so, i didn’t wanna talk about something i thought was totally obvious, but due to recent “”news”” i feel like some of y’all need to hear it,,
gaslighting in the rwby fandom isn’t a new concept. it’s not a new concept to fandom in general, but it’s been very apparent in this one for YEARS. this is Not The First Time something like this has happened and i’m getting real sick of it lmao
for those who haven’t heard: some rando, apparently OUTSIDE the rwby fandom, made a fake announcement about a qrow x blake appreciation blog or something. obviously, people reacted poorly, which ended with the op FAKING a suicide note. and, as a result, everyone went nuts and started arguing back and forth with each other about what was right and wrong. this was 100% intentional.
i’m VERY MUCH against pedophilic ships like that, and i don’t think it’s wrong for anyone to speak up about it and criticize the people who defend it, but that’s not the point of this post. the point is that THIS SHIT HAPPENS CONSTANTLY, and i’m seriously going to explode if we have another flame war every single time it does.
first of all: i don’t BLAME anyone for falling for it, i don’t think anyone’s stupid for taking a topic like that seriously. but i DO think it’s stupid to react to it the way people did. even if it WASN’T FAKE, even if someone’d actually died, why waste your energy on yelling “my ship is good/your ship is bad”? why use an alleged suicide to back up WHICHEVER side of fictional internet drama you’re on??? you can do that as much as you want at literally any other time, but under the circumstances of irl death, you just don’t.
secondly, and finally: be more wary in these situations. like i said, this ISN’T the first time someone’s lied for the sole sake of watching drama unfold! if you see anything that just SCREAMS “perfect recipe for heated fandom discourse”, pleaaaaase step back for 1 second and consider that it MIGHT be totally on purpose.
LONG STORY SHORT; the person behind this is the ONLY REAL PERSON TO BLAME, and that’s exactly why arguing about it any further is pointless. it’s what they WANT you to do.
