Verin had better things to do and yet she was loitering around here, back pressed against the wall, more than a few yards over and she’d let her bus go by. She’s curious.
She was here when he started pulling wires, and she had remained since, attention self-delegated to the world around them and her phone, she didn’t want to make her interests clear. Though she had no real interest in the mechanics of what he was doing, she just wanted to see the end result. She’d call it subtlety, glancing out the corner of her eye every now and then to check on his progress.
When he spoke, she offered a shrug in initial acknowledgement, opting to slide her phone back in her pocket in exchange for her juul.
“If he hasn’t come out yet, why do you think he’ll come out now?” In other words, yes.
he gives a wire a particularly hard yank, smile slick beneath his mask as it gives with a pop. for a moment he ignores her, examining the wire with exclamation points still flashing across the led screen, callused fingers twisting the black-rubber encased wire around his fingers before giving it another hard yank.
“mr. doughnut and coffee is a little slow on the upkeep. pretty sure he’s in the shitter right now. but he could cut his coffee crap short.” security cameras rarely had alarms on them, even with how quickly they went missing when he was around, but he was never quite sure on the security officer’s reaction time, it appeared to vary from day to day, although wrench is pretty sure that was because of his constant pestering and breaking of things.
“they call me wrench.” he says by way of introduction, tipping his head to examine her just once before returning to his task at hand. which, at this point, is just savagely ripping the camera off it’s mount and unceremoniously dropping it onto the ground.
sol:
LIGHT, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO HEAR HIS VOICE. so good to hear his sounds of humour, short - lived as they may be. it feels so good to feel his light against hers, sparking like it does when she seeks him out. the sight builds an ache in her chest, makes her feel so terribly cold and empty. sol feels starved of love, of shiro’s love. of his touch on her skin, of his light twined with hers. the nights have been so terribly long and lonely without him. so unbearably dark and cold.
sol misses shiro. she misses his hands holding hers for the hundred little excuses he found and she gave him, and then just because it became normal to, and just because he could. she misses waking to the weight of his regard in the dead of night, tangible as the sheets draped over their forms after their couplings. misses the weight of his arm around her waist. misses kissing him until she falls asleep again. sol misses his touch and voice, the playful banter they share and the heavier talks that see her curled against his side, face buried in his chest. she misses his presence in a fight, the security that comes with knowing she will be caught if ever she falls.
most of all, sol misses feeling loved by shiro. she misses showing him her love in all those little ways.
“ liar. ” a statement, not an accusation, and one said with the same long - suffering fondness he wears when he gives into her demands. but she bites. does not poke holes in his claim. does not point out how his armour bears more than a week's worth of dirt. does not remind that even if he had forgotten, his ghost would easily remember. but she does pause at his question, visibly wavering between honesty and deflection. gaze drops, almost ashamed … but it’s been so long since she’s had the slightest comfort. so long since she was able to just breathe, to just be. a hurricane of what ifs whirls across her mind, throwing thoughts asunder. what if he doesn’t want her, what if he’d be better alone, what if — “ i missed you. ”
the words are out of her mouth before she can stop them, voice cracking and tears stinging her eyes. she blinks them away. tries to push past the sudden, fierce pang of longing in her chest. how her heart screams for shiro’s touch, shiro’s light, shiro’s love, shiro.
“ wanted to come earlier, but the prison’s kept me busy. i thought of you every day, down there. ” a nervous pause, then she steps closer into his space. hand rises to cup his cheek — slowly, so he can catch her, move away, if he doesn’t desire her touch. eyes are bright, glistening, and she meets shiro’s gaze, unwavering honesty and sheer longing that surpasses words. “ i missed you so much. ”
i missed you... i thought of you every day... i missed you so much...
the words cleave open that part of him that he’s been trying to let scab, rip off the band-aid of disconnection he’s been trying to tape onto it. leaves him feeling open and exposed, a raw nerve to an onslaught of flashes of emotion he’s been trying to bury for what feels like forever now.
the anger he’s been holding for months now, on behalf of dead friends, is nothing compared to the sadness he’d been feeling over the loss of sol at his side. and a part of him knows that this is what love is. love isn’t always happiness and sunshine and sex better than any hunt he’s ever participated in. sometimes love is melancholy over loss and being alone. sometimes love is just as depressing as it is uplifting, and he’s had too much time to himself to be thinking about this if the way he hesitates suddenly says anything.
i missed you too. he wants to say the words, but they’re stuck somewhere in his vocal box, buried beneath raw emotion that he was still trying to figure out how to vocalize. i missed you so much, and i love you so much, and i don’t think i can keep going like this without you.
