Insomnia...

... Led him to clean every dusty trinket in the Rock of Eternity, but even that didn’t seem to tire him enough to return to his bed.

Being a hero is complicated.

First, it starts as a sting that doesn’t let you forget something that worries you.

It continues with distractions in the middle of a fight that could basically cost you your life.

It worsens with random moments of disconnection that make your teammates worry.

And now, it ends with terrible insomnia.

“There’s so much to do,” Billy tells himself again. “I can use this time to save time.”

But it simply doesn’t make him feel sleepy, it only worsens what he believes is a migraine in progress.

Again... He tells himself he will get better.

He doesn’t.

But when it finally happens in the middle of a League meeting, he thinks it’s unfair to fall asleep when he doesn’t want to.

The days get worse, and he realizes he doesn’t remember the last time he slept properly. Oh, Zeus help him, he doesn’t even remember when he slept at all.

Superman: Billy, is there something bothering or worrying you?

Marvel: Sorry... Did you say something?

Bruce joins them.

Bruce: Billy, when was the last time you slept?

"hat's curious... Billy thought that too...

He seems to have experience with this, Billy thinks as he tries to focus his attention. Bats don’t sleep, he must have said that many times... Do they sleep in bunks? Would they sleep in a coffin like...?

Bruce: Clack, take him to his room, I’ll bring something from the cafeteria.

Clack: Billy, can you stand up?

Billy: I’m not... sure.

Clark: I’m going to lift you, okay, buddy?

Billy: But I’m... very heavy...

Clark: Don’t worry. I’ve got this.

Time must be upset with Billy because the young hero doesn’t remember the journey to his room in the Watchtower.

He really can’t remember it.

But now, he just wanted to remember the pillow pressed against his face.

Bruce: How is he?

Clark: He's completely exhausted... but I haven’t managed to get him...

Bruce: ...get him to transform back into his human form.

Clark: Yeah, and I’m not sure if he’s really resting if he stays as the Captain.

Bruce: His exhaustion has manifested in his magical form; maybe sleep works the same way.

Clack: But we should call—

Bruce: I already did. Zatanna will be here in an hour.

Clark: That’s a relief.

Bruce: We need to talk to him when he wakes up.

Clack: I’ll take him to Kansas; some time at the Kent farm might help. It’s quite peaceful.

Bruce: That sounds like the best option. Gotham is anything but peaceful.

Clark: What do you think happened?

Bruce: Probably extreme exhaustion from lack of sleep—or something magical. But that’s unlikely. Let’s act on what we know, and Zatanna will handle the rest.

Clark: You’re a good father.

Bruce: Must be the practice... Alfred still teaches me a lot.

Clark: Your modesty makes you even more worthy of praise.

Bruce: ... You too.

With one last glance at an exhausted Captain Marvel, Batman left to wait for Zatanna...

He thought Alfred might make his famous chicken soup.

In front of him, there is a sheet of paper. It is important, just like many things have been in his life.

It is a job application.

It's the second one he's submitted.

The first was for the Justice League, and technically speaking, he's still working there.

But now, he is officially a grown-up teenager, and he needs to take this big step.

He is not part of the great Wayne Enterprises, Queen Industries, or anything similar.

This, he has achieved on his own, and that makes it even more valuable.

"Radio WHIZ"

He will work as a junior assistant to the warehouse manager. It's not what he had expected, but the career path could lead him to an internship in the offices where the radio program is recorded.

Everything with patience... And speaking of that.

HR: Everything looks in order, you just need to write down your parents' phone numbers on form 15F to complete the paperwork.

Yes, things like this still follow him. It’s not easy to say he lives on his own, that the address he provided is one of the safe houses Red Robin lent him, or that the phone number he wrote on the record is registered under Clark Kent’s name...

But if there's one thing he is certain about, it's that he has friends who understand him and have given him ways to handle situations like this.

Billy: My family lives in different cities.

HR: No problem, kid.

Two names were written on the paper. The HR woman read them with a bit of surprise. If you were in the industry, it was mandatory to recognize those names.

HR: Bruce Wayne is your guardian?

Billy: I prefer to call him my emergency contact.

HR: And this Clark Kent… isn’t he the Clark Kent from The Daily Planet?

Billy: I also prefer to call him my emergency contact.

She seems to ignore what he says, but continues the conversation.

