the dark night sky was covered by leafs and shadows, each tree standing tall like a mighty guardian over these peaceful woods, the only sounds roaming through this sacred place was those of the nightly predators, critters and the girl stepping in leafs

There was said to be a monster that lived in this forest. A creature that took residence among the trees, acted as a guardian. Selene felt inclined to believe the rumors, and yet...

She was there to disprove its existence. Or perhaps, establish some imagined dominance over it. ( After all, she was naught but a monster herself. ) Yes, that was it--- an exercise to bolster her own confidence. It took so much courage simply to come out to the woods, but there she was. And she took a deep breath, steeling her nerves for one final burst of that courage.

“Hey! Come out, you... forest guardian! I--- I’m not afraid of you!”

“U--Um...”

Her instincts screamed of danger. Selene wasn’t entirely certain why. But she found it difficult to speak even when it was safe, let alone when there was some undetermined threat nearby.

Something inside her was writhing in protest. Something inherently fearful of the divine and the good. Darkness always shrank away in the presence of light--- though tiny was she, the girl felt like she wanted to become even smaller, until she disappeared. She wanted to run, but was fixed in place.

The shadows close by twitched, ready to defend their mistress at any given moment.

The squeak the tiny girl made was undignified, to say the least, as slim frame collided with the other. Caught up in her own thoughts, Selene wasn’t even certain at this point if someone had just run into her, or if she herself simply hadn’t been paying attention to where she was going. Her default response was to immediately apologize, regardless.

“S--- Sorry, sorry! I, uh, I wasn’t paying attention!”

It was difficult to imagine anything dangerous about such a meek, fragile girl. But there was something not quite right about her presence, her pale skin and tired red eyes. Who was this girl, anyway?

“H--- Hello?”

Selene was hesitant to approach at all, even someone that seemed perfectly harmless. Nervous about everyone and everything, it was a near-constant struggle with her own fear to do something so simple as to ask for directions; even when she was in dire need as she was now.

She wasn’t sure how exactly she managed to get herself lost to this extent, but the fact remained that she was. If she had any hopes of making it back to familiar territory, she had to overcome herself and just ask.

“I, um... I’m a little lost. Can you, uh, tell me where I am...?”

Kid? As a young adult, Selene felt that was a sting to what dignity she had. Yet at the same time, she could easily see how someone could make that presumption. She was short, small, flat-chested--- a physique similar enough to that of a child to cause confusion.

“Wh--- Where did you--- Um... What’s your name?”

Stumbling from one thought to another, the girl cringed at herself. But, at least she managed to get one question out.

A cake? Well, Selene certainly appreciated the sentiment. Even if she didn’t feel she would be able to stomach much of it, she loved that someone thought enough of her to try and help her— especially when her calorie intake was so woefully low, she looked like she would surely wither away. She would take a few bites of it, at the least.

It… didn’t seem all that appetizing to her. But then, when was food ever that appealing to Selene? She just barely ate enough to survive as it was, and her frightfully thin frame showed as much. It would have been rude to reject the offer, though, so she accepted the candy bar nonetheless.

they revelled in their unease. It was oh so amusing and they were rather bored. They knew how their kind were represented in human culture, and they did enjoy reading through their funny little books.

They took a step forward, head dropping lower as they craned their neck to observe the rest of them. Searching for weapons mostly.

Finding nothing that demanded close attention, they drew back.

“And what manner of creatures are you?”

She didn’t have an answer for that. Dragons never were a common thing, of course they weren’t. That was why they were considered a thing of myth to most humans. Then again, most humans considered demons to be a myth.

No weapons could be seen on her scrawny form. There probably wasn’t anywhere she could hide them, anyway, even if she did have any. Selene froze in place as the dragon leaned in closer to examine her, allowing herself to relax a fraction only once they had pulled back so she had some figurative breathing room.

“I--- I’m... I’m a h-human...”

Not true and yet true at the same time. She was physically human, but the powers she possessed clearly were not.