it’s too heavy. all of that is too heavy. their relationship is not new, not by any means compared to a normal human coupling, but it feels young to them, to him. in the world of guardians and exos, beings that can live for centuries, it still feels too new to be putting that much weight in. young and fragile, though he knows it’s not either of those things.
he huffs a breath he doesn’t need, gloved digits coming up to delicately wrap around her wrist as he turns his head to press the metal plates of his face into her palm. i missed you, the touch seems to say, i missed you more than i missed my light when the traveler went out. i missed you more than i’ve ever missed my team, and if i ever spoke those words out loud, i’d hate myself.
he slides his fingers up to curl around hers as he lifts his head, twisting metal plates into something warm and friendly, warm and loving. “i’m glad you snuck away... although i hope petra will not have your hide for it... or the commander, if he finds out you were here.”
“I’m Shiro-4.”
My take on Shiro-4 meeting Misraaks to team up against the resurfacing dangers of SIVA.
i’m not sure what i like more: the fallen having a bifurcated penis like koalas or two penises but only one that works like earwigs and it’s killing me.
shipping with me is a guarantee that i’ll write a novel instead of a medium length reply as i originally planned and that’s fax, no printer.
sol :
THERE ARE PLACES ON EARTH THAT THE WAR HASN’T TOUCHED. places like the cosmodrome, quiet and peaceful, haunted though they are. ( she’d stopped by a rusted truck, the coffin to a family, and spoke to old ghosts. they whispered words like peace and sleep and home, and sol envies them ; envies that they can choose to rest, disappear from the world, and no one will hurt for it. ) this world has made a killer of her and peace is a comfort found only among the dead, and those soon to be. ( he’s the only one left, the last of the old guard, and those have made habit of dying, lately. )
sol stops, closes her eyes. takes a deep breath and listens to the whispers of the dead on the wind. ( all things must die one day. it’s an unchangeable truth. but not him. not today. this, she’ll remind herself every day until death comes for the last time. ) she keeps walking.
it’s easy to pick shiro out when she gets close enough. blip of blue on her radar aside, he sticks out like a bright yellow canary, so out of place amongst the snow. ( she sticks out too, but where he’s dressed like summer, she wears vengeance and grief, an old - young ghost walking among the dead, never to join them. ) we wear each other’s colours, she thinks. he wears her name and she wears his grief, black and vermilion, sleek and sharp edged. not that the colours they wear aren’t their own, but sol can’t help thinking there’s a joke to be made about this — not that she’s got a got what it could be. ( that was cayde’s speciality — humour wielded skilfully as a blade / canon. )
helmet vanishes in the light of a transmat as she approaches and she squints at the sudden brightness. the memory of cayde is heavy on her back, but memory of someone she loves isn’t why she’s here.
“ been doing that lots, lately. he’s pissing me off. ” warmth meets warmth in voice and light as the void that’s carried her since the prison fades beneath her skin and solar steps forth, brushing against shiro’s light and curling ‘round him in a sort of loose embrace. an i missed you is stuck in her throat like a bone. for a moment, she drinks in the sight of him — keen blue gaze and yellow plating. tries to ignore the pang in her chest / growing hole in her heart shaped like him since he left. gaze drops to his hand, returns to his. her fingers twitch at her side. “ you look tired, shiro. ”
a chuckle, brief and quiet, escapes him, for there are few that are not annoyed with zavala by this point, but fewer still that would vocalize it so brazenly. it’s understandable, zavala’s newfound concern and over-caution, over dangers on earth. the city had fallen, briefly as it was, under his command, and he bore that failure on his shoulders like a hunter would a cloak. but he was still too persistent in his cautions, almost overbearing, and the hunters, who were so used to their freedom, were suffering for it.
cayde would have intervened on their behalf, tried to convince the commander that they needed their scouts to roam, but he was gone. and that made the suffocation all the more real.
he breathes in quiet and deep at the feeling of light around him, her light and traveler above, he missed her so, and his light reacts accordingly, little sparks coming to life around him as the warmth comes. he would never admit it to another person, another guardian or ghost, but there had been a great emptiness growing in him with all that had passed, and her absence had only made him feel more disconnected from it all.
he had not gone to cayde’s funeral, just like he had not gone to andal’s before, a bitterness having grown in him again at the thought of burying another friend, someone he had had first, and lost again to the vanguard dare. and that bitterness had grown, grown into something dark and angry but also empty. he hadn’t wanted anyone to see it, least of all her. so he’d left, and let that hole in him formed by her absence grow, let it consume his better judgement.
