Hey guys, sorry this blog hasn’t been as active as it used to be in the past couple months.

The whole situation regarding Covid-19 where I live has been really weighing heavily on me and the people I care about. As of right now and for a while longer I probably won’t be participating in too much fandom content for Death Stranding aside from the occasional reblog. The game’s more somber and darker atmosphere (despite the overall uplifting message of coming together) is not something I’m all that able to handle right now so I’m taking a minor break from it. Once everything improves again I’ll probably dive head first back in. For now though, I’m just going to lay low and try to indulge in some other games.

Higgs’ Journal Entry #24 || Year - UNKNOWN

My first memory is of looking up at the ceiling of our shelter, as a baby bawling my eyes out. All of a sudden, the hand of god comes into view, blotting out the steel sky. Daddy. Lifts me up, not gentle, but not hard. Shouts some stuff, but it’s all gibberish I can’t make heads or tails of.

He ain’t my real daddy, though. That one died before I was born, and Mama soon after. Of disease or something, I dunno. Her brother took me in, whisked me away from that shelter reeking of piss and death and brought me here. Daddy number two.

He never really took to it. He was an ugly, violent man, full of anger with nowhere to go. Tried to love me, in his own way, but I don’t know if he ever had it in him. Daddy told me our shelter was our world, and I believed him. I grew up thinking no one but us two existed. Then, when I got a little older, I started asking questions. Simple questions about where the food came from, that kind of thing. Got smacked upside the head for my troubles, but try as he might, he couldn’t beat the curiosity out of me.

One day I peeked at his monitor. It was the first glimpse I’d ever caught of the outside world. I pestered Daddy about it, and you bet I caught holy hell for it. But I wore him down, and eventually he came clean and admitted there was a whole world out there, soaked to the bone by timefall and overrun by demons that’d eat me up.

It occurred to me later that his fearmongering probably got my mama killed. Filling her head with his hysterics about the dead walking the earth, and the only safe haven being six feet under…

Was there ever a fandom consensus on what kind of scientist Heartman actually is/was? The closest I ever found to a description was a line taken from one of his interviews: “As for myself? Homo loquens. A linguist. One who seeks to understand this world through the language of science and logic.”

May I offer a suggestion? I wonder if he might have previously been some sort of Anthropologist. Given that he’s the character in the game that offers the player the most lore, both directly in-game or in the readable interviews, I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question. His interviews certainly cover everything from particle physics to history and human psychology. Maybe he’s just a polymath. 

Anthropology is the study of aspects of humans within past and present societies. Social anthropology, cultural anthropology, and philosophical anthropology study the norms and values of societies. Linguistic anthropology studies how language affects social life, while economic anthropology studies human economic behaviour. Biological (physical), forensic, and medical anthropology study the biological development of humans, the application of biological anthropology in a legal setting, and the study of diseases and their impacts on humans over time, respectively.