HR: Sorry for the question, but why are you applying for a job like this when you could be working with them?

Billy: Because I want to do this on my own, and I like this city.

HR: Kid, you have something special, I can feel it. And I know for a fact that Mr. Sterling Morris likes seeing that in people

She definitely confirmed the phone numbers after Billy left. Protocol required verifying the applicants’ information.

Can you imagine the surprise she felt when hearing the voices of the Bruce Wayne or the renowned reporter Clark Kent?

She couldn't believe it, it was them! And they accompanied him on his first day of work a week later.

Recipe #7 – Spicy Meat for the Sacrifice

- Six harpy eggs - Three jars of crushed sun fire - Two mantles of dehydrated hydra skin - Includes concentrated evil powder (but if unavailable, it can be replaced with thorns of wrath) - Sentenced wood

Do you know what can be prepared with these ingredients?

Even the cauldron holding the magical stew didn't seem to know.

But…

Barry: Dried meat?

Marvel: Yes.

Clark: It's green…

Marvel: Yes, hydra skin is green.

Barry: Is it dried hydra meat?

Marvel: Yes, it's very nutritious and perfect for winter. Each bite regulates the body temperature of the one who eats it to a warm… They didn’t use degrees, but the analogy compared it to a hug from Hestia.

Barry clenches his jaw before taking the first bite. But as soon as the meat touches his tongue, his temperature starts to rise.

Clark: No way... Is this spicy?!

Barry: Spicy!? This is boiling lava!! It's way too hot!!

Clark: It's delicious!

Clark enjoys each bite and eats a little more.

Marvel: The ancient priests used it as an offering to thank for a warm summer every solstice.

Barry waits for Captain Marvel to leave and then runs to Antarctica to lick a glacier, after finishing the Watchtower's milk reserves, of course.

Clark asks for more to take home. For the first time in his life, he's tasting something spicy!

The Roses 🌹

There is something Billy has discovered within the Library of the Rock.

It explains why Black Adam has given black roses to his allies.

Each rose absorbs and copies the soul of its owner. Thus, if the host perishes, the rose serves as a backup for their soul…

A curious reason why villains are, in a way, relatively immortal… and also why no one dares to enter Kahndaq to threaten or extort the magical king.

To keep up with the game’s pace, you already know what Billy has been cultivating in the Rock over the past few months.

Marvel: Happy Friendship Day! Superman: Thanks, Captain!

Marvel: Happy Women's Day! Wonder Woman: Thanks, brother.

Marvel: Happy White Day! Green Arrow: Thanks, buddy, but we’re not in…

Marvel: Happy Roses Day! Black Canary: Thanks, Captain, they’re beautiful!

Marvel: They’re waterproof… Aqualad: Thank you so much, Captain, Mera will love them!

Marvel: Happy "Don’t throw away the roses your friends give you" Day.

Only two remained. Batman had to accept one under the social pressure of the other members, but…

Marvel: Happy… you know what, just don’t throw away the rose. I cultivated them myself…

This is the third time he has gifted a rose to Guy, but also the third time he knows the rose has withered without fulfilling its purpose.

Marvel: Guy, please stop throwing away the roses! They’re difficult to care for and they’re for your own good!

Guy: I knew it! I knew there had to be something magical about them if you kept insisting.

Marvel: Friend, it's just a rose… with a certain… attachment to… just keep it for a couple of days and return it to me. You’ll thank me one day, I know it.

Guy: To be honest, Marvel, I’m not taking the rose…

Marvel: You’re taking advantage of my vow not to lie.

Guy: And you of my good faith.

Billy’s eyebrow rises, he can’t help it, but he takes a deep breath.

Marvel: It will safeguard your soul. If something irreversible were to happen, I could bring you back…

But Guy’s gaze still shows confusion and discomfort at his response.

Marvel: It's a backup of your soul, like an extra life in Super Mario Bros.

Guy: Well… that is definitely a strange gift… but I don’t have to eat it or do anything weird, right?

Marvel: Not at all. Just keep it close to you for a couple of nights and the rose will do the rest.

Marvel: Actually works!

One unexpected breath later, makes people doubt the mysterious gifts of Captain Marvel.

Recipe #6 – "Cheese Fingers...?"

