let's say that the phrase "military target" was unambiguous, with precise boundaries and clear distinctions (it is not). let's say that the west, in this latest iteration of imperial wars of aggression, targeted only those locations in iran that met this fantastical term (it never would). what we're left with, still, is bombings and missile strikes and the threat of further violence all in service of imperialist consolidation of power within the region. which is to say: what difference does it make? why are we so hung up on the "legitimacy" of targets in an illegitimate war? would you be so relieved to find out that the only destruction befell some hypothetical isolated IRGC base in the middle of the desert, where no "women and children" are around to rhetorically incite your indignation? or, irrespective of what you think of the IRI, would you not still consider this a great injustice against a people's right to self-determination? do you feel vindicated when someone snatches away your claim to settling the score yourself, or do you feel deprived, wronged, condescended to? the west never abides by the terms it sets, the "rules of engagement" are rules of convenience, but let's not act precious about the notion of war as an arena of rules in the first place. to do so is to accept that there is something permissible about what is going on to begin with.
