i've heard multiple times that virgil was not supposed to be a main character and only became one because of his popularity and i just like?? don't believe that??? i can't find a source for it and can't remember where i first heard that so i'm going to assume it's misinformation and even if thomas has said that he must be lying

you mean to tell me that they created an all-black-wearing edgy emo character and he wasn't going to be a main character??? who was very clearly made to be a parallel and foil to roman?? and they were very clearly pushing for them to be shipped together?? like the cast at the time was literally incomplete without virgil since logan and patton were meant to be a duo and that left with roman with no one, he needed someone just as extra as him and someone who would take a somewhat of an antagonistic role since that was also missing. i just don't buy it

laughing at the entire conceit of live action httyd being "animation is for babies so we HAVE to remake this shot-for-shot in live action" but also they need to sell a new wave of plushies at universal studios orlando so toothless still looks like a fucking cartoon character

something that’s interesting to compare is how the live action is reusing designs and shots from the animated films with the fact that the animated films are adaptations themselves.

Toothless didn’t look like that in the book. Toothless could talk. The character relationships were different. Some book characters didn’t make it in, and were replaced by movie versions.

But what’s important about that is they made all those changes on purpose. They made changes because they were adapting a book into an animated feature film. Their choices were all made to enhance the stakes and storytelling, and they knew that being 100% faithful to the source material wasn’t going to use the medium to its fullest potential. Hell, even the flight scenes were directed in a way to take advantage of the new 3D technology.

So it’s interesting to see how this live action remake just doesn’t make those same considerations. It feels like they were more worried about people getting mad about toothless’ design (and buying less plushies) than doing an entirely new take on the franchise in order to uplift the strengths of live action filmmaking.
