Bray Wyatt Draft Thoughts

At Wrestlemania WWE went with the curious decision to have Bray Wyatt, built so well with superb victories at Elimination Chamber and the subsequent triple threat vs Styles and Cena, drop his title to his long term rival Randy Orton.  To me, that didn’t make sense.

The match itself was one of the more eagerly anticipated on the card given the longevity in the build and it seemed wise to finally flick the switch on a popular star who, up until then, had seldom come out on top in his major feuds. 

Bryan and Cena both went over him and as much as it’s said “Putting him opposite The Rock at Wrestlemania is a feather in his cap” he was swiftly dispatched with there and lost a reunion tour put on for Undertaker and Kane.

Wyatt and Orton battled through a gimmick heavy match which lacked time and gave fans an unsatisfactory conclusion. And with it, the story rumbled on. Wyatt and Orton will do battle at the Raw branded PPV, Payback. It’s a house of horrors match. 

Will Wyatt win this? Seeing as Lesnar hasn’t been drafted, it’s reasonable to assume that the top title will remain on Smackdown and not with the recently drafted Bray Wyatt. So, Orton looks likely to win again against Wyatt, in a match which Wyatt has proposed and designed. 

It shan’t end there either. Wyatt is positioned as a heel which means Balor, Rollins and Reigns lie in wait. Balor was the first Universal Champion so I can’t foresee any major Wyatt wins there, Rollins is likely to go over Joe and has long been a major flag bearer for the top WWE brand and Reigns, well...

I’ve long agreed with JR that Wyatt would be best positioned as a face, given the audience interaction with his entrance. It is precisely this though which is causing the reluctance to flick the switch. Why bother when he’s cheered and followed regardless? Enzo & Cass are another example.

But whilst writing this, I’ve had a thought.

It’ll be good to see Wyatt win on April 20, perhaps that’s why Styles is in line for a US title match. Perhaps Wyatt will be Raw’s full time champ with Lesnar there as the major attraction. I think it could work. It’d elevate he and the US Title all in one.

Thoughts and questions following Wrestlemania 33

So, in no particular order, this is what’s going on in my head following Wrestlemania 33. A show that showed the great depth that WWE has. 

Have they built Braun Strowman at the wrong time?

WWE did an excellent job of building big Braun Strowman towards the end of 2016 and through early 2017, to the point that people were actually nodding their head in approval at a once seemingly awful idea. Strowman vs Deadman. Instead, Strowman has now lost to Reigns at Fastlane - and looks set to continue that programme after Wrestlemania - and was oddly eliminated early during the Battle Royal. Had he won the Battle Royal then he could heave easily been positioned as a challenger to Reigns and Lesnar who will undoubtedly be the cornerstones of the Raw roster throughout the next 12 months. Instead, he’s likely to lose to Reigns again and begin a Rusev like descent back down the card. 

WWE was right to move the IC Title match.

The crowd was nowhere near invested in this match. Corbin is a fledgling heel and to me needs to go over somebody whose matches you can invest in. Ambrose is not that person. The last match I cared about involving him had more to do with the people that lost than the fact Ambrose won - ensuring he was WWE Champion going into the draft. 

Goldberg vs Lesnar - The Main Event

Based on crowd interaction and involvement perhaps Lesnar winning should have been on last. I fully understand why it was not, as with the ending it was/is quite clear that ‘Taker is now a retired man. However their match was awful and watching he and Reigns go at it was painful. Say what you will about part timers, each with only 2 moves in their arsenal, going at it - the crowd was in for that.

Hardyz to unify

“I would say probably the first two people we would mark for deletion would be The Usos, who have gold that we would like to procure and also The Club, who have gold that we would like to procure.”

Half of that is complete after a WONDERFUL moment at Wrestlemania. 

Chants of “Miz is awesome” seemed to genuinely touch the A-lister. He’s superb at what he does.  

Surprised Samoa Joe didn’t come out during the Rollins/HHH bout. A Joe/Rollins programme going forward surely - with maybe a little Balor?

Orton/Wyatt disappointing

After the excellent storytelling between Orton and Wyatt, it culminated in a standard match with Wyatt outwitted by an RK-Outta nowhere. This is Wyatt’s main roster run in a nutshell. Talk big, act big but then fall at the meaningful point. Is it only Ambrose he’s successfully defeated over the course of a programme? It would have been so easy, what with the maggot pictures etc, to position Bray as a master at mindgames. After he was booked so strongly at Elimination Chamber too, its disappointing to see this match end in the way it did.

