Everyoneâs cheering about Davey and Les being Jewish and stuff. And thatâs awesome!
But..
Theyâre also shipping David with newsies (ex: javid, dot, ravey, dutchie etc.). Accoring to the Torah, homosexuality is wrong in the Jewish community.
My point is itâs not ok to take something about someone and ignore the baggage that comes with it just to help yourself and/or your ship.
(Iâm not coming at anyone rn. Please donât take this in a bad way and come @ me. Just trying to understand things.)

2) why canât someone be gay and jewish exactly? Sure u mentioned that the Torah says homosexuality is wrong, but so does the Bible. Do u think Christians canât be gay either, or is do u only think this for other religions besides ur own? Quite frankly, this whole post comes off as hugely antisemitic and homophobic. I know u said in the replies that u donât feel like it is, but guess what? Just bc u donât feel like something u said is harmful doesnât make it ok. Thinking that making a post about how itâs bad to write jewish characters as gay IS antisemitic and homophobic, regardless of whether or not u feel like it was. Think before u post next time, mayhaps?

Wow, this is a pretty offensive post!
First, if youâre still âtrying to understand thingsâ you really shouldnât make a post like this, and phrase it as facts. People who are happy that Davey is Jewish are allowed to ship him with other newsies, but the implication of this post seems beyond shipping. Gay people existed in the 1890s, and so did gay Jews. If Davey were gay that wouldnât make him not Jewish anymore, and his religion doesnât automatically make him straight. Iâm gay and a practicing Jew. The two arenât mutually exclusive.
Pointing out specifically his being Jewish (and he is jewish, canonically) as an obstacle for shipping is kind of shitty too. The same reasoning would stand if he were Christian or Catholic (which itâs highly likely that most of the other newsies are); all Abrahamic religions are traditionally against homosexuality.Â
Religious and non-religious newsies would be persecuted for being gay in Canon-Era, not just David. It was the 19th century. But, assuming youâre talking about Modern!AUs, you can still make David gay. Gay Jewish men have been accepted by Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism, and though thereâs still a lot of debate, Orthodox Judaism generally doesnât care much about your sexuality.
Basically, people donât have to write David as an atheist to ship him with boys. I donât know how to tell you that gay people can still practice their religion. Saying itâs not okay to ship him, alone, with other newsies because, what, heâd be stigmatized? Because Jewish people canât be gay? Your post comes across as very ignorant and talks down to Jewish Newsies fans, especially gay Jewish fans. Please think before posting next time.

this also ignores the internal conflict that comes from being lgbt & religious which can be a beautiful plot point. it took me three years to come to terms with the fact that i am very very bi and still very very catholic. theyâre not mutually exclusive. i canât come out to my friends or my family because of the rules of the church. i am so scared that i will come out to someone that i shouldnât. you can hc davey as straight if you want - but not because you also hc him as jewish. do not raise those who use religion as an excuse to be homophobic.

@inamostauspiciousmanner why are people so selective about historical accuracy lmao? and only bring it up to make the argument that Ummm No POC would have existed in the 1800s so thereâs no point even trying to have more diverse casting in the year 2018!!! if you genuinely cared about historical accuracy youâd talk about the historical demographics of newsies at the time that indicate there were a lot of female newsies + that a large percentage of them would have been jewish given the racial make-up of new york but surprise nobody talks about that ! i wonder why ! itâs always âprotect our innocent white baby uwu how DARE u have a black characterâ lol and there IS a lack of characters that are poc hello? thereâs like 30 generic identical white men and like⊠a literal handful of poc in any production so idk which productions youâve been hearing about but iâd love to see them :)Â
