Although the reign of King Edward VII lasted only from 1901 to 1910, the Edwardian period is often extended beyond Edward's death in 1910 to include the years up to the start of World War I in 1914. The available recordings of music, such as wax cylinders played on phonographs, were poor in quality by modern standards. Live performances, both amateur and professional, were popular. Henry Wood, Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, Arnold Bax, George Butterworth, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Thomas Beecham were all active. Military brass bands often played outside in parks during the summer. [Wikipedia] This was the period in Western classical music during which modernity took hold and romanticism began fading into the background (though it lived on in one guise or another into the late 20th century at least.) Classical music composed, premiered, published or revised between the years 1914 (the year the “war to end all wars" began) and 1945 (the year the war that followed ended.) This was actually a very auspicious period for modern and late romantic music with many great works appearing. Undoubtedly the two wars that bookend this period had a considerable influence on the composers of the period and the period that immediately followed. Many composers during this time attempted through some of their compositions to come to grips with the realities of war while in other compositions, perhaps of an even more reactionary nature, attempted to escape those same realities. Some of the greatest compositions of the period incorporated both of these paths in different sections.

Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (Russian: Никола́й Ка́рлович Ме́тнер, Nikoláj Kárlovič Métner; 5 January 1880 [O.S. 24 December 1879] – 13 November 1951) was a Russian composer and pianist.
A younger contemporary of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin, he wrote a substantial number of compositions, all of which include the piano. His works include fourteen piano sonatas, three violin sonatas, three piano concerti, a piano quintet, three works for two pianos, many shorter piano pieces, and 108 songs including two substantial works for vocalise. His 38 Skazki (generally known as "Fairy Tales" in English but more correctly translated as "Tales") for piano solo contain some of his most original music and are as central to his output as the piano sonatas. Rimsky Korsakov - Capriccio Espagnol Op 34 - Berliner Phil (Dir. Zubin Mehta)
A wonderful outdoor evening performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1887 orchestral suite Capriccio Espagnol before a large crowd at the Waldbuhne (Olympic Stadium) in Berlin in 1997. The musicians appear to be really enjoying themselves here. And why not - - - it’s such a joyous piece. One might easily imagine that were Rimsky-Korsakov alive today he’d be composing thrilling contemporary music for blockbuster films.

Rimsky Korsakov - Capricho Español Op 34 - Berliner Phil (Dir.Zubin Mehta) Waldbuhne in Berlin 1997 - St Petersburg Night Daniel Barenboim (piano) / Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Zubin Mehta Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (18 March 1844— 21 June1908), was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. Mainly known for his symphonic works, especially the popular symphonic suite Sheherazade, as well as the Capriccio Espagnol and the Russian Easter Festival Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov left an oeuvre that also included operas, chamber works, and songs. Rimsky-Korsakov’s music is accessible and engaging owing to his talent for tone-coloring and brilliant orchestration. Furthermore, his operas are masterful musical evocations of myths and legends.

Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 (final portion of 4th mvt.) Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Andris Nelsons rec. 2 December 2011
Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 was started in winter 1900 in Rapallo, Italy, and finished in 1902 in Finland. It was first performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society on 8 March 1902, with the composer conducting.
In Finland, this popular work with its grandiose finale was connected by some with the struggle for Finland’s independence, even being popularly dubbed the “Symphony of Independence”, as it was written at a time of Russian sanctions on Finnish language and culture. Sibelius’s reaction to this has been widely debated; some claim that he had not intended any patriotic message and was purely identified as a nationalist composer, while others believe that he wrote the piece with an independent Finland in mind.

Ancient Egyptian music notation From a set of 6 parchments described by German musicologist Hans Hickmann in his 1956 book Musicologie Pharaonique, or Music under the Pharaohs, as dating from the 5th to 7th centuries C.E. Colors are presumed to indicate pitch and size to indicate duration. Writings on the parchment are in Coptic with indications like “Spiritual Harmony” and “Holy Hymn Singer”. This manuscript had a profound influence on Egyptian composer Halim El-Dabh’s music notation and paintings when he discovered a reproduction in Vogue magazine in 1952.

Music modulates levels of dopamine in the brain which is a chemical responsible for reward and pleasure. It also modulates serotonin levels and norepinephrine, a stimulant. And in the right combinations, these can give rise to feelings of ecstasy and intense pleasure — almost a sense of being at one with the world.
