"Even before Laurent had hit the ground, the man had drawn his sword. Damen was too far away. He was too far to get between the man and Laurent, he knew that, even as he drew his sword—even as he wheeled his horse, felt the powerful bunch of the animal beneath him. There was only one thing he could do." -Prince's Gambit by C.S.Pacat

ah yes, Galavant, the musical comedy fantasy show with bangers such as
"Local King Realises He Has Zero Useful Skills"
"Gay Bar Anthem About Undressing An Oblivious Straight Guy"
"The Ruling Class Sucks, How About We Poison All Of Them"
"The Most Scathing Critique Of Representative Democracy You Will Ever Come Across"
"Yelling About How You're Going To Very Sneakily Kill Your Brother"
"Pirate Shanty: Run Aground Edition"
"Disney Princess Love Interest Duet Except The Lyrics Are About How You Barely Tolerate Each Other" (twice)
and of course
"A New Season AKA Suck It Cancellation Bear" which is the actual real title of that song and cannot be improved upon through humorous description
also have I mentioned that all of these are composed by actual real Disney composer Alan Menken, of Little Shop of Horrors, Tangled, and basically the entire Disney Renaissance fame, and wow do they sound like it
Let's make a deal (ft Bill playing with Ford's feelings)
y’all just— thinking about how excited Stanley must have been to host the twins— Alex says he smokes cigars but he doesn’t smoke once in the show— has a beer gut but he only drinks sodas in front of the kids— doesn’t swear when they’re around which must have taken INCREDIBLE effort— Stanley Pines, known crook, buying pancake mix at the supermarket and many bottles of syrup— learning to cook basic healthy meals and burning so many of them before he gets it right— buying new sheets, new mattresses— avoiding bunk beds because it reminds him of Ford— looking at the attic room he made wondering “is this enough will they like me”— trying to act aloof at the bus stop so he doesn’t betray the fact that he was there hours early— watching them goof around and thinking of New Jersey beaches— then the first night they’re there, he watches them debate running away and only stay because Mabel shook a magic 8 ball. That must have kept him awake all night.
Honestly, the fact that terry Pratchett has experience around nuclear power makes so much sense once you realize what magic is standing as a metaphor for in the discworld. Like, look at this fucking quote from going postal:
"That's why [magic] was left to wizards, who knew how to handle it safely. Not doing any magic at all was the chief task of wizards—not "not doing magic" because they couldn't do magic, but not doing magic when they could do and didn't. Any ignorant fool can fail to turn someone else into a frog. You have to be clever to refrain from doing it when you knew how easy it was. There were places in the world commemorating those times when wizards hadn't been quite as clever as that, and on many of them the grass would never grow again."
Like... It feels incredibly obvious what he's talking about once you know the context.
Literally just an excuse to draw ostrichhowrse
the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

Why Background Characters are the best
Things have changed.
“I fell for it. I used up all our time.” - Sokka
Bonus:
I love the fact that Zuko confronts Ozai basically as the Blue Spirit - but the mask is off.
The first time he really actively went against Fire Nation interests was in The Blue Spirit. Then he needed a mask, an alter ago - some way to dissociate himself from what he was doing (which was at the time in such great conflict with everything he understood loyalty to the Fire Nation to be).
But in The Day of the Black Sun, he has gone through the entire learning curve - he understands that his destiny is not controlled by his father who wronged him, that standing up and saying that the Fire Nation is on the wrong side of history does not make him to be a traitor, that helping the Avatar is actually how he can be loyal to his country.
Can we please just acknowledge the sheer absurdity the “Kuzon’s Parents” disguise scene:
Deadass Katara just stuffed her shirt with melons, did nothing else to even pretend that she was older than 14, Sokka put on what was probably an incredibly fake-looking beard and pulled the most shakespearean accent he could muster.
They just saunter on in with their son who looks literally nothing like either of them, but also almost the exact same age. The headmaster probably just thinks “Fuck it. Okay. Benefit of the doubt. I’m not particularly well-versed in the ethnicities of the colonies maybe this is just normal. Adoption maybe? Good skin care?”
And then when he asks their names, Sokka just comes out guns blazing with surnames- which is implied (but not confirmed) to be sort of nobility status. And not only is their cover story that they have surnames in the first place, but that their name is Fire. Wang Fire and Sapphire Fire.
Can you imagine just being a Canadian school principal meeting a student’s parents for the first time and you just see these rogue teenagers showing up saying “Hello yes my name is Sir Jason Toronto and this is my wife Poutine.”
The Blue Spirit putting out firebending with a bucket of water is the absolute funniest thing ever done in avatar combat. It just is.
