Vivian Maier
A Chicago nanny who left behind a large, secret hoard of her pictures wasn’t discovered until 2011. A box filled with Maier’s negatives was discovered at a local thrift auction house in Chicago. She’s being hailed as one of the best street US street photographers of the 20th century
Maier left behind more than 100,000 images, in hundreds of boxes of negatives and undeveloped rolls of film, as well as some Super 8 home movie footage, audio tapes and trunks full of memorabilia.
An American of French and Austro-Hungarian extraction, Vivian bounced between Europe and the United States before coming back to New York City in 1951. Having picked up photography just two years earlier, she would comb the streets of the Big Apple refining her artistic craft. By 1956 Vivian left the East Coast for Chicago, where she’d spend most of the rest of her life working as a caregiver.
Every now and than on Escape Kit I stumble upon not only amazing work but an amazing story behind it. This is one of them, Vivian Maier has absolutely stunning street photography and it might never seen the light of day if it wasn’t for chance.

Watch: Bob Ross once painted only in gray for a colorblind fan … and it was incredible.

Recycle your bottles by Eelco van Collenburg Via Flickr: Leica M4-P, Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm f2.5, Ilford Hp5 - Developed in Ilfosol 3 (11min@20C), hyperfocal - This is one of the scene's I remember really clear! I saw him kicking a bottle accros the street, and then he shouted something to his mom in french. This was my signal to aim my camera at him. Then he jumped. I can't remember if he even landed,... I just walked away re-checking my camera settings to see if I had it. For the next 5 minutes I must have drove my girlfriend mad talking about this shot. :-) So If you have seen any flat bottles in Avignon, it has probably been this kid. © Eelco van Collenburg All Rights Reserved

Emotion, Otherwise by Hayden Williams Via Flickr: Canon AE-1 FD 50mm f/1.8 Kodak Ektar 100 Double Exposure Hong Kong I thought I was trespassing into an abandoned shipyard, but it turned out to be a popular spot open to the public. These 5 local girls were taking pictures for their band. They kept asking me to take their picture, so we just ended up exploring the shipyard together. Their english was poor, and my cantonese is poorer, so conversation was difficult but entirely hilarious. Strangely enough, this shipyard is a popular place to bring puppies for frolicking. Even more strange is that all five of these girls were scared of puppies. How can you be scared of puppies? Crazy girls; we hung out for a long time.
