unprompted thoughts about Goku and parenting I’ll just put it under the cut I’m complaining about letting Goku be problematic again fjdjd

but I really wish people were more open to examining Goku as a loving but not good father

it’s so interesting to me that Gohan fights under Piccolo and Chichi’s banners but the only time he’s fought under Goku’s is when someone else dressed him that way, and even by the end of the original series Goten changes his entire look to intentionally appear less like his dad while Trunks continues to draw inspiration from his own.

I hate people thinking being a bad father is immediately a moral condemnation and an accusation of abuse and neglect, instead of it just being the lack of a very specific skillset that is not intuitive to everyone. Goku’s never had a father figure, he’s only ever had martial arts mentors. That’s how he parents, which isn’t ideal for kids who don’t share his passion. And Goku doesn’t really have any other hobbies or interest in interpersonal bonding outside of battle/martial arts (which seems to he true of most Saiyan Warriors™️)!

I think it’s a really cool opportunity to explore how parents and children don’t always connect the way you hope, even though nobody’s doing anything wrong and the love is there. Toriyama’s stories feature a lot of ‘love on it’s own isn’t always enough’ conflict points in and out of the fight scenes and I wish the fandom wasn’t so quick to assume saying Goku’s not a good father means Goku doesn’t love his children. His love not translating well to those skills doesn’t mean it’s not abundant, it just means it doesn’t translate to those specific skills well and it’s not an uncommon thing for parents and children to deal with.

I had the Buddy Dad who is more buddy than parent experience twice myself and as a result I’m much closer to my mom, I just see my dad when I see him because we’re just very different people. I have no doubt that he would trade the world to see me safe and happy, but as people we have nothing to talk about. Likewise I’ve got friends who were adopted and spend time with their biological parents. They’re wonderful people who love their kids but just make better friends than parents! That’s okay! They made the right choice to find their child a safe home with someone who was ready to be a parent! The presence of love is not under scrutiny!

It’s not a rare thing, and I wish that lens could be applied to Goku without it being taken as accusing Goku of being a horrible person who secretly hates his family. People can be willing to fight and die for you and still not have great relationship skills, and Goku has always been that guy.

Idk man I just wish that wasn’t considered hating on Goku or some kind of hot take. Especially when it’s Toriyama’s own opinion about his own oc. I think it makes him and his relationship with his kids more interesting and a sharp contrast to his peers, which Goku has also always been.

I often think about how conversations and emotions went when Vegeta was given over to Freeza’s service. I imagine that the monarchy had to present it one way to little Vegeta himself and the planet at large while privately realizing what kind of monster Freeza was. Maybe they didn’t care so much about the planet conquering, but they wouldn't, deep down, want their son and heir to be enslaved and humiliated (and potentially experimented on or worse).

Some Dragon Ball headcanons I have in my rotting brain that might be a little stupid but I like them

Saiyans still get somewhat of a power boost from a full moon even without tails. They have quicker reaction times and can take more damage. However, it isn’t as much of a boost as the Great Ape form.

Hitto is Hit’s full name and he just prefers to be called Hit. It also adds aura to him, so theres that 🥹

Piccolo wears earplugs more often than not due to his Namekian super hearing often causing his discomfort or pain

Salza’s loyalty to Cooler used to be shaky when he first started serving under him, until Cooler once saved his life during a mission. He never doubted Cooler after that. (It might have also been his gay awakening 💔)

Frieza doesn’t care what pronouns you call him. He usually just goes with whatever pronoun is most used on whatever planet he’s on, which is commonly he/him.

Vegeta’s favorite color is pink, he just doesn’t tell anyone it is.

Whenever the Ginyu Force doesn’t want to train, Ginyu bribes them with the promise of ice cream sundaes afterward, which ALWAYS works.

Speaking of, Jeice often steals the other’s ice cream when they aren’t looking. His greed knows no bounds.

Golden Frieza’s skin is actually metallic, like a suit of armor. I like to imagine the metal pipe sound effect playing every time he gets punched.

I rlly love Vegeta and Bulma. I feel as though Vegeta takes pride in Bulma being his wife, and Bulma takes pride in Vegeta being her husband. They luv each other so much, and I don’t understand people that say they hate each other

But yeah! That’s very much the canon in the Toriyamaverse. I find people just either hate Bulma because of their own crush on (or other projection onto) Vegeta, or they hate them both for whatever reasons they have and try to undermine them because they hate that they’re canonically happy.

I’m sure the Briefs are talked about in the same vein as people like Elon, Bezos, and Meta lizardmen in universe, at most the parents are seen like the Gates with charity work while the daughter bought a private cruise ship as a flex instead of a “normal” mega yacht.

And Vegeta thinks so little of money, he just casually gives it away to 17.

The RRA did not have to try hard on the “evil trillionaire is in bed with aliens” in all senses of the phrase during Super Hero.
