I will never appreciate anything more than how the presence of swallows provides a mosquito-free experience, even when standing directly in a swamp at sunset. We should all thank swallows today.

Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) 📍 Essex County, ON
Today in why birding is never a dull moment: technically, this bird has changed names since I took these pictures two months ago. In October of 2025, the NACC reclassified the warbling vireo into two species - the eastern warbling vireo (Vireo gilvus) and western warbling vireo (Vireo swainsoni).
The split is understandable, with the two newly-split species having different calls, plumage, and wintering grounds. There is actually very little crossover between the two geographically!

Stilts are very good at looking like they were drawn by a child. They toddle around on their cartoonishly long legs, plucking invertebrates out of the shallow water.
