daydreaming - ii
summary: Tess tries to figure out what Rooster wants from her. It doesn't end well.
bradley bradshaw x tess mitchell
word count: 5k
warnings: swearing, fluff, angst (happy ending in pt 3 i promise), small age gap (about 5 years), daddy issues, best friends to lovers and it's very complicated.
a/n: once again, i was sure this was only going to be two parts and now it's three. so.... sorry?
i debated talking about Tess's mom in this fic and decided against it cause it doesn't add or take anything away from the story. i just imagine Carole took her under her wing after she found out and the two of them kept Bradley and Tess close so they would always have some sort of family around.
italics are flashbacks, regular text is about one year after the mission
part ii is brought to you by Coca-Cola, Shania Twain, and ABBA
masterlist || pt.I || pt.III
Tess’s feet pounded heavily on the sidewalk by the time she reached the Hard Deck. Penny’s house wasn’t far from her bar and Tess’s head had been a mess for nearly a week, spinning out of control since the second she laid eyes on Bradley. She cleaned her room, bathroom, kitchen, and Amelia’s room all before noon and still, there was no reprieve from the tsunami that her mind had become.
Months ago, she’d read in a blog post about connecting mental and physical health - its clever title Running From Your Brain: All the way you can connect your body and mind was what drew her in - that running was a great way to clear one’s mind, so, after digging through still unpacked boxes and every closet in Penny’s modest home, she laced up her dusty sneakers and headed out into the early California afternoon, hell-bent on calming the raging storm.
Moments after the initial high wore off and her lungs started fighting that burn from rough breaths, it seemed like it was going to work, like the Bradley shaped shadow that was following her around had finally subsided. It was only her, the sun, and the pavement beneath her cushioned toes. The pain of her breath washed away any other thought, because how could you think of anything else when your entire body was screaming at you to just stop. Tess always relished in this sort of feeling, she loved being able to feel the muscles in her body change and shape themselves anew, molding themselves into what was needed to complete the task.
AMAZING! I freaking love it and I can’t wait for more. I’m just a sucker for a Bradshaw x Mitchell!daughter pairing.
what am i up to? oh nothing, just watching top gun maverick and crying for the sixth time.
how can people enjoy shows without spending all of their freetime shitposting about them on tumblr and reading fanfiction of their ships until 3 am

Thank you! Especially for all the love I woke up with as I watched you go through all the chapters! I started writing that fanfic almost four years ago (maybe???)! Since then I have divorced from a very abusive husband and married a wonderful woman. I am actually feeling more like writing (especially with my recent OBCESSION with A Discovery Of Witches)! I am actually working on picking this back up soon. I will include you in the tags when I do!! Thank you again.
OKAY SO
I’m almost done reading A Discovery of Witches, having been introduced to the story and characters through the show and…
*hides from book purists* I… like the show better
I’m trash for political dramas and in the book I just wished I got to see more of the plot going on with the Congregation. All the factions with their own goals vying for power 👌 👌 👌 So gooooood!
In the show it’s about a 50/50 balance of Matthew and Diana perspective. I got a little tired of being nearly exclusively in Diana’s head by the end.
A little too much tell instead of show in the books. There’s a lot of scenes that are just people explaining things to Diana or Diana explaining things to people where as in the show they do less exposition and more action.
Again, not enough Matthew perspective.
AND SPEAKING OF MATTHEW: Don’t lynch me here, but… Book Matthew is a little problematic sometimes and I high key prefer show Matthew. Like, I get what Deborah Harkness was trying to do with paralleling vampires to wolves, but the possessiveness and domineering tendencies he has are things he active combats in the show, on account of the respect, admiration, and love he has for Diana. In the book, he tries to make excuses for them more often than not, and only combats them when Diana pushes him to. They just don’t have as healthy of a relationship in the books and that was a little upsetting since I started with the show and the way they were such peers to each other (a huge trope subversion for the genre) was part of what made me ship them so hard. That’s not to say it’s a bad relationship by any means! They’re still so good for each other in so many ways. I just prefer their relationship in the show because it feels like there’s a lot more respect there. Little things like Diana saying she’s going to go after Satu herself and Matthew agreeing to let her do that or just the way he seems to value her opinion a lot more in the show.
