“That’s what I keep saying! They are using the animals to make money. They shouldn’t even be doing that in the first place. But they won’t even keep the animals in a decent housing? It’s not much to ask!” Hugo rarely got angry but this was not something he could easily let go. “Oh no, I work at an animal shelter, my boss has offered to help with this. Get lawyers and all that when I need.” he smiled. “You are not Gaby?” he said blankly at the other’s words. “Then who are you? Sister? What? She doesn’t have a sister.”
“They don’t even run their business in a logical way, if that’s the case. They should be investing profits back into the business to encourage growth. Things like updating the housing for animals should be done to show professionalism.” The girl reached out to squeeze his shoulder in encouragement. “No, it isn’t too much to ask at all. It should be a basic requirement to having animals in your care.” It was clear that the boy was passionate about animals, something that was endearing to her. Watching out for those that couldn’t protect themselves. Especially in a world her father had described as being very dangerous and cruel. “Oh, that’s quite interesting. What kinds of animals do you have there? It might be nice to have a furry companion to come home to.” The boy seemed to struggle with the realization that she was not Gabrielle. “She does, but apparently was told that I died when we were born. I’m actually older than her by a few minutes. That’s kind of why I’m in London, to meet her.” And find her father and learn what happened to him. “I’m Annabelle,” She held her hand out to him. “Annabelle Selwyn, Gabrielle was given her step-father’s name. Or, our step father’s name, I guess. And you are?”
Being raised in a muggle city had shaped Annabelle in many ways growing up. She’d helped her father unload and unpack the boxes of books and other items that were sold at the shop by hand for most of her life. Not that she didn’t know about magic, but her father didn’t want any to draw any attention from the Wizarding authorities. When it came to moving her things from her 1978 Renault 5 to her new flat, she did carry a few fragile odds and ends by hand, but used her wand to move the rest. As she carried a box of keepsakes from her car, towards the front of the rental, Annabelle didn’t remember to step over the uneven spot on the sidewalk and proceeded to send things crashing to the ground. “Merde!” Her antique tea set shattered on the cement, the shards biting at her exposed ankles. She winced, crouching down to collect her things from among the broken pieces of ceramic. The girl could hear footsteps coming down the walk, but she didn’t look up. “Sorry, I’ll be out of the way in a moment. Careful where you step.”
Hugo almost jumped on seeing Gabrielle. he looked around nervously, to see if her brother or cousin was around, a little bit relieved to find they weren’t but he wasn’t entirely sure how to get away from her without seeming utterly rude. Perhaps it wouldn’t kill him, quite literally, to wait a few seconds for her to sign and move on. “Um – I did give them a few cost effective ideas, drew up a whole new plan for their shop with the help of an Extension charm – they just don’t seem to want to do the work. My boss is going to help me make a case against them if things don’t change soon, but I just want to change things without creating trouble, you know? I’ll try researching more, I did look at some studies, but those were all muggle participants, I didn’t know if that’ll be of any value.” He smiled and and handed her his clipboard. “Thanks, Gaby.”
Annabelle nodded sympathetically, “It’s a shame that they don’t care for their creatures enough to care properly for them without being convinced. That should be a clear sign that they shouldn’t be housing them.” Poor creatures. It was sweet that the boy was trying to help them. “Your boss? Are they in law, or the ministry? Maybe take a survey yourself, out here. It’d draw attention to the matter and put pressure on the business to change.” She’d seen something similar done with a business down the street from her father’s bookstore when she was home for the summer. Taking the clipboard, the brunette was about say something when he said her sister’s name. “You know Gabrielle?” She piqued at the knowledge. “I’m her sister, Annabelle.” It was still such a foreign thing to say. And from what she could gather, no one knew about her anyway. “Are you a friend of hers? I’m actually looking for her. Do you know where she frequents?”
“People need to learn to tip better.” Sirius grumbled as he counted the money his previous customer had left him. “How may I help you.” he said to the unsuspecting person who was walking towards him, letting his bad mood reflect in his words even though the other had done nothing to piss him off – yet.
@unfinished-starters
(He’s a mechanic during the day and bartender at night so pick one!)
“With customer service like that I’m surprised they’d leave you a tip at all.” Annabelle retorted as she approached the mechanic, keys in hand. “I’ve just traveled almost 700 Kilometers with my Renault 5 and want to have her fluid’s checked.” The brunette pushed the keys across the counter towards him, raising her eyebrows. “Maybe if you do it with smile, there’ll be a few pretty coins in it for you.”
Hugo looked rather upset as he walked out of Magical Menagerie after yet another talk with the owner, and into the crowded streets of Diagon Alley. “Hello, good morning! Would you sign this petition?” Hugo asked hopefully to the first person who he came across. “I have been trying to get the store owners to make the store environment nicer for the animals in there, you know – make the place more spacious and livable. They just never listen. Someone has to do something!”
