“huh. is that- supposed to be making that noise?” it wasn’t nineteen eighteen anymore, and steve was adjusting about as well as someone could - but that didn’t mean that he knew EVERYTHING. 

Diana hadn’t recognized the familiarity in the other’s voice when he spoke, assuming he was referring to the cell phone going off in her hand as she attempted to buy today’s newspaper. The call would’ve most likely been Donna or Cassie, even Bruce, though she silenced the device before slipping it back into her pocket. “I’m sorry about that,” dark hues shot over her shoulder to give the stranger an apologetic smile before she realized the voice was coming from anything but a stranger. The familiar blue eyes she’s met with has the Amazon frozen in her place, her mind immediately searching for a reason that seeing Steve once again is possible. A part of her figures this could be one of his relatives - one with damn good genes. The Princess is rendered speechless, eyes fixated on the all too familiar features. “Are you... from around here?”

Bruce makes a small sound of agreement in the back of his throat, glancing up at Diana. “I know. Somehow I don’t think they tested whatever the hell this is on rats.” It’s a bone-chilling thought, and images of Duke pinned to laboratory tables spring up in Bruce’s mind. He neatly sweeps them to the side, refocusing on Diana’s words.

It’s good that they’re getting to this early. Once the drug enters medical facilities, becomes publicly and institutionally recognized, it will be a hell of a lot harder to stop. “Tracking and taking down the shipments is a good start.” Eventually Bruce, Diana, and the rest of the league will have to strike right at the source - go after the scientist who’s manufacturing the hope serum and neutralize the threat. That, however, is a more elaborate plan for a different day. Their top priority now is to stop the drug from wreaking havoc on people vulnerable or desperate enough to take it. “I need a sample of it, we can’t start any kind of covert public awareness initiative without knowing exactly what it does. Do we have any leads on shipments in the city or surrounding area?”

Though the Amazon was fully capable of executing a small investigation into the Hope serum on her own, she was well aware that her and Bruce worked much better as a team. Even in times she felt confident in her research, she found herself turning to the other for his input, knowing that where she saw several outcomes, Bruce could most likely think up a couple dozen more. He agrees with her point of tracking down the shipments, not wanting this stuff moving around the city in bulk any longer. Mass production leads to mass consumption and there’s no telling who was actively seeking the narcotic out - or who was sought out against their will to take it. 

Diana nods when he asks about leads, once again reaching over his shoulder to flip through the few documents she was able to pull together about the topic. The last paper in the pile wasn’t anything fancy but what seemed to be an invoice at a local docking facility with units labeled HOPE coming and going in large quantities within the last two weeks. “I’m not sure if this is their one and only place of pick-up, however it would make sense if that was the truth. These shipments are reading by the palette full, which could easily carry up to forty crates of the Hope serum each.” Her finger glides along the vague details listed of the shipments before she’s reaching into her pocket, pulling out a vial of their topic at hand. She presents it to him, offering it out for him to examine. “I didn’t want to make any moves until we conferred, but I did manage to talk my way into getting something for us to go off of.”

Bruce feels a dim flicker of amusement at Diana’s wry response, though it’s quickly tempered by the focused rhythm of her voice and walk. He straightens his posture minutely as she comes up behind him. “No,” he murmurs, eyes narrowing as he peruses the open article. With each successive word his countenance darkens, expression creasing with cynicism. 

After skimming the article in full, Bruce closes the file and sits back in his chair. “In 1932 the U.S. Public Health Service injected two hundred and one previously healthy men with syphilis. The study went on for forty years. They were never given the cure, they were never even told they had the disease - only that they were being treated for ‘bad blood’.” Bruce looks up at Diana, mouth flattened into a grim line. As much as the world liked to believe it progressed, structures of inequality simply shifted and adapted, the core injustice holding steady all the while. “They preyed on a vulnerable population. Impoverished Black share-croppers in Alabama. This,” Bruce holds up the the file, disdain filtering into his voice despite his best efforts to keep it at bay, “is not hope. This is a government-sponsored eugenics experiment. Do we know anyone who’s taken it?”

If anyone is aware of just how ugly mankind could be - it was Diana. She had been around long enough to see it prey on its own people for their own gain, if any gain at all. She’s backing herself up enough so that she could lean against the edge of the desk, getting a better look at her colleague. “I think you’re right. Something labeled with hope, promising to take away the things that ultimately put a target on your back is just a ruse to bring forth those who think they need it. Who knows what they’re doing to anyone seeking it out. They could be experimenting on them, or worse..—” the Amazon stops herself, gaze falling to the ground. 

“Not that I’ve seen. So far, all we know is that it’s something being sold, traded and ordered in bulk. No cases have turned up in any medical facility about symptoms, or overdose.” Yet. “Then again, there’s no information on any negative effects, so it looks like our first course of action is to track down shipments of any size moving through the city.” Her gaze falls over her shoulder, eyeing the detective. “What do you think?”

Bruce leaned back in his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose, struck with a sharp longing for a thermos filled with something a little stronger than green tea. He had been poring over the designs of the sentinels for weeks, trying, largely in vain, to reverse manufacture Trask’s ‘Mutant Detection Device’. If he could assemble some piece of technology to scramble the signal or override each machine’s consciousness – well. It might not make for any long term solutions as the problem they were facing was on a much more ingrained systemic level, but it could mitigate some of the day to day dangers in Gifted individual’s attempts to evade capture. Genosha might be something of a haven for now, but if Bruce knew anything about metahumans, it was that they weren’t especially inclined to stay in one place for long.

He straightened his posture and cinched his burgeoning frustration with one, habitual stroke. There was nothing more to be done tonight, not when he was so restless. Besides, based on the telltale prickle at the back of his neck, the sliver of a shadow in his periphery, and the near imperceptible inhale somewhere behind him, he appeared to have company.

“You’re breathing very loud,” he intoned. Bruce took a sip of cold tea with pointed nonchalance. It was uniquely terrible. Alfred would pay for his crimes, and justice would be swift.

Upon the news breaking about the “Hope serum”, the Amazons immediate instinct was to bring the information to Bruce. If anyone could help her form a plan for going forward, it’d be the Bat himself. While the name the narcotic was dubbed could be seen as just that, hopeful, it appears that those ranting and raving about it refuse to see the bigger picture. Their mission to the seventies was to stop the hatred and potential genocide of mutantkind — to wipe the slate clean and show the world that mutants and metas could live among humans peacefully and without need for such things like accords or cures. 

She’s leaning against the door frame as he speaks, eyes rolling back at his words. “Ha ha,” the words are delivered dryly before she’s making her way through the room, a file tucked beneath her arm before being presented on the desk before him. Diana reaches over his shoulder to open the file to the first page, showing just one of the several different pieces of information she was able to gather on the Hope serum. The headline reads, HOPE SERUM CREATES JUST THAT FOR MUTANTS AND META’S ALIKE.  “Have you seen this?”
