately, “I just know I am going to win anyway and I am sure you can spend your $20 on something else.” She added with a shrug. She took a bit of her food, smiling a little to herself, “This is so good!” She said, grateful to him. She raised an eyebrow at him, “About what?” She asked a bit teasingly as she pretended not to know what he was talking about. 

Brendon took a bite of his burrito and smiled at Verity when she said it was good. He liked cooking for her, it was just one of the many ways that he tried to show her how much he cared. “Breakfast burritos were definitely the right choice” he smiled before rolling his eyes when she spoke again. “You know what I’m talking about, Verity” he said before looking at her, “Please, please.. don’t say anything about any of it. I know you’re protective of me but I’m trying to figure it all out on my own. Please” he said, honestly worried that Carter would freak out if it seemed like Verity knew about anything between the teo boys.

 “Me? I am the relaxed one.” He smirked back at him, even though he was more of the outcast, black sheep so to speak, according to himself at least. He nodded simply in response to his words, “I have indeed.” He said, shifting the lane while they approached the cinema. “Oh yeah?” He said, not actually as surprised as he may have come across as, “Maybe you need to show me sometimes. I am more of a visual guy, so I am not going to take your word for it.” He laughed. “Sure! That sounds like it could be fun.” He agreed, thinking it would be a good chance for him to maybe get to know her a bit more as well. He knew she meant a lot to Brendon, so it was the least he could do.. As his friend of course ;). 

“That’s fair, yeah” he nodded, “You are really relaxed- like all the time. I think I’ve only ever seen you actually stressed out like....once? I think” he said, remembering how freaked out Carter had seemed after they kissed in the haunted house on Halloween. He looked back over at him and smiled brightly, “I’ll show you this week, I just want to perfect it a little more before I show you” he said, though he’d already gotten it down, he was just nervous about messing up in front of Carter. His smile only grew when he said he was down for a movie night with Verity at Brendon’s apartment, “Really?” he said, happily, “Awesome- yeah, I’ll plan it for all of us- it’ll be good” he nodded, already starting to overplan the evening in his head so he could make sure it was perfect.

“And I guess I should be reasonable.” Harmony replied with a small chuckle. Ever since Eliana was born she’d been trying hard to be more reasonable and responsible in general.  “Good, I am glad to hear you are being careful. I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself again.” She added, knowing that she worried that he pushed himself too hard. “Well, that is pretty exciting for her then I suppose.”

“I know. I promise I’m being careful, I really don’t want to get hurt so I’m being very cautious, trust me” he said, since he had really been in pain during those few weeks when he hurt his hip. He nodded and smiled softly when he talked about Verity again, “Yeah, I’m really excited for her- I hope it all works out” By now he’d forgotten about the hickey on his neck so he adjusted his sweatshirt to make it more comfortable.
