you know, it’s been a really long time since i’ve been active on this acc because i started to lose interest in the 100 around season 6. but i have still been watching. and i really need to talk about the completely unacceptable, ableist and dangerous frame of thinking that led to the madi/clarke/octavia scene this week (7x15). @the100writers

it is completely inappropriate, no matter the “plot” to have a character - within minutes of learning of the situation - make the decision to murder another character (THEIR CHILD) because they are disabled. because they are nonverbal and paralyzed. madi was clearly able to still think, feel, hear, and see. and somehow killing her was the only option? in terms of the plot, the medical science in bardo is incredibly advanced - could have helped her. the mind drives which have been around since SEASON 3 - could have helped her. the writers made the decision to make madi disabled - not brain dead! brain dead means your involuntary, unconscious control of your body is there (still able to breathe, and keep your heart beating) but no conscious activity (no hearing, vision, thought, emotion). this is not madi’s situation! madi’s brain and consciousness is alive! and to have two characters decide to kill her, without her consent is HORRIFYING. let alone her MOTHER. finally, the fact that they abandoned her alone, and vulnerable in that room for sheidheda or any of the disciples to come and kill her is horrifying. and now madi is stuck there knowing that when clarke and octavia get back they’re still going to kill her! it is so completely fucked up i can’t even believe this made it to the screen.

this is also very personal for me. last summer a friend of mine was hit by a drunk driver in a hit and run. she was in a coma for several months, and thankfully, blessedly woke up earlier this year. my friend is nonverbal and paralyzed. in a extremely similar situation to madi. she cannot speak or move, but she can see and hear everything around her. she can think and feel. she is absolutely worthy of her life, and no one close to her would ever even think that she doesn’t deserve to live and should be “put out of her suffering”. even writing this makes me feel sick. and like madi, sometimes my friend gets overwhelmed with her disability, and she too will cry. when i saw madi’s tears, it jolted me to my core. just like my friend, individuals with disabilities are still capable of every human emotion and thought. they deserve the right to live. disability is not a death sentence.

the rationale that a person with a disability’s quality of life will be so low it’s not even worth keeping them alive is DANGEROUS. it is the reason why individuals with disabilities are abused, neglected and murdered by people that are supposed to be their caretakers. it is completely irresponsible and unacceptable for a major network show to encourage this kind of mentality. people with disabilities deserve the respect and dignity to live their lives and make their own choices. it is not another person’s right to assume and make the decision that an individual with a disability’s quality of life is not worth living. that is completely up to the individual themselves. i am truly dumbfounded that in 2020 this mentality is being broadcast with zero discussion of why it is fundamentally wrong. i hope this scene becomes viral and the show is forced to reckon with this horrifying display. i can’t believe this is the same show that handled raven’s disability with such care (at least in the earlier seasons).

this is WRONG. and it needs to be talked about. shame on the writers for so casually displaying a horrifying, disgusting, ableist treatment of a character, especially a child.