Terrified in a corner, they watched the most powerful mortal eat… chew and swallow fingers…

Once…

And again…

Oliver: Can someone think of the children?!

Canary: What children?

Oliver: Roy is still developing and is highly impressionable!

Roy: What are you talking about, old man?! I'm definitely not a kid…

Roy look clearly.

Roy: What the hell is that?! Cap, those are fingers?!

Marvel: Oh no, these aren’t real. Well, yes, they’re fingers and yes, they were in someone’s hands, but it isn’t exactly “someone.” They’re really not from this plane of reality, and their concept is more abstract than life itself… But it’s almost the same as eating an apple or a nut… Yes, it was part of a hand and, yes, it was part of something that could complain… But I swear it’s almost like in the dimension where everything was cotton candy. I mean, that was an accident and I apologized. But, back to the topic of the fingers…

He takes one and bites it.

Marvel: They’re cheese fingers, magically processed…

He extended one to Roy.

Marvel: Want one?

Roy: Hmmm… I think Dinah remembers that my doctor forbade me from eating things high in… what do you say they’re made of?

Marvel: Corrupt magic, infused in a world with physical conditions similar to a cheese finger factory. I know because I left them there myself six hundred years ago.

Roy: D—Definitely. I can't eat it. Am I right, Dinah?

Canary: Yes… Roy is still growing and he shouldn’t eat anything outside the protein diet of things from our world.

Billy lets them go while adding a final note to the book:

Use a food processor and shape it into normal cheese fingers.

Midnight and a Prophecy

When the ghost of the Oracle of Delphi gave him a prophecy about him escorting his wife... who would come from the future... and that he should protect her from her pursuers for three days, he did not understand what that might entail.

The only thing that mattered was that someone very important to him would soon come to see him, and he needed help.

There was nothing more to ask.

Days later, something sparkled in the eyes of the Champion of Earth. You won’t believe it, but he had found something marvelous after the latest cyber attack on the Justice League’s database.

Marvel: The emergency hangar wasn’t declared by the Justice League atop a rocky outcrop on a coastal cliff in California… Coordinates… Smoke-gray color…

In the middle of that attack, at the very last moment, right before his eyes, the information was being erased and fading away, devoured by a lethal computer virus…

The villain lose. Cyborg is fine, but much of the data was lost forever, and inadvertently, The Captain Marvel discovered that the information from that base no longer exists.

So he paid a brief visit to his possible new operations base.

Charming.

No, really, not sarcastically. It truly is.

It has water, electricity, supplies, and plenty of furniture. It’s not exactly a bombproof bunker, but it’s perfect... his very own twenty square meters of happiness.

Speaking of happiness…

Soon, the eclipse that would bring his guest would occur.

Time is so silent when tries to escape in a hurry.

A second prophecy from the ghost compels him to carry with him a fire sword. She will arrive, pursued by those who seek to hurt her.

And once again, the silence is stifled by the passage of time.

The fact that the captain appeared on national television kicking a creepy creature in the midst of the Nevada desert didn’t generate as much surprise as we expected. What truly shocked everyone was how the captain desperately tried to protect... a woman, who wore a cape embroidered with golden threads like that of the captain himself, a woman who hid her face as best as she could, a woman who concealed a protruding belly.

??

Everyone: ??

Not to mention that the entire League helped the captain in the incarned battle.

Marvel: Thank you for helping me, guys. I don’t know what I would have done if my wife had been injured.

Hal: Are you married?! You’re literally a clumsy college student, how is that possible?

Flash: Just like they teach it in high school, Hal.

Hal: Don’t help, Bardo. You know what I mean!

Superman: Anyone need medical attention?

Marvel: Fortunately not, but guys... I must ask for your help for the next three days. Something dangerous is pursuing her; I’m not exactly sure what it is, but the oracle says that on the fourth day everything will be alright.

Wonder Woman: We will help you, brothers. It will be an honor, and I hope that we can get to know her more calmly, if you allow us.

Marvel: I’m sorry… the oracle forbade me and others from seeing her face until the fourth day

Batman: A prophecy. Do you trust that oracle, Captain?

Marvel: It’s complicated, but she is part of my family and I will protect her with all my strength.

Flash: Are you blonde?

Marvel: Barry, don’t cheat!

Flash: I’m sorry, it was Hal’s fault.

You and I know that since that day, Billy liked blondes more.
