Police targeted DAPL protestors with water cannons in below-freezing temperatures

Temperatures near Standing Rock Reservation were below freezing Sunday night.

Morton County, North Dakota, police officers reportedly used water cannons and rubber bullets on about 400 unarmed protesters

Activists have reported that 167 people were injured Sunday night and seven were hospitalized with head injuries. Read more

URGENT: Women's Boat to Gaza kidnapped

We learned late yesterday that the Women’s Boat to Gaza was taken by Israeli authorities in international waters and in violation of international law.

Women from 13 countries were aboard, including IFOR member and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Mairead Maguire, and friend of FOR, U.S. Col. (retired, resigned in protest) Ann Wright.

Native American Protesters Halt Pipeline Construction Near North Dakota Reservation

The four-state pipeline would taint drinking water and infringe on sacred sites, according to the Sioux tribe.

During Sunday’s broadcast of C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, Heather McGhee, a black woman who is the president of the public policy organization Demos, was asked a curious question about prejudice and racial issues from a white man. Her beautiful response just went viral. 

Unfortunately, such questions have never been televised before and that explains the popularity of the video.

‘For as long as it takes’: Native American protesters defy North Dakota pipeline construction

“Joey Montoya, like other protesters near Cannon Ball, at the northern boundary of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota, sees himself as not just protecting the local community from a new oil pipeline – but also the country and the earth.

“Native communities are always just the first to be affected. We’re always at the front lines when oil companies come in.”

Montoya, a 22-year-old member of the Lipan Apache tribe from San Francisco, is part an influx of Native American and environmental activists from all over the country who have gathered in the remote part of the state to take a stand against the $3.7bn North Dakota Access Pipeline, which tribal members say threatens to pollute drinking water and damage sacred sites

In recent years, there have been a string of indigenous actions against oil pipelines in the US and Canada, but this one is already attracting especially broad support. On Facebook, Jon Eagle Sr, the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer at the Standing Rock Reservation, affirmed that the Seven Council Fires of the Sioux Nation – representing all Sioux groups – had come together for the first time since 1876 over this issue. Tribal chairman Archambault called in a statement for “my fellow American citizens (to) stand with my people”.

Mossett thinks that Native American pipeline activism may be at a crossroads. “This is the first time that the tribes have been coming together in recent history.”

For Susana Chamorro, helping homeless teens is personal.

“I know what it’s like. I was homeless as a youth. By the age of 5, I was on my own. I basically couch surfed, but when I was 11, the couches ran out. From 11 to 16, I was on the street. I did sex work to survive until I went to Job Corps and I’ve been working ever since.”

Susana is an outreach specialist with the Robin Hood-funded Ali Forney Center, the nation’s largest service provider dedicated to LGBT homeless youth. She roams the five boroughs delivering food, clothes, safe sex kits, and information to keep LGBT youth on the streets safe.

“We go to all the hotspots,” Susana said. “Places like Port Authority, the TWC building, Union Square, Christopher Street Pier, Jerome Ave and Fordham in the Bronx, and 149th and 3rd in the Bronx. We even use Facebook to contact clients. A lot of times they don’t have phone service, but they can get free Wi-Fi on their phones at the library, Barnes and Noble, or even at some train stations, so they’re always on social media.”
