TWENTY-FIVE CUBS?!?! Im no expert but that sounds like a lot! Do we know what the average cubs-born-per-year number is?

to be clear, there are 25 spring cubs -- that number is not counting the 5 yearlings in the area, nor is it counting 128jr who is 2.5 years old but got adopted.

the number of spring cubs fluctuates for a few reasons -- namely, the number of single sows the previous season, and the strength of the salmon run the year before. i think at this point we have set a record for the number of spring cubs at Brooks River, but i am not certain if the same is true for number of cubs overall or total number of family groups.

the number of single sows who were old enough to have cubs was very high last year, thanks to a combination of many emancipations happening and several young sows maturing. Additionally, the salmon run last year was crazy huge, so basically every sow who was able to have cubs got fat enough to support a pregnancy.

i would be very interested to know if the average litter size was larger than usual this year, i can't remember a time when we had this many triplets, but we also don't have any quads and i know those have happened in previous years (though, rarely).

its been really fun having so many springers around, even if it is hard for us when they get into trouble. i cant wait to see the subadult gangs in a few years time!