Annabelle was making her way through the unfamiliar alley, hoping to find an apothecary to pick up a few potions that she liked to keep on hand. The wizard at the Inn had given her directions to one, but nearly twenty minutes later she was still not there. Maybe the man’s annoyance should have hinted in the fact that he’d give her nonsense instead of help. That’s when the brown haired wizard asked her to sign a petition. The girl looked up at him in confusion, then to the shop. “A petition will only go so far, though, I’d be happy to sign.” She observed, reaching into her purse for a pen to sign with. “They’d be more receptive if you gave them cost effective ideas for how to save money while treating the animals better. Possibly studies to show witches and wizards would be willing to pay more for animals that come from a healthier environment and are therefore healthier and less likely to have costly aliments.”
He hadn’t expected Gabrielle to come visit him at work that day but then it was not uncommon for his sister to visit whenever she felt like it. And as much as he allowed it without a complaint, it was sometimes rather hard to alter his schedule to suit her sudden visits. It did not take long to ask another healer to cover for him with one of his patients however, before he made his way downstairs to see her. Something didn’t add up when his eyes fell on Gabrielle. He didn’t know what it was – he couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Was it her attire? It seemed different. Her body certainly wasn’t as thin as usual either. Had she used a spell to gain some weight? Because he had seen his sister only a couple of days ago and there was little chance for her body to change this much without magic. Brows furrowed as he walked towards the other, worry evident on his features. “Brie, what’s wrong?” he asked the other without dragging it out, because if he was sure about one thing, it was that something just didn’t seem right.
Annabelle looked around her as the man addressed someone named Brie. She expected a patient to be hiding beside her. But there was no one there. Brie. Anna had had a classmate in school that was named Gabriella, but her parents had called her Briella. Could her sister’s familiars call her Brie? Would he have her confused with her sister? Did they look alike? “Are you Stefan?” She asked cautiously. “I’m Annabelle, I’m a new trainee here.” The brunette was confused and unsure about what to ask. “I think you might have me confused with my sister, Gabrielle Selwyn? Is-is she a patient here? Did something happen to her?” There was genuine fear in her voice as her stomach sank uncomfortably, twisting and knotting. Had their uncle gone after her? From what Annabelle had been told, her uncle had been happy that their mother had Gabby. That she was being raised in ‘proper’ society. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Gabrielle when she’d been so close to meeting her. Anna had spent her whole life wondering about her twin. Wondering if she’d tried to write Annabelle. Her father had forbid her to write, lest she want to put Gabrielle’s life in danger. Gabrielle had almost been like an imaginary friend, always a part of her, but never really there. “Is she alright?” Did he hurt her too?
It’d been three days since Annabelle Selwyn had arrived in London. The first day she’d spent filling out paperwork for her flat and unpacking what items she’d been able to salvage from her and her father’s flat. The next day had been spent at St. Mungo’s in a clerical office, finishing up the last of the papers she’d needed to officially transfer her training to England and trying to find a good take away spot for food. On the third day, however, she made her way to the ministry and to the office of the Aurors. She’d met Alastor her last year at school, just briefly. He’d been there on business that she wasn’t privy to and she took an interest in him. Being in his presence had been fun for her, like a child getting their first taste of freedom. His intelligence clear in his words and their repartee was enjoyable.
That wasn’t why she had sought him out before even going to look for her sister. It was her father. He’d been missing a while now and the authorities in Luxembourg had given up after they’d detained her for suspicion of murdering him. They couldn’t prove anything, however, as his body was not found and she had been the one to report him missing. There was no evidence that she’d taken him, only circumstantial things, like the fact that she had access to their apartment and that they’d had a spat. Thankfully, after nearly two weeks, the owner of the place she’d stayed had come back from her business trip and verified that Annabelle had been there. It seemed like her life had been on hold since his disappearance.
Delicate knuckles knocked on the door frame, it’s mate sporting a plaque that read the Alastor’s name. He was her only real hope now. She hoped he wouldn’t think she was lying like the last set of aurors had. Not bothering to wait for an invitation, she peaked inside. “Alastor Moody?” She called out softly. “I apologize for dropping in unannounced, I just wasn’t sure who else to go to.” Her voice was quiet and she waiting for a response, her heart pounding in her chest. “It’s Annabelle. Annabelle Selwyn. From Beauxbatons?” There was a nagging doubt that he wouldn’t remember her. However, when she went to step back from the door frame, the green eyed girl collided with something solid behind her. Someone solid. She turned around quickly, hand reaching instinctively for her wand, but when she saw the familiar face she dropped it, giving the man an amused look. “You nearly gave me a fright, Alastor.”
