what people don’t understand about how adhd is disabling is that it’s not just getting temporarily distracted from, like, school work or hobbies. it’s getting distracted/being unable to motivate yourself to go to the doctor, eat regularly, do hygiene tasks, etc. it’s not knowing when or how long it will take you to do something, ANYTHING, and in many cases that thing is taking a shower or keeping your house from turning into a biohazard. it’s about being fundamentally incapable of controlling your attention and focus on anything, even and especially things you need to do to survive.
goose and her mission to kiss every victoire player
LMAO
Bro same thing with working as a caseworker.
You'll have a single mother of three who's fleeing a DV relationship. She has no recent work history because her ex kept her barefoot and pregnant. She's struggling with depression+PTSD while trying to find work in a horrific job market.
Now I have to be the one to tell her "Dept of Social Services insists every child over the age of 5 have their own bedroom, so you'll have to get a 4 bedroom, which will likely cost $5000/mo. You will get a housing voucher that covers 50% of the cost, so $2500/mo. You will need to make $90k/yr to comfortably afford this"
You and her both know a full-time minimum wage job comes out to $32k/yr in your area and most of that is going to go towards child care so she can work a job that will never pay enough to cover her living expenses. Even if she worked two full-time jobs, she'd still be ~$30k/yr short of the required income.
She can do everything right, she can work her ass off, she can get benefits, and it still won't make a difference. Her abusive ex is going to get the kids in the divorce simply because he has a steady income and home.
You see, in that moment, the woman start to consider going back to a guy who'll probably kill her and/or the kids someday and there's really fuck all you can do. Like " uhh I can help you apply for SNAP, you'll probably get $200/mo. Sorry for all the systemic issues"
‘While bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and “they’ll know where the hook is inside that fish,” Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. “They can ‘see’ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.”
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outside—but on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Gol’din has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlers—showy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but that’s unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.’
-Ed Yong, An Immense World
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.
I heard it was that time of year again.
say what you will about the 90s but there were so so many women on TV with beautiful curly hair. we used to be a proper society
Not only did mama raise a quitter, but she also raised a procrastinator, people-pleaser, doormat, coward, and liar, and you can’t put a price on that
Well when the NHL started they also had to work other jobs/didn’t get paid much!
Well this mens minor hockey league gets paid like less or the same!
Uh actually, everyone had to go through labor battles to get there, so like if you wait long enough.
A.) Anyone who is doing full time work should be paid at absolute minimum, a livable wage for the area they live in. If your minor men’s hockey league is being taken advantage of you should start to advocate for them to be paid more. Unless you don’t actually care and this is just a convient reason for you to check out of the conversation.
B.) You might have started to pay attention to women’s hockey five minutes ago, but women’s hockey has existed since before they were officially allowed to play. Which yes, allowed to play. White men have never had to fight for their right to play for fun, much less in a professional capacity. Marginalized men are still fighting tooth and nail for their place in hockey, and deserve the recognition and opportunity that has been denied them. And this implication that women have to wait and earn their access to professional space and a living wage is asinine. No one should have had to fight in the first place, but they have fought more to end up with less already.
C.) I make $16 an hour 40 hours a week in the country side in the Midwest. Not a major city. I’m extremely lucky I have a good relationship with my family and that they are still willing to support me by paying for food and letting me live rent free all year round. And even in this situation I could not afford to move out and there are still other bills to pay. Not to mention student loan debt. Which I imagine not a small number of professional players have. I can’t imagine all of them got full rides at college for hockey. This is not enough money for the players to pay bills and invest in their future even if food and shelter is immedialty taken care of.
