How come Wu's family isn't ever mentioned? Besides the Earth Queen, his family isn't really mentioned and to even become Earth King, his parents, grandparents, and his great aunt had to pass. Not to mention the possibility of siblings and cousins and great cousins
This is such a great question and there just isn't a good answer.
As far as I know, other than Hou-Ting, Wu's family is NEVER mentioned, not parents, siblings, other aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. The family tree, at a minimum, would need to contain Wu's parent and grandparent (the grandparent being Hou-Ting's sibling, since she is Wu's great-aunt.) and presumably their spouses, though we don't know if marriage is required or even common for an earth royal.
But, Wu is the last in line for the throne- at least we can be pretty certain- since he was the next in line and he is in the process of abolishing the monarchy with no other royals appearing in opposition. So we can make a pretty educated guess that all other members of the royal family are dead. Yikes. How is Wu's storyline not more angsty????
So if his parents and grandparents are dead, when and how did they die? There's only a couple of options- Either they died before Zaheer's assassination of Hou-Ting, or during. During seems a little unlikely because it's not mentioned during the 3rd season at all.
So the possibility is that they died before Zaheer's assassination. But how long before? If it was a long time before, that would mean that Hou-Ting raised Wu (though if she were his guardian, she certainly outsourced the real work or raising a child to others)- which isn't much of a stretch when you notice a scene in the comics where Wu is confronted with a vision of her (I'll be discussing it at length in my series of post on Wuko in the comics). In short, he acts pretty fearful of her and she's pretty mean to him which has some unpleasant implications that maybe she had some abusive behaviors toward him at some point in his life-maybe as a guardian, but at the very least as a relative that he spent some amount of time around growing up.
We do know based on some DVD commentary that apparently Wu was not supposed to be in the Earth Kingdom during the assassination. He was attending University in Republic City. So it's still possible that his parents or grandparents were alive and did get killed at some point in the assassination and Wu's ascension to the throne was unexpected, which would also make sense considering how ill-prepared he was for ruling- you'd think if he was next in line, Hou-Ting would have done more to groom him to rule to her liking. But maybe that was the point of him to republic city to go to school?
Basically. We don't know anything, and we don't know why we don't know. The royal family tree is never discussed beyond the three monarchs we've seen so far, and we are left to draw our own conclusions and make up our own headcanons. So I say, this is completely up to you, the fans. What do you think makes the most sense, or is the most interesting? What do you think happened to the rest of the royal family? Because, until more canon content is released, we have nothing to go by and your guess is as good as mine!
