1970s Peasants: Simplicity 7880

It was Yves St. Laurent who introduced the couture socialite to peasant wear in 1976 and the pattern companies picked up on it immediately as you can see. Of course, these weren’t real peasants eating cabbage and working the land, but very rich peasants based on the Russian ballet with glorious floor-length skirts in opulent fabrics of laces and velvets and trimmed in fur. For the rest of us, Simplicity suggested all the plain cottons, the muslins, the broadcloths, the chambrays, while the vest could be in velveteen. Far more affordable and washable, but not exactly what YSL was showing.

But you could pretty it up by using a border prints or mixing fabrics or adding trims, or using what they call “scarf fabrics.” Those are ribbons at the neck and front opening. The blouse has a yoke so a rayon or wool challis (also recommended) would be nice too. Such fabric with drape would do well when gathered as they do not create bulk. Bulk matters a bit less in the blouse where it can be helpful if you want to enhance your bustline. Challis would help de-pouf the skirt which has the gathered waist and perfectly rectangular pattern piece which is truly peasant design, but tends to make your hips look enormous. Something I learned in the 70s making a dirndl skirt because it was simple and only to realize I was now big as a house.

he got the CO detector out, saw that it was in dangerous levels (there was a problem with an underground parkade in his building, iirc), calmly went “shit”, and went to the hospital. If he didn’t get that advice, he would most likely be dead now.

The best part? He didn’t get a webcam app or anything. He just made a folder, called it Webcam, and called it a night in his carbon monoxide induced delirium.

This is honestly one of my favorite Reddit stories.
