Ideas for: Beyond the Frame..

When looking over the brief for this module, the freedom in the project allows me to present my expression within identity within society. Im very interested by the idea of society shaping individuals to fit within the identity formed as a “norm” within female culture.

Why do females dress the way they do?

How do you feel about body image? Your body image?

Do you feel you dress the way you do to adapt to your body shape?

Are you happy with the way you look?

Do you feel the retail industry offers you support and options to support your individual body type/ shape?

Do you feel pressured to dress a particular way to fit in within the “norm” of society?

I am going to explore these areas, especially social media, and i believe this plays a big part within the influence with the issues believed within the identity displayed by women. I think it would also be interesting to explore how this effects males.

Module Choice

After much thought, research and consideration, I have decided to choose Professional practice which is work experience. This is suited to me much more than the other options and I am a very practical person. I feel that a wider range of experience will benefit me more than the modules of exhibition, creative encounters, science.

“In this module students will undertake and negotiate a period of work placement relevant to their professional interests that enables them to experience the daily reality of that profession: e.g. shadowing artists/photographers, working as assistants in galleries, teaching assistants, web-site companies, post production video or completion of a piece of commissioned work for a professional client.”

Eileen Perrier will be the tutor for this module. Deadline is September. Jan to April is teaching.

Opportunities

I am currently looking for a work experience or internship for the summer period. I have applied to a few fashion advertisements online using reed or indeed.com. I will update when I apply for more and any responses I get.

Business Cards!

This design is progression from the last set i have designed previously for my business. These are updated with my new website, Facebook, twitter, email and contact number. The three images used are presenting what I do rather than listing all the services I provide. “Freelance” Photographer goes well with this and backs the images up. The layout of the card is simple, clear and sophicicated, representing my business.

John William Keedy “Its Hardly Noticeable”

“It’s Hardly Noticeable explores the world of a character who navigates living with an unspecified anxiety-based mental illness. He negotiates situations constructed to highlight the impacts and implications of his differences on his thoughts and behaviors, and by doing so raises question of normalcy. Through constructed tableaus and metaphorical still lifes, the series reveals the relationship between reality and perception, and highlights issues of pathology while questioning stereotypes of normalcy.

In 2009 economist Bill Gross used the term New Normal to define the American economic landscape of the very recent past. In ensuing years, the term resonated with culture at large and became an umbrella term for changes in cultural and societal practices, identifying a shift in held notions of what is commonly viewed as acceptable.

These images question the legitimacy of applying the term normal in a societal context by prompting a reconsideration of what, if anything, is normal, or at least what is perceived and labeled as such. Is it possible for a society to have a commonly held idea of what is normal, when few individuals in that society actually meet the criteria for normalcy?”

Noriko Yabu

Norkio Yabu displays a range of images of which effect are mesmerising. The colours are eye catching and the human form is displayed in such a way which is quite garden, but some instances, relaxed. 

The exposure  is equally lit. If I were to do this, I would use a soft box because the source of light would be spread equal and would be soft.

“The Copy”

This is my version of the copy of the painting before it was edited. In my opinion, it is far off to the original image, but I will change the colour, exposure and contrast in photoshop Adobe. I was unable to create the effect purely in reality due to the time given and the accuracy which had to be given. The time frame was too small and I feel I did not organise my time effectively to bring myself closer to the indented outcome.

The egg shells did not create the same effect as the ones in the painting - but paintings do not usually give a accurate perspective of an object, so it was risky choosing a painting. The shadow was easy to create by using one light from the right, using a snoot, aiming directly at the jar from an angle. 

Comparing the lighting from the copy image, I could have experimented with different lighting to get the left side equally lit up as i feel that there are too many shadows on the left side. However, I did try this, and it subtracted the harsh shadow on the left on the image. I felt that the harsh shadow was more important than the un-equally lit jar as the necessary tools in photoshop would equipped in sorting it out. 

ACTIONS IN PHOTOSHOP

- Get rid of all the scratches and spots and smears on the jar. The spot healing tool or patch tool will be good for this.

- Narrow the blue line (Keep it scruffy) - need to find a way of doing this.

- Increase the contrast (Curves)

-Increase the colour cast

- Increase Lighting ( Curves and Levels )

MISTAKE

I took the top image at the gallery, and went with that image to match my copy. This was the wrong Idea to do, as the picture taken on my phone is totally different to the original i found on the website of Stephen Johnson.

As you can see, they are both completely different from each other and would have led me to create a wrong impression of “The Copy”. In future, I will only use images taken on phones (second hand) as reference, to find the originals taken professionally to get a better suited reality.

“The Copy” Lighting Setup

CHANGED lighting set up- Swapped the snoot  for direct lighting

This casts a direct shadow to the left of the object, imitating Stephen Johnson's painting. It also projects the lighting to create a moody atmosphere, which i need it to be light, look fun and airy. I can adjust lighting and enhance colours in photoshop.

I have been having problems with the reflection on the glass jar, as it is not matching with the painting. However I will experiment with manipulation using photoshop to get rid of the extra reflections.

IDEAS

This is a lighting set up drawing of the idea of the outcome I am intending to create. The equipment I will need is:

2x Battery packs

2x lights

2x light stands

Sinc Lead

Light Metre

Snoot

Large Format Camera

I will give this idea a trial and will see on the improvements i can make. 

- The light coming from the right hand side in a form of ascot will create a hard shadow on the left hand side. Any light on the left hand side will soften that hard shadow out and lesson the effect. 

- Paintings are sometimes hard to re-act in reality as shadows and positions can not always be created to how the artist has created the image.
