A tlok hill I'll die on is that the Earth Queen and Su have like. Massive Beef. Like the only reason they haven't done anything drastic to one another is because, on Suyin's side, regicide is frowned upon and, on the Queen's side, it would be frowned upon if she just wiped out the daughter of a national war hero and leader of one of rhe wealthier city states in the country.

So they're forced to be cordial to each other in public as monarch and vassal. But they are constantly fucking with each other behind the scenes. They're both sending secret agents to spy on one another and playing whack-a-mole with the spies the other's sent to them. Su commits tax evasion purely to spite the Earth Queen. The Dai Li are trying really really hard to master metalbending to be on par with Zaofu's guards. For... reasons.

Also yeah, i self reported but i mentioned that i kinda like her a bit more now than before so in a way i was sorta agreeing. Sorry if it came out aggresive.

It didn't come out as aggressive, just that "well I haven't really changed my opinion about any of her traits but I hate her a little less💕" is an incredibly weird thing to announce about yourself in a post that alludes to the fact that misogyny plays a role in Korra hate.

I also just have a really low tolerance for people who don't like Korra at this point. I'm sorry but I don't respect "she's boring" or "she's annoying" as valid critiques on Korra or reasons to dislike her anymore. Skill issue. Do better. Get good, even.

The Earth Queen in tlok is Evil but it does amuse me that as part of her Evil Characterisation they made her allergic to animals. Like not liking animals is an established way to hint at someone being mean or shady (even if it's a bit silly). But giving her a very valid reason to avoid animals, like an allergy is like The Reason to not want to have animals around you.

One of the dumbest, most absurd things about Avatar is that they still kept the Dai Li even around after they conspired with Long Feng, did a coup, sided with Azula and then handed the whole Kingdom over to the Fire Nation effectively winning them the war in a single stroke. Tragically it being dumb and absurd does not by any stretch make it unrealistic.

I don't really trust the Avatar fandom's sense of powerscaling because why do I consistently see Zaheer being presented as this super powerful airbender on par with Tenzin or even Aang like who do you guys think he is?

Despite Shady Shin being a douchebag (Shin group beating starts in 15 minutes), I found the detail of him teaching Bolin pai-sho kinda sweet. Do you think after Bolin got the rules, did he usually won? Anything else to say on their relationship?

Genuinely the realtionship between the boys and the Triple Threats is so interesting to me. Because Bolin has very clearly normalised the horrible conditions he'd been growing up in, and the violence enacted around and towards him and Mako (Bolin really is the embodiment of the 'telling what you think is a funny anecdote while absolutely horrifying the people you're talking to' canon event). Mako, on the other hand, has a much more 'sober' outlook on the Triads. He knows they triads are a bad environment, even though he was willing to work with them in order to keep himself and Bo fed. It does seem that some of the Triad Members do have some fondness for the boys, like Two Toed Ping.

[Tbh Ping seeming genuinely proud and happy that the boys got out of the organised crime and are living much safer and happier lives does bad things to my fragile mental state.]

I think their relationship with Shady Shin gets under my skin the most is because he seemed to be their 'handler' of sorts, as he was the one who brought them into the fold andwas delegating jobs to them.

Shady Shin: And speaking of hustling, you two need to hit the bricks and collect enough bets to make this little investment pay off. 'Cause if you don't, you're gonna be right back in the dumpster where I found ya. Mako : [To Bolin.] Don't worry, bro. We'll do fine. [Leaves with Bolin.] Shady Shin: Seeing those young crooks really gives me hope for the future. [Smiles wickedly.]

What fucks with me is how Shady Shin seems to know the brothers well enough to try and manipulate them.

Shady Shin: [Laughing.] Sorry bum, but at least one of these kids is too smart to end up like you, right Mako?

[..]

Shady Shin: Don't go soft on me, Mako. Remember, it's up to you to take care of your little brother. Use your head, make the smart play.

Which works in Bolin's case during the Revelation.

Bolin: [Frontal shot; unsure.] Uh, I don't know, Shin. Mako told me to stay away from the Triple Threats. Shady Shin: [Frontal shot; mildly irritably.] Pfuh, your brother ain't the boss of you. [Slyly.] It's just a little security work. Nothin' crooked.

I also obviously don't like how he attacked the boys and chased them through the arena when he realised Bolin had convinced Toza not to throw the match.

Like you can't do that sir those are babies. Also when Toza steps in to defend them and Shin tries to get the brothers to come back to the hideout. Like I would genuinely be terrified for them if they went back with him. He's like the textbook definition of the opposite of a Safe Adult.

Shady Shin seems to earn a lot of money by gambling in some way or another. In Republic City Hustle, he's fixing a match and then sending the bending bros to collect a lot of bets and in Turf Wars, we see him playing cards.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is what he did in the triads after he lost his bending and the reason he seemed to maintain his status there. I also wouldn't be surprised if the way he taught Bolin to play Pai-Sho, aka, fast paced and reckless, was primed for gambling too. So I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that Shin was priming Bolin to also gamble and perhaps cheat.

Which wouldn't be too far out for Bolin, since he and Mako were already hustling people through elaborate little acts, and even as a 17 year old, Bolin still, to some extent, saw them as fun games. Because, once again, he has a very normalised view on crimes and hustling. So gambling and scamming people through board and card games wouldn't be too far out his wheelhouse.

[Scamming ppl is his enrichment actually he should be allowed to do it more. Look at how excited he was to do it]

Also I absolutely think Bolin learnt something from Shady Shin's potential gambling lessons because in Republic City Hustle, after convincing Toza to not throw the match, he bet everything he and Mako had on Toza winning. Knowing that Shady Shin and the Triple Threats had bet a shitton of money against Toza because they thought he was going to throw the match.

Bolin: Oh, I have lots of money coming. I bet everything we had on the Boar-q-pines. Mako: What?! But you knew the fight was fixed. Bolin: What can I say? [Looks toward Toza.] I had a good feeling.

He's actually insane and we need to talk about it more.

AU where they both stayed with the Triple Threat Triad >:)

Idk what would have had to happen for their characters to take this route, but this was really fun practice. Their proportions are a little off... Mako should either be taller with a smaller head, or Bolin should be shorter with a bigger head, but I'm not getting paid for this so I'm leaving it as is, lol.
