A breakdown of ~The Stair Scene~ [3x01]
Nancy as a person is emotionally closed-off. Her growth in this area since the pilot has been EXPONENTIAL, but it is still a present trait to an extent.
After already having willingly opened up to Ace about not getting into Columbia, she later has yet another one-on-one with him to discuss it again:
Nancy: "I was so sure that [Columbia] was where I wanted to go. To figure it all out."
Nancy pauses here, looking to Ace for input. She intensely values his opinion.
It takes him a moment to respond. "I guess the point is just... to go..." Ace slowly stumbles, "...elsewhere, right? If- that's what you want."
The hesitation is evident in his voice, but his crestfallen face + uncomfortable body language is even more telling.
Nancy, awkwardly trying to lighten the mood: "Yeah. Yeah, I can start some supplemental essay prompts this weekend or something."
Ace, already dreading the idea of Nancy not being a part of his daily life, makes a lighthearted bid to spend more time with her: "I can help you proofread."
"Thanks," Nancy laughs, and Ace smiles at her smile.
Nancy, actively in love with him, continues smiling and looks down to her hands. Ace, unaware of his feelings but contemplating life without her, grows solemn as he ponders.
