how is a DOCTOR trying to convince me everyone has depression. Everyone gets sad, yes. Depression isn’t the same as getting sad because a tragedy happened. Depression is becoming a puddle on the floor for an hour because a Bald Eagle flew down the street and no one saw bc they’re on their phones.
When I said that example, I could hear the contempt in her voice. She thinks I’m pathetic and weak for this. She’s wrong. Fighting tragedy everyday is not weakness. Overcoming it every day is strength. Strength that “normal” people will never endure, unless a series of unfortunate events rage through their life. Most people do not experience the brain chemicals I experience every day, unless their loved ones pass away, or they lose their job and their spouse. Resilience is not weakness, crying is not weakness. It is an unfortunate (and really fucking shitty) byproduct of different brain chemistry. Different genes and environmental cues messing with different levels of a thousand different chemicals. Not weak, different. Wake up and smell the future.
Med school didn’t teach you everything. Learn up, doc. I’d be happy to teach you.
