Project Proposal
My concern for the plight of honeybees has inspired me to dream up an artistic process that would create awareness about the importance of bees and bee pollination. The bee species is crucial for the environment because of the role it plays in pollinating a third of the plants in the United States and over fifty different crops, resulting in the reproduction of offspring that are genetically diverse. Through collaboration with environmental scientists, artists and musicians, I would like to create a model for and conduct honeybee educational workshops featuring the process and creation of three large bee sculptures to be installed in key locations in San Diego.
The process involves making large-scale plasticina sculptures to be cast into rubber molds to create a series of large-scale bee shapes. The casting method uses a mixture of wild bird food combined with an organic binder. This piece is ephemeral in nature by the fact that once the piece is installed birds will begin to eat and diminish the bee shape to show the decline and disappearance of this important species.