So, we’re two game weeks into the new Premier League season and already I’ve found the standard of refereeing to be appalling. This isn’t about the penalty decisions during the Man City vs Stoke game - these are new rules and will take time for the officials to develop a consistent approach. This is about the referees missing blatant opportunities to send players off. 

Howard Webb tried this approach during the 2010 World Cup final, not sending off Nigel de Jong for an obscene challenge on Xabi Alonso. I understood that approach at the time - it’s better for the game isn’t it if all 11 remain on the field? Well, perhaps not. At the end of the day should you make a tackle like that then you deserve the consequences and for the fans, well there’s excitement and interest in the moment and beyond so the need for 11 men is diminished. During that game the repetitive fouls took their toll and eventually Heitinga was dismissed. Throughout the game Webb refused to show yellow cards for a series of bookable offences. 

Fast forward to 2016 and referees are taking a similar approach. On the opening weekend, Diego Costa, having already been booked, made a nasty challenge on West Ham goalkeeper Adrian yet referee Anthony Taylor practically ignored the tackle and certainly had no inclination to show a yellow card. Yesterday Costa was fortunate again. Also on a yellow, he dived on the edge of the Watford penalty area. The ref, Jonathan Moss, ruled no foul so surely it was simulation and therefore a yellow card? 

In Leicester’s game Francis Coquelin made two dodgy challenges and yet received a yellow for only one. Yes, these decisions change games but it isn’t always a negative impact left on the game. Costa, after being fortunate to escape punishment for his foul on Adrian then scored the winner and he did exactly the same against Watford. The ref’s decision to keep 11 on the field cost both West Ham and Watford a point.

Daniel Bryan’s journey now the blue print for building the next top faces. Yes the story worked perfectly for Bryan, just look at his size - it was always going to. For Reigns surely there could be another way. If only WWE had credible heels.

I can't see Ambrose winning gold at TLC or at any time vs Kevin Owens. Ambrose has been used as a great stepping stone for Wyatt, Rollins and now Reigns. It's disappointing because the fact he's so over is probably the reason he's being fed all these losses. Like Ziggler, whatever WWE does with him he still gets a massive cheer from the crowd. I'd love to see him as a credible champion in the future but loss after loss in feud after feud will do nothing to make that happen

Seth Rollins Injury Could Be Blessing In Disguise

Seth Rollins injury should have opened the eyes of many within WWE. Without him the roster is without a top heel, highlighting the lack of top tier stars. The depth of talent is probably the greatest it’s ever been within WWE yet the company has allowed its midcard to swell without propelling a lot of its talent into the top tier of the card. Hopefully, this will now change. 

I read that Cena vs Taker is scheduled for Wrestlemania. Yes, this is a marquee match between two stellar stars who are top drawer. However, given the current situation surely they could both be used to put over talent and propel at least two to another level?

The Undertaker is the simpler one. Survivor Series is being themed around him and he’s currently in a programme with the Wyatt Family. Have Taker or his team win at Survivor Series but then have the programme continue through to Wrestlemania. Wyatt vs Taker has been done before but with this encounter the outcome could be different. Wyatt has come up short in every meaningful feud with the exception of Dean Ambrose. If he’s to be a credible and feared heel within the company then taking on and defeating Taker will earn him that recognition. 

For Cena the formula is simple but who he puts over isn’t as such. His US Open Challenge was the best thing about the product for a long time during this year and the way he lost it, in a flat match vs an established returnee, was perhaps not the best move. Cena is slated, from what I read, to return and do battle against Del Rio. Have him win the title back and restart his open challenges. Come Wrestlemania someone can go over. Rusev has been ruined since he took consecutive losses and many within the WWE Universe were of the opinion that Owens should have gone over more than once against Cena during the summer. Personally, I’d like to see Cesaro be the one to challenge and defeat him for the title. 

I read everywhere that Reigns was already due to go over Rollins at Survivor Series but to me that doesn’t ring true. If Reigns is destined to be the face of the company then they would give him a steeper climb and a more meaningful chase before putting the belt on him. Think Bryan or Stone Cold and what they had to endure before actually winning their first WWE title. For Reigns to get the biggest rub he should have been thwarted by Rollins right up until Wrestlemania. Whether that meant defeating Rollins or going over Lesnar, as was the original plan, having him win on the grandest stage of them all would have given him the biggest rub and greatest chance of success going forward.