Annabelle’s first day at her new healer training job in England was definitely going as well as a Monday could go. She’d gone to the receptionist’s desk to ask where she could change into her uniform and the woman had asked her the strangest of questions, “Did you bring my napoleons?” The intake witch hadn’t been much better, engulfing her in a hug and complimenting her ‘new outfit’. The teen was beginning to suspect that lot of them had drank some spiked tea that morning. She made a mental note to avoid the cafeteria. “I’m sorry, I didn’t?” Annabelle replied in confusion. “It’s quite alright, deary. I’ll call Stefan down to come fetch you.” Maybe the woman had only been joking with her about the napoleons. Some running gag with one of the healers. The Stefan character that she’d paged. The brunette waited patiently a few feet from the desk, not wanting to interact anymore with the chatty woman. Only a few moments ticked by before a wizard made his way towards her and she straightened. He was rather handsome and she smiled her greeting, not certain if he was Stefan or not.
I saw ANNABELLE SELWYN in Diagon Alley, but at first I mistook PRONOUN for DANIELLE CAMPBELL. The 19 Year-Old went to BEAUXBATONS ACADEMY OF MAGIC, right? Now I think they are a HEALER IN TRAINING. When it comes to the war the PUREBLOOD is NEUTRAL/SIDES WITH THE ORDER. I always liked that they were CURIOUS and INTUITIVE, but they always seemed WARY and OBSTINATE, which is unfortunate.
Bio:
Annabelle did not enter the world alone as so many do. She entered only moments before her identical twin sister, Gabrielle. The two were ripped apart not long after. Not many knew that their mother had been pregnant with twins, so when their father disappeared with Annabelle, there was not a big fuss over it, outside of the family. Most kept quiet about it to protect the Gabrielle, because despite her father deserting them, the child was still a pureblood, as was her mother, and the girl’s paternal uncle was a follower of the dark lord. No shame would come to anyone but the blood traitor, who was promptly disinherited and banished from the family.
Annabelle’s father had his reasons for leaving. He’d always been soft, not convinced of the purist agenda, but he played along to appease his family. It wasn’t until he took a muggle lover, during his marriage, that the world began to change for him. His wife became pregnant right as he plotted his escape from the Wizarding World. Unfortunately for Archibald, his brother discovered his affair and killed the muggle man that he’d fallen for. The only thing the man waited for before leaving was the birth of his children. He wanted to take both, but the most the lawyer could get was one child in the divorce. At least he’d save her from the purist life. He’d try to come back for Gabrielle later.
The best laid plans fall apart, though. As soon as he left, with Annabelle only days old, he fled the country. His brother came after him. It took 3 years before he found a place in Luxembourg to settle down. A place that his brother didn’t track him to. He wasn’t sure if it was that his brother had finally grown tired of the chase, or if his protection charms had worked, but with a three year old and just enough money to start a new life, he bought a shop with an apartment above it. He was a lover of books and opened a bookshop in the city. A muggle bookshop. He raised his daughter to coexist with the muggles that he’d grown so fond of. Magic was still used in their home and shop when it was closed. A secret part of Annabelle’s life that she couldn’t share with others. Not that her father let her out of his sight long enough to do so.
Their life wasn’t unhappy, but Annabelle felt so caged. As she grew older, her father explained more and more of the situation, so she understood his worry, but she longed to be free to live her life. To attend school with other children. To walk to the park down the block, or visit the bakery on her own. It wasn’t until she was 11 and received her acceptance letter to Beauxbatons Academy that she finally got to taste what freedom was like. The girl flourished in school. Grew into herself and made friends that she could spend time with outside of her father’s watchful eyes. It was after her first year that she and her father started to have little spats. It had been years since her uncle had been after them, so why shouldn’t she be able to go to the ice cream shop with her muggle friends on her own? The two had spats like this over the years that followed. Sometimes, she’d sneak out, just in spite of him.
It wasn’t until her seventh year that things went array, though. One of her classmates had an encounter over Winter break with a man that took a strange interest in hearing about Annabelle. Nothing changed right away, but her father became panicked when she told him the news. After graduation, he was extremely strict about her leaving the shop with out him. The two had the biggest fight they’d ever had and Annabelle left. She was gone for two weeks before returning and when she did, the bookstore was closed and boarded up. The shop and apartment were torn apart and a struggle was clear to have happened. When she went to the authorities. The wizarding authorities didn’t have much to go on, since her father had left the magical world and was supposed to be in hiding. And there wasn’t anything the muggles could do. For a while, Annabelle, herself was a suspect in the disappearance. Then the case went cold. The girl couldn’t afford to keep the business afloat on her own while training to be a healer and she knew that if she stayed there, she could be putting herself in danger. So, Annabelle decided it was time to go back to the place that she was born. Meet her twin sister, her mother, and find her father. She didn’t realize that no one but her mother and paternal uncle knew she was still alive, as everyone else was told that she was a stillborn to protect her mother’s reputation, as well as her sisters.
