How characters from Diabolik Lovers would be toxic in a relationship?

Note: I am making a part 2 for the toxic characters, but because I’m putting most of the Diabolik characters. I made it a separate post. Also mentions of NSFW and direct abuse!

From a young age, his mother pressured and abused him, so Ayato doesn’t know how to love properly, meaning he’ll act cold and cruel to you. He has a superior complex and is an attention seeker, looking down on you as he bullies and teases you. Ayato expects you to praise him and to see him as yours truly. He gets jealous easily when you spend time with his brothers or let them have a taste of your blood. Expects you to do his bidding and spend time with him whenever he asks. Saying no will cause him to lash out on you.

He turns brides into wax dolls and talks to them. Any wrong move could lead into your demise. No one is more paranoid than Kanato. He assumes a relationship between you and his brothers when they talk to you or how you don’t love him anymore just because you don’t greet him. His mother never paid much attention to him when he was young unless she used his voice. He’s touch starved, but he hates being touched and touching him without his permission will cause him to lash out in anger. His outbursts are the worst thing in the relationship as they’re sadistic and violent.

He’s very handsome and seems sweet to which he uses his appearance for advantage. Kou is a sadist; he enjoys seeing you in pain; physically and mentally. He always expects something in exchange, even when he knows you’re honest. The biggest problem with Kou is his personality switch, he’s a ticking bomb. One wrong move and Kou can change from being sweet and cheerful into this vicious person who no matter how much you beg for forgiveness will cause you harm.

It’s easy for us to assume Yumi as a rebellious soft teddy bear, but it’s not anything like that. His parents abused him, then got burned alive, and Yuma joined a gang, living on the streets. Because of this, Yuma is sadistic and very easy to anger, he’s nowhere soft. With Yuma, you have to be careful with your words and actions otherwise you’ll know the consequences from the hard way. He can go into a rampage and might kill you in an accident. Yuma is also a pervert, it’s a terrible idea to stay alone in a room with him.

He confuses love with lust because his mother sexually abused him. Laito cares about sex more than any aspects in a relationship. Telling him you’re tired or not feeling the mood will not stop Laito and he will not need consent to do what he does. In bed, he will experiment with many positions and kinks. There is no such thing as a safe word. Just because Laito is cheerful and jokes around doesn’t mean there’s not a hidden side to him. Without you knowing, he’s clever and charming, able to manipulate you in any way he wants to.

In the Sakamaki family, Subaru is the best one to date (which says something). Although he may control himself around you, it still doesn’t change the fact that he’s violent and if you provoke him enough, Subaru might lash out on you. The many walls he punched warn you about angering him. Subaru is suicidal, a loner, and is very tempered, all combinations that make it hard to be with him. He has emotional baggage, lots of it. His own mother called him filth, making him distrust those around him, especially women.

He burned down an entire village just to kill his brother’s best friend out of jealousy. Reiji appears to be polite and mannered, but he’s ignorant, prideful and a sadist. Reiji demands perfection, he observes every act and word, wanting you to be the perfect lady/gentleman. Acting unmannered, talking or glancing at Shu, even showing too much emotion will make him punish you. Reiji has a list of rules he expects you to follow and memorize it. Even if you did your best to strive for perfection, he’ll still demand more and berate any of your flaws and imperfections.

As a young boy, Ruki enjoyed abusing other people until his mother left him behind. His mother’s abandonment made him develop trust issues toward women. The adults in the orphanage branded him like cattle, causing him to grow up and treat you like livestock. He found amusement in this because for one you’re human and two because Ruki is sadistic. He expects you to behave and speak in a certain way. Speaking up or rebelling against him will cause harsh punishments.

We all know Shu seems lazy and disinterested in everything, so if you’re looking for someone who’ll make an effort in a relationship, Shu is not the one. He struggles with PTSD and depression. It’s not expected, but Shu is an open pervert. Don’t sleep out in the open or wear clothing that’s slightly revealing if you don’t want Shu to grope you. He’s also a sadist. Shu will cut you just to taste your blood, to see if it tastes better when you’re scared.

In the Mukami family, Azusa is the character we all go for (that also says something). He can be clingy and sweet, but Azusa is also a sadist and a masochist, one to the extreme. He enjoys hurting himself and for others to hurt him too. Because of this, Azusa expects you to do the same. Azusa will show his knife collection and suggest cutting you to make you feel good. Even if you’re a sadist/masochist, Azusa takes things too far, it makes sense since he’s a vampire and you’re a human. But, if you don’t stop Azusa, you must eventually tend to a deep wound.