but she had found him regardless. because he could never quite leave no trace of him behind, not when he knew she was seeking him out.
another breath and then he’s turning to face her fully, hand still on the pommel of his blade, a partial squint to his eyes that suggests amusement at the observation. could an exo look tired? could they look worn and down and depressed? he didn’t think so. they were not flesh and bone anymore, had not been for a long time, and expressions of any kind were no longer possible.
but he knows better than to argue, knows sol wouldn’t let the matter go, would stand and point out every plating of metal and carbon fiber and composite that didn’t look right, would point out the way his shoulders were held lopsided and uneven, and the way his cloak had more rips in it than it had last time they’d spoken.
he thanks the traveler that cayde-6 is no longer there to see him to concede to her observation, thanks the traveler that she was the only witness to his weaknesses. “i’ve been scouting out camps since... maybe a week ago?” he admits. “i’ve lost track of time.” it’s not a lie, but it is. at the time he’d lost track of days, but now thinking upon it, he knew how much time he’d spent scouting without rest, and it was for longer than a week.
“what are you doing out here, sol?” he asks, a quick change of subject he hopes she’ll bite.
i owe @mlotov a starter, which i will do tonight. also whatever replies i owe.

She had no life in her, every bit in her soul has fallen into silence and despair but she was still standing, like a tree, with her pride and dignity rooted beyond death and defeat.

@hypernovaed // s.c. [ req. shiro-4. ]
they hunt him a lot now, the guardians, the hunters. looking for something, anything to cling to of their beloved mentor. stories, relics, grandiose stories of the past. things to make them remember him, fond memories that were not their own but they cherished anyway. but he’s become selfish about it, ducking away and leaving camps seconds before they arrive, disappearing into the contaminated lands, the cosmodrome that’s been labelled off-limits since the red war.
he hides. because he has to. because he doesn’t want to share what he had. because cayde-6 had been his friend, his mentor, long before he’d belonged to the vanguard. and just like andal had before, he was lost because of that title, because of the mantle hunters were never supposed to take up.
the hunter vanguard position was a curse. and he’s only sorry he’d never noticed it before he lost his crew to it’s poison.
this aside, he knows he’s living on borrowed time. knows it the moment his ghost gives him a heads up of an attempted call, a warning that she was coming. it was inevitable that she would find him. because... because...
because she was his student, and she knew him like no other did.
sliding a knife into it’s place at his belt, he tips his head to the side, turning to look over his shoulder. watching sol with keen optics, and a particular tilt to his head that betrayed his surprise. surprise that she’d found him before he’d realized there was a breach in his camp boundaries.
she was good. light, he’d trained her too well.
“sol.” his voice is warm despite his surprise, carrying over the unnatural quiet of the cosmodrome, the snow that blanketed all sound but the crunch of her boots, and the fabric of her cloak rustling. “you know you’re disobeying zavala’s orders.”
@bellecosebabe // s.c. [ req. wrench. ]
a lot of things could be said about wrench when he’s alone, but that he is a contained man is not one of them. if there’s a way to be getting in trouble, a way to be fucking something up or otherwise just be a nuisance, he’s finding it. if there’s a way to be destructive, accidental or purposefully, he’s finding it. if there’s a way to be the wrench in the works that is society, he’s doing it.
he’s unafraid, destructive, and unhinged.
he’s also in them middle of trying to rip a surveillance camera off the side of a store for no real reason other than the fact that it’s just there, and he doesn’t want it to be.
“hey, uhhhh,” he’s got a handful of wires in one hand, and a pocket knife in the other. his mask is lighting up exclamation points. “hey, uh, lady. do me a favor and tell me when you see the store manager come running this way?”

the blood is slick on his fingertips, fresh and wet enough that it makes a sickening noise as he intertwines his fingers together, as he presses his thumbs to his forehead in a poor attempt to fight the migraine he could feel rising. the blood is not his, it never is, and in fact belongs to that of the man before him. dead from refusal of confession, dead dead dead. another lost to his sins, another he could not save.
he wants to be upset at this point, but even with his building migraine he can’t be.
his smile is dangerous, wide and boyish as he hears her enter the room, as he looks up at her with dancing blue eyes, not standing from his seat, but welcoming her into the room regardless. his dungeon, his confessional.
“vivienne.” he breathes out her name with pride. “what brings you to my bunker? news, perhaps?” there’s some strain to his smile suddenly. “a found deputy?”
But not all men seek rest and peace; some are born with the spirit of the storm in their blood…
