Healthy people who say stuff like “they’re still doing things so they can’t be in THAT much pain” need to understand that after a certain point pain becomes boring. No, you never get used to the pain, but you do gradually become bored. After months or years of mindless suffering in bed eventually you learn how to watch TV, do a light hobby, etc., even while in extreme pain, simply because chronic pain is incredibly dull and humans need entertainment.
At a certain point you reach the “it’s going to hurt anyway, might as well do whatever the fuck I want”.
Also distracting yourself from the pain is a form of pain management, like my pain is largely untreatable currently but is also immensely high, if I do something I enjoy to distract myself (or more like a couple of things I like at once) it means I’m keeping my brain from fixating on the pain which is worse, as even if it doesn’t change the level of pain it makes it so it isn’t at the forefront of my mind
Distractions are literally the only reason I’m at all functioning at this point
i genuinely think we need to practice being listeners more, putting ourselves in other people’s shoes more, looking beyond our own problems more. the only way to foster truly deep connections is through listening to others as much as we want to be listened to by others. i cannot stress the importance of cultivating a natural curiosity for other people’s stories and feeling for them, as much as we feel for ourselves and our own issues, enough. in the end it’s all about loving as much as we want to be loved
Remember this is a skill. That means good listening and curiosity can be learned. Sure some people seem to be naturally better at it but its probably because they've practiced more.
And of you're thinking "yeah but depression makes it hard to care about anyone else when you're drowning".
It absolutely does! The trick is to just ask questions and keep the other person talking. You don't have to focus too hard on the answers but you'll find yourself doing that automatically so you can ask another question.
Benefits are:
- helps stop isolating behaviours
- involves you in their life, fosters genuine strong connections
- connection + helping others gives a seretonin hit
- over time it quiets your own thoughts to focus on listening, good short term distraction
Chronic pain is awesome (/s) because it's like, I can't go anywhere when I'm in a flare, even to the doctors, because of the pain. But if I go when I'm NOT in a flare, my symptoms look so much more mild than they really are.
"Your range of motion seems great!" Maybe it is now but when my back pain flares I can't even turn my head without pain shooting down into my feet!
Also even the most steady machine will stop working as well if it is over loaded or the conditions for it to function are not met!
If you don't clean out your vacuum bag it will not work. If your stove elements aren't plugged in correctly your stove will not heat up. If your aluminum pan stamping machine is made to stamp 2x the amount of pans it stamps in the same about if time it will overheat and work worse, possibly forever.
You are not a machine, but even machines cannot work steadily in adverse conditions. Give yourself at least that much grace.
it sure did!
Is it to late to get the extended warranty?
One of the risks of being quiet is that the other people can fill your silence with their own interpretation: You're bored. You're depressed. You're shy. You're stuck up. You're judgmental. When others can't read us, they write their own story - not always one we choose or that's true to who we are.
