Can we get a scar rendering tutorial? If you wouldn't mind.
Hi! I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond to this! 😣
To be completely honest, for Mortarion's piece, I just kinda winged it using this image as reference (by Gina Nelson from an old 3D Total tutorial, mainly the third example):
But I had a thought that it could be good to have a proper process/study of it, so here's a try!
First thing to note is that there are many kinds of scars - some are raised over the skin (like the reference above), and others are deeper. It also depends on what made the scar in the first place (clean or jagged cut, puncture, burns, etc.). So it's always good to have a thought of how that scar came to be, and look for some reference, if you're comfortable with it.
The other thing is that scars might be more or less visible depending on the character's skin tone. If the scar is lighter than the skin, it can be very hard to see it on pale characters, so it's good to add a bit of color variation to them as well.
For Mortarion, I mostly did some smaller raised ones (cuts and burns), as well as some bigger, deeper ones.
For the first kind, I used a slightly darker, softer pinkish 'base' over his skin tone (because I painted him extremely pale, so I also had to add some warmth for them to show up), with a sharper shape on top. Here's a rough breakdown of the method I used:
For some of the larger, deeper scars on his body, I use a similar logic but try to give them some extra volume, like a piece of him is actually missing. This means painting volume according to your light source, a bit like this:
I always end up rendering a bit more on top once these colors and structure are set as well, but that's the general gist of it!
Also, always remember that a scar is sitting on top of a volume, so it has to follow the form of the body (wrapping around an arm or a muscle, following bone structure, etc.)!
I can't remember the last time I made a tutorial, but I hope this helps a bit! 💚
