Look. Look. Look. LISTEN Iron Lung au that basically follows the Still Wakes the Deep plot where Simin works on the oil rig called the Iron Lung as an ex convict who’s life takes a turn after the rig discovers something deep in the ocean that has begun infecting and mutating the workers.

It all ends the same, this is something much bigger than Simon, he has to put an end to the thing that have taken over his coworkers and companions which basically look like the Eel. There can even be a moment like in the DLC where Simin gets fucking hunted by the thing (Rob) while diving.

Maybe Simon is a saturation diver and was able to survive for so long because he was stuck in the dive bell(?) before being pulled back up into the horrors that be? Or maybe he got a front row experience of the hallucinations while in the bell.

I dunno. This Au kind of just haunts me a bit. I needed to get it out there.

something that I feel like is missing from fandom nowadays is the idea that you dont have to have a unified, chronologically/tonally consistent interpretation of your favorite work. your fics dont have to fit within the same version of canon, even if theyre all canon-compliant on their own. your headcanons can contradict each other. be a multishipper. write metas that take two totally different interpretations of the same plot point. write a character as a villain and then write them as the hero next time. write a character as a lesbian and then write them as straight next time! engage in hypotheticals and drop them when you get bored! make up the rules as you go!! have fun with it!!!

This is your daily "Pardal loses hir shit over Iron Lung" hour, because I realized this could also be a grease pencil.

Before we get into it, yes I can see that light sparkle on the grain, this is DEFINITELY a charcoal stick. it's not up for much debate, the materials don't lie. BUT! Walk with me for a bit, if you will.

If you didn't know, grease pencils have had many names over the years and were way more prevalent than they are now. They are, as the name implies, made of a greasy material (opaque wax), which allows for it to leave marks on surfaces that would not adhere charcoal or lead pencils. They are basically grown-up crayons.

These babies were most used by cartogaphers and technical artists, because you can draw on top of all sorts of things. Regular paper, yes, but also laminates, glass, plastic, lacquer and, msot relevant, glossy paper.

You can draw over X-ray sheets, official maps of all sorts, charts, analog tape, even glazed ceramics. Which makes them incredibly helpful for aircraft control, diplomatic and military meetings and work, technical artists, the works! Remember those scenes in Stargate and Star Wars, with mission controls playing around with panes of glass and styluses? It's inspired by the systems used to trasncribe and share aeronautic coordinates and movements in real life.

Back to Iron Lung, you can see where I'm going with this.

Again, these are definitely charcoal sticks, but consider for a moment why having them NOT be charcoal sticks but rather grease pencils might be a good call.

For one, they don't smudge easily like some high B grade charcoals, and on a similar note, they are not so easy to wash off. They can be, but given the in-movie map being a textile, chances are slim. It's a sure-fire way to retain whatever information was acquired by the sub driver, regardless if the thing was flooded with blood of not. Grease pencil won't go anywhere! And once you've retrieved the information, a good wash in soapy water will do the trick.

Now for the downsides: hard to say how easy to come by wax is out there after the Quiet Rapture. Definitely no beeswax or permaceti, for example, but maybe paraffin can be managed in a pinch. That said, is this the kind of resource you'd rather send into the depths of a blood ocean, or one to keep for your more specialized technitians to use in the space stations? I guess it depends on how important you think these dives are.

Regardless, both options (charcoal vs grease pencil) offer some interesting insights. Charcoal requires burned plant matter, where are they getting that? Or is it coal, and if so where are they mining it? For grease, how do they get the grease and where? How do they get the dye, do they scrape off soot from exhausts? Then again, what are they burning?

PLEASE BE ADVISED that it is set to disabled for blogs that have not made any replies but it will turn ON if you reply with that blog in the future.! i just tested it with my main, which was greyed out but it turned on the moment i left a test reply

so for some reason this feature was actually announced on the tumblr engineering blog. interesting choice not to reblog it to the staff or tumblr blog, esp considering they asked for user input on how to implement it, but i suppose considering the response to the last update maybe the replies would be too overwhelming...

so couple of clarifications. comments are disabled as default for primary blogs that have their likes disabled. they are seemingly enabled for all other blogs that have replied to posts

posts you comment on may show on your followers 'for you' page if you leave your replies publically available. they may, in the future, show in on your followers dashboard if your follower goes to their dash settings and enables this. apparently, if your likes are enabled, your followers can already see those on the dash if they've gone into preferences and selected to do so, which I was unaware of, and that seems to be disabled at default, but it's possible i disabled it previously and forgot about it ig

We see the first panel in color: Grace floating outside the Hail Mary, surrounded by the red glow of Astrophage, as Carl says, "And once you do that? Hoo, man. You'll be unstoppable."

Back to black and white, Grace smiles emotionally and says, "Thanks, Carl." Carl stands up to leave and points at his paper. "Remember, Stratt wants that report by end of day." Grace hunches again and scowls, "Thank you, Carl." End ID]

At the start of my employment, my boss showed me videos of people stealing, and we both had a chuckle about it. How silly they were! There was a camera overhead, and it’s not to watch the shoppers. See, we can’t actually stop shoplifters. They get away with it maybe nine out of ten times. But we, who are watched and tallied and witnessed? We are always caught.

At first it was hard to hold one hundred dollars bills. An amount I had never seen before. An amount that didn’t exist in my household. It’s normal now. Here is something that is not for me.

“What the hell, I’ll take another,” says the man, pondering our 200 dollar watches. What the hell. Total comes to 580 and not even a flinch in his face. I have been working for 11 hours today and made only 110 dollars. It will go to my rent. Today I work for free, it feels. When I get my check, I will have 35 dollars left for food and saving.

The six hundreds he hands me go into the cash register. For a moment, I imagine having money. Then I put it away, counting out his change.

I know for a fact we sell our products for double what they are worth. That I could be making commission. That they could hand me those 580 dollars and change my life and not even mark the difference in their checkbooks. He’s not the only sale they make today, but I am the reason they made it. He’s not the only one spending 600 dollars, but if I hadn’t spent two hours with him telling me about his life, he wouldn’t have spent any. I go home. I don’t own a watch.

I have watched and rewatched a video on how to make salmon four ways. My shopping list is always the same. Pasta. Rice. Tuna. If I can afford butter it was a good week. I dream of the world I will never walk in, where I can throw the best fish fillet in the cart with a shrug. I hold hundreds in my hand and look up at the camera. I put them under the cash drawer.

I go to work. I scrap together my savings. I eat my bowl of rice slowly. My manager takes a paid week off from work just for his birthday. He owns a yacht. 

I’m not worth the cost of a watch.

i wrote this while i was working at orlando’s walt disney world parks.

i was part of their college program. i moved to the state for it. they legally owned the building i was living in and still charged me rent. i ostensibly was being charged to work for them. it was a 2 bedroom apartment and they placed 6 adult women in it in forced triples.

as many as one in ten disney employees have experienced homelessness while working for the company. despite huge efforts to unionize, strike, or otherwise demand fair treatment; disney has refused to increase employee quality of life.

disney admits publicly that a good portion of their success is because the employees (“cast members”) are dedicated, passionate, and selfless. this is never reflected in pay. even “face” characters (ie those that are princesses etc) make barely above a minimum wage.

at the time that i worked there, i made $8.50 an hour. at one point i was asked to create a human shield around a bag because a bomb dog had alerted to it. for eight fucking dollars an hour.

i now work a very cushy office job. i have bought the salmon and cooked it all four ways.

i go to the store. i am nice to the person behind the counter. she looks up at the camera while she counts out my change. there is nothing fundamentally different about her and i.

we are both worth more than the watch, anyway.