That’s not to say I don’t like the book! It’s a great read and I love how much more I understand the world and characters now, but… I think I’m going to stick to my plan to not read Book 2 until Season 2 of the show is out, because I’d rather experience the show version first.
I will say, I totally agree and love the plotting of the show more. Somethings in the book seemed to come out of the blue because there were things that Diana didn’t know, and because a majority of it came from her point of view, we didn’t know that information either. The biggest example I would think is Julliette: in the book she’s mentioned in one chapter briefly, totally forgotten, and then BAM is being sent to kill Diana. They way they weaved in her story and made her a fleshed our character was wonderful.
But at the same time, Matthews character development is a huge plot point throughout the series, and so his characterization in the first book is on purpose. His flaws are brought up, critiqued, and changed in the 2nd and 3rd books. His emotional development almsot mirrors Diana’s development of her powers. He does become a better character, and I’m interested what that’ll look like in the show since his flaws weren’t all that present in the shows
(I will also say, I think the books could use a bit of editing at some points, and the show was able to do that internally).
I absolutely agree with both of these! I have only finished the first book and halfway through the TV show with my wife. I finally paused and just word vomited about how the TV show just weaves the story better because of the narrator. I totally think that the books are a good mix of Outlander and Twilight. I said it!
Also ADOW-Matthew... eh. Too possessive with anger problems.

I mean the whole damn point of the Nativity story is that the supposed son of God (interpret Jesus how you fucking want, of course) was born to a couple of poor, exhausted peasants in the stable for the inn, and his first bed was a feeding trough for animals. That would nowadays be like a poor couple where the mother gives birth in a parking garage behind the motel because they couldn’t find a better place and nobody else would take them in. It’s a pretty gritty setting, and the idea is that God was reborn in some of the rock-bottom lowest circumstances. The only thing majestic was all the angels and shit, and of course motherly love
I get that a lot of the art portraying Madonna and Child as fabulously wealthy europeans in splendid robes and golden light was meant to glorify God + whichever nobility was sponsoring the artist, and while of course it’s genuinely beautiful art, it just always struck me as horribly missing the point, which is that the supposed son of God started in incredibly humble circumstances, among the kind of people that everyone else looks down on
‘Massacre des Innocents’ by Leon Cogniét, 1824. Although the Feast of the Holy Innocents is in a couple of days time, this painting is still really relevant in that it portrays Mary as how She really was: a scared refugee mum, so fearful that Her son was going to be one of the Innocents killed by King Herod.
My new favorite mordern interpretation is this work, José y Maria by Everett Patterson (http://www.everettpatterson.com)
I had to look at this like FIVE TIMES to register all the layers of symbolism going into the piece by Patterson.
The hoodie as a veil.
Weisman cigarettes
Each of them is haloed by an advertisement sticker.
No Vacancy sign on the motel.
Dove sticker over Maria’s head.
Neon sign with a star symbol also over Maria’s head.
The crown over the ‘Dave’s City Motel’ sign. “New Manger.”
The sign behind Jose’s elbow likely says ‘Herod.’
The wee little plant growing through the cracks at their feet.
It’s like a New Testament ‘I Spy.’ I love it!
Ugh.
New favorite interpretation of the nativity.
The paper at José’s feet has an advert for Shepard Watches Maria’s hoodie says Nazareth High School The sign above José’s head proclaims ‘Good News!’
This is incredible and lovely.
Dave’s City = City of David = Bethlehem (And with a crown emblem.)
The sign over Maria’s head has the “S” cut off, so it says “Ave” as in “Ave Maria”.
She’s sitting on a horse (which I’m guessing is symbolic of the donkey). The graffiti on the base of it says “Word” and “Flesh”.
The newspaper at Jose’s feet also has the words “glad” and “tide” below the shepherd part = the angels brought glad tidings to shepherds watching their flocks.
The side of the phone booth says “Zeke 34:15-16.” That part in the book of Ezekiel says, “ 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord.16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice. “
This painting is so cool.
Reblogging I’m sure but worth it
Modern re-telling of the Nativity is awesome. ❤️✝️
