A Decade of Art
The turn of the decade is a nice opportunity to look back. I’ve been drawing for most of my life, but there were some big changes and improvements in the past 10 years. I was really proud of all of these artworks and they are a good representation of my skill at the time. 2010 I was just starting out with digital art. The lines were drawn on paper and then scanned in. I colored it in Photoshop using a mouse and the blur tool. I spent most of my time playing Ragnarok Online and drawing fan art for it. 2011 I recreated the scanned-in lines with the selection tool which resulted in this special, angular style. 2012 Still using a mouse but I began drawing from reference. I also started studying Game Art and learned how to make digital 3D models. 2013 I finally got a graphics tablet! You can see how much I struggled getting used to the tablet – look at these shaky lines! But the artwork is still one of my most popular ones on DeviantArt which I joined that year. Reading lots of tutorials and getting some feedback from fellow artists definitely helped! Also I stopped playing RO and started focusing more on my art instead. 2014 I discovered Paint Tool SAI and it’s vector lines. So I was back at “mouse-made” lineart. While it looked clean, it was also pretty lifeless. I also gave backgrounds a more serious try and the shading got softer. 2015 Even though this artwork is pretty experimental, bold colors and thick lines became a thing. I was working on a big University art project for most of the year. 2016 The most remarkable thing about this year was my return to free-hand lineart in Photoshop and the combination of cel shading & soft shading. Tried to give my art some more emotion. I also made some more graphic design and animation. 2017 It was a very difficult year with little art. My tribute to Linkin Park came from the heart and is still one of my most important works. 2018 Still a pretty inactive year. Painted a couple of traditional artworks for the first time in years. But I also redrew one of my earliest full digital ones. Yes, this is the same blonde girl as the one from 2010! It was nice seeing how far I’ve had come already. 2019 My inspiration returned! Tried out some artisan crafts, typography and realistic digital painting. But the biggest progress is visible in my “typical art”, adding more vivid lighting and more detailed backgrounds.