Shin looks down on everyone except his brother. You’re human, a creature always seen beneath him. Even after many years of being with Shin, he’ll always remind you of your place. Being a sadist, he seeks pleasure in your pain and suffering. As you’re on your knees, crying and begging him, many will feel sympathy, but not Shin who loves torturing you. With Shin, you’ve to be used to his pranks, they’re anything but harmless. He also loves to humiliate you, making you feel insecure and never enough; he thinks it’s funny when you look all hurt by his words.

In relationships, you must see each other as an equal and have respect. That’s not the case with Carla. In Carla’s eyes you are underneath him and will always be underneath even when he loves you or grows to care for you. Carla breaks any ties you have with anyone other than him. Sometimes it seems impossible not to go mad from all his torture and seeing your breakdown disgusts Carla. He enjoys torturing you because he’s sadistic and also enjoys humiliating you from your manners to your appearance.

Here’s the opposite story, though. With apologies because I don’t have the book in front of me, so I may get some details wrong, but I read this “Irena’s Children“ by Tilar J. Mazzeo.

Irena lived in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation, and dedicated her life to rescuing Jewish children from the Ghetto, and her story is complicated in a lot of ways but - well, this story isn’t actually about Irena, per se.

It’s about a bus driver.

It’s about a day when she’s traveling across town by bus with a very young Jewish child, and partway to their destination the child looks up and asks a question - in Yiddish. and the whole bus goes quiet, because everyone knows what that means. And Irena thinks, okay, we’re going to die here today.

And she’s running through her options - all of them bad - and suddenly the bus stops, and the bus driver announces that there’s been a mechanical failure and the bus needs to return to the depot immediately. Everyone off, please.

And she stands and goes to get off the bus and the driver says - not you two. Sit down. So she sits down as everyone else leaves, because, well, what else is she going to do? the options are all still bad, at this point.

and when the bus is empty the bus driver says,

“Where do you need to go?”

And then he drives them as close to their destination as he can, and lets them off, and drives away. And Irena lives, and the kid lives, and they never cross paths again.

So a janitor got three people killed, and a bus driver saved two lives - not to mention all the other lives indirectly saved because Irena was able to continue her work.

I think about that almost every day now, to be honest.

We can’t all be Irena. I couldn’t be Irena. She was in a unique place with very specific skills and connections that let her do what she did. I am just one mentally ill librarian. I can’t be her. But - I can be the bus driver. Or I could be the janitor. Because it doesn’t matter what your job is. It doesn’t matter who you are. In a world like this, every single one of us has the opportunity to do massive harm or massive good. We can save lives or end them.

And that’s scary. but it’s also very comforting? at least for me. Because at the end of the day it means this: no matter of how small and helpless and unimportant you feel, you’re never powerless in the face of great evil.

You can choose to be the bus driver.

oh. Oh, that’s amazing.

Because all those other bus passengers - the ones who got off - see right through the “mechanical problem” claim, as the bus drives off with Irena and the child. And some of them maybe see the bus come back later, without them. And they assume the driver hauled them away to the authorities, and nobody talks about any of it.

And some of them feel smug that Those People got caught, and some of them are horrified that Irena and a child were hauled away to who-knows-where.

None of them know she was taken to safety. None of them will ever find out. If any of them say anything to the bus driver, he’s going to respond with “I just did what I had to” and shut up after that.

And the important part is: You WILL NOT KNOW who is helping. Who is on what side. Who is secretly providing support to the needy; who is casually upholding the fascist regime.

You have to make your decisions and take action without that knowledge.

You can be the bus driver who everyone thinks turned an immigrant family over to ICE.

You can be the office worker who “accidentally” misplaced the requisition forms until after the deadline.

You can be the librarian who leaves the wifi on at night.

You can be the barista who sneaks someone on the run a cup of coffee and a day-old pastry.

You can be the student who knocks on a car window to wake up someone before the patrols get to this street.

You can be the hotel concierge who tells people the route to a bathroom that doesn’t pass the front desk. You can tell them which service elevator leaves through the garage instead of the lobby.

There’s no guarantee that people on the run for their lives will ever be directly in your path. But if they do show up, you can find a way to help them. Sometimes all you can do is give them a smile and a thumbs-up - and sometimes that’s exactly what they need: a message that the whole world is not against them.

Directly related to what you said there are signs in some libraries that say “The FBI has not been here” or some equivalent. They can’t warn you when they’re looking, but they can stop telling you they’re not, if they know. Sometimes it’s small stuff like that.

There are big and small ways to help, and if you keep your eyes and ears open you can find ways to help. At the end of the day the only person who knows everything you chose to do is you, but will you be able to face yourself?

Make sure you can. Help when you can.
