I am mixed. I am White and Chinese.
Growing up, I refused to believed that I was half Chinese.I would mark white as my ethnicity in standardized tests. When I was little, I saw myself as white and only white.I remember my mom telling me I was half- Asian, and me making silly excuses for why I was completely white.
I remember getting offended by white girl and Asian jokes. Now, as people are starting to make fun of white people more and more, I see myself as Asian. People still ask me if I can read and write in Chinese, or if I can speak any Chinese. People ask me if I was born in China almost every day. I am offended when people think itâs cool to make fun of a country whoâs far ahead of there own country. I hate it when people say âChing Chong Changâ as if there were speaking Chinese
Not once have I saw myself as mixed. I have never been able to accept all of myself, and tumblr letting everyone have a voice expect for white people has not helped at all.
Being mixed sucks. I am simultaneously offended by two types of racist jokes while not getting to be offended by them. I canât be offended by Asian jokes, because I am not Asian. I canât be offended by white girl jokes because I am not white.
That is true. I am not Asian. I am not white. I am mixed.
Please never think that you only be one of your races. Please remind yourself that are not one race. Please speak out if you are offended by a racist joke, even if you are not fully that race.
